PS4 breaks new milestone with 20 million units sold

PlayStation 4

The PlayStation 4 is continuing its accelerated sales pace, and now sits above 20 million units with competitors lagging behind.

The latest of the Sony consoles, the PS4 keeps its steady yet incredible selling pace and has broken a new milestone after selling over 20 million units, as of March 1 – some 2 millions since the last report in January. Concretely, the PS4 has sold 20.2 millions, and the place does not seem to be slowing down. The announcement came amidst the Game Developers Conference, where Sony showed some of the virtual reality add-ons the console will receive this year.

The PS4 launched two years after Nintendo’s Wii U, and already sold twice as much, with the Xbox One being its closest competitor with some 10 millions since the last report, that don’t count the holiday sales. It seems that Sony’s bet of focusing on the PS4 is paying off by the end and its four pilars (gaming, pictures, music and devices) all see healthy and doing well.

May NPD: PS4 On Top In Hardware, Watch Dogs & Mario Kart 8 Lead The Software Charts

The PlayStation 4, Watch Dogs, and Mario Kart 8 beat out all the rest in this month’s NPD sales numbers.

The NPD Group has come out with their monthly report on the financial state of the video game business, and Sony’s PlayStation 4 – like it has for the previous five months – is at the top of hardware sales chart for May 2014. At last checked, the PS4 has sold 7 million units worldwide as of April according to Sony, a figure considerably more than what has been reported for both Microsoft’s Xbox One and Nintendo’s Wii U.

In general though, May was a successful hull for every gaming platform with overall hardware sales up 95 percent from May 2013 by $187 million. A good sum of those sales were predictably from the PS4 and the Xbox One, but even the Nintendo Wii U and the PlayStation Vita saw boosts in their year-over-year performances, likely thanks to new hardware bundles (the Mario Kart 8 & Borderlands 2 bundles) being released in the same month.

Meanwhile, software sales also had a nice uptick by ending a six month decline. Consumers bought $274 million’s worth of new games at retail in May, 57 percent up from the $175 million purchased last year. Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs and Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 were to two biggest sellers – both certainly helping to drive hardware sales on their respective consoles – followed by MLB 14: The Show, Wolfenstein, and Minecraft.

Here’s the full list of the top-selling software for May 2014:

1. Watch Dogs (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PlayStation 3, PC)
2. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
3. MLB 14: The Show (PS4, PS3, Vita)
4. Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
5. Minecraft (360, PS3)
6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, 3DS, Wii U)
7. NBA 2K14 (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
8. Titanfall (360, Xbox One, PC)
9. Kirby: Triple Deluxe (3DS)
10. Call of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC, Wii U)

Sony PS4 Has Sold Over 6 Million Units Worldwide

PS4 image 2

As support for the PlayStation 4 continues around the world, Sony have confirmed that their new next-gen console has sold 6 million units across the globe.

The fanwars will not be won on paper, or on Internet message boards, or, in the defacing of posters used to market a rival console. They won’t even be won by official statements by CEOs and marketing reps for the companies behind the consoles, or even in terms of specs stating which console is better at delivering HD graphics and multiplayer gaming to our homes. None of that will matter in the end, despite what critics have stated in wordy articles, for in the end the debate between the Xbox One and the PS4 won’t be a question of ‘which one is better?’ it will simply be a question of ‘which one is selling more?’ and right now, as Sony have announced, the PS4 is winning.

Announced by John Koller, the Vice President of Marketing at SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America), Sony’s next generation console has now sold over 6 million units across the globe, shooting through Sony’s previously estimated targets of selling 5 million units of the PS4 by the end of the current financial quarter (which ends in a few weeks). The sales are most likely bumped up by massive sales in Japan where it launched on February 22nd, with the console having sold over 300,000 units during two days on sales in Sony’s home country. While this is certainly impressive, the PS4 holds its own in the other 56 territories where the console has launched too, holding off strong competition from their closest rival, Microsoft’s aforementioned console, the Xbox One, due to brand loyalty in Europe and a much lower price.

As the Xbox One comes pre-packaged with the Kinect 2.0 camera, the price of the console significantly higher, seeing it retail for almost $100 more than the PS4, which has a been a huge deciding factor for consumers even in North America, where Xbox has long reigned supreme in terms of sales. But these sales in North America are somewhat equal, suggesting that Microsoft will have to do more to hold onto its crown. However, competition between the two next-gen consoles is good as it leads to more competitive (read: cheaper) prices for consumers as well as better exclusive games as the two companies attempt to outdo each other with software offerings, so as for future developments and what both Microsoft and Sony do to regain and retain their lead, respectively, we’ll keep you posted once we know more.
