Innovative solutions by a diverse group of designers from across the globe! For their 2013 competition, red dot award: design concept once again teams up with YD to bring for you the One Hour Free Registration Window that entitles you to a complete fee waiver for pre-judging entries. Details Inside.

The red dot is a recognized international seal for excellence in design innovation. Winning this recognition would provide credit; highlight your existence, widening your client base. This is the only award that evaluates the submitted entries purely on its design merit and not by who submitted the entries. We know this personally because YD’s publisher Takashi Yamada was a jury member for the 2012 competition.

Details:

  • On the 6th February 2013, between 8 to 9 am PST, Yanko Design will publish a link for the promo on our homepage
  • The link will take you to a registration form that you need to fill in
  • After you complete the form, you will receive an email with the promo code
  • The code can be used immediately, and will expire on 28 February, 23:59 Singapore time

Wrap Up: 2012 red dot award: design concept

It was a wise comment when someone pointed out that design competitions are a means to measure one’s creativity. They give us that edge that makes us stand apart from the rest of the herd. So does this mean we need to participate in any and every competition? No! Contrary, we need to be selective and choose ones that are capable of give us that cutting edge; something top-of-the-line like red dot.

We were at the 2012 red dot award: design concept winners presentation ceremony in Singapore and this is what we saw:

The evening kicked off with Ken Koo, President red dot Asia, welcome all the guests and winners. The impressive LED backdrop reinforced the red dot branding and the soon enough Dr. Prof. Peter Zec went onstage to address the crowd. The one thing that struck us about Peter’s welcome speech was his passionate commitment to empowering young designers gain their foothold in the industry. He rightly says, that when you are fighting for yourself, and looking for ways to get that edge, a red dot award acts as handy ammunition in your portfolio.

Quite a contrast from the somber proceedings of the red dot award: product design, the concept design ceremony is filled with spunk and antics by the winners on the ramp.

We saw precious poses, couples kissing, Gangnam Style dancing, traditional clothes and loads of sexy attitude! The walk up the ramp is getting creative by the year! Rumor has it that almost every year red dot has to turn down requests from romantic boys who want to pop the question to their girls while on the ramp! As Ken Koo puts it, it is everyone’s night so one smitten couple cannot steal the show! We agree.

Bombay Sapphire created a special red dot cocktail for the evening and designers were seen enjoying them! The night clearly belonged to the young guns! We wound up the party a little past midnight, bringing home heady memories of the ramp walk. However like Peter said in his speech, the evening equally belonged to those who dared to dream, come out of their comfort zone and participate in such a prestigious design competition. Yes, the non-winners were thanked for their contribution as well.

15 Amazing Best of Best red dot award: design concept winner 2012

It was a glittering night that had all the elements of a perfect evening. The trophies shone bright, the smiles were flashy and young designers sashayed the red carpet with the finesse of a celebrity. October 19th saw the unveiling of the winners of the coveted red dot award: design concept in Singapore. It was an honor to be a part of the celebrations and festivities and be in the company of such creative people. Here is a look at fifteen concepts from the Best of Best list, that took our fancy; including the top-award – the red dot luminary!

red dot award: luminary – Float Base Station by Huang Hsin Ya & Huang Pin Chen

Float Base Station is a temporary emergency communication station.

Add Up by Prof. Fan Cheng Kuei, Deng Pei Chih & Hsieh Tsai Ni

Add Up is a cash conversion system for a traveler that puts small change to good use.

AIRTUBE Earphone by Seok Jiwon, Lee Hyunjoo & Hwang Sunmi

Airtube Earphones are automatically activated by air pressure when they are placed in the ears. Similarly, the music is automatically switched off when they are removed.

AmoeBAND by Tsai Cheng-yu, Yi-Ting Chen, Chen Kuei-Yuan, Tay Pek-Khai, Hsu Hao-Ming, Lai Jen-Hao, Chung Kuo-Ting, Chen Ying-Shan, Ho Chia-Ying & Weng Yu-Ching

The amoeba is able to adjust its shape to suit its environment. In AmoeBAND, this quality was applied to the typical adhesive bandage to enhance its adaptability.

ZIPPER by Arman Emami

Zipper is a flying indoor camera nd recording device.

Pojagi Net by Cheon Jae-Wook, Choi Min-Young, Chae Chang-Yi, Tak Hyeong-Ryeol, Han Sang-Wook, Shin Jung-Chul & Ha Seung-Mok

Pojagi Net is a multipurpose dry-compression mosquito net that was designed to address the problem of malaria.

NEST by Yoon Jeho & Zhang Yifan

NEST is transforms from an air mattress to a boat via the manipulation of its internal hooks and ropes.

Rotaress Pouring Pot by Leong Suki & Huang Zhirong

With its rotating handles, Rotaress Pouring Pot offers a simple, low-tech, and very effective solution to the common problems associated with draining a cooking pot.

Sense by Amornthep Treekuna, Soranun Choochut, Kitikhun Chitaphanya, Dome Boonyanurak & Piyawadee Tungkaprasert

Sense is a unique bathroom tap that activates and sets the water temperature based on its detection of the user’s hands.

Kitchen Icicle by Park Ji Yeon & Jo Eun Hee

Kitchen Icicle is a set of magnetic-tipped cooking utensils that bring a touch of fun – and convenience – to one’s kitchen.

JARPET by Zhang Di, Zhao Tianji, Ma Yinghui & Cui Minghui

JARPET is a children’s device for visualizing pets through 3D projections. Kids can enjoy vivid interactions with it via multi-sensory technology.

TenXion 101 by Chuang Chen-Hua

TenXion glasses provide a simple, comfortable, and stable structure, and are made with light, ductile materials.

SAV+0 by Kwon YongMin, Kim MinJi & Hwang ShinHee

SAV+0 enables people who wear artificial legs to enjoy sports more easily thanks to its modular design and specialized detachable components.

Integrated Workstation by Matthew Plumstead

Taking only the most essential components of a workstation and adding a third component, the daybed, the Integrated Workstation provides maximum flexibility in a very modest footprint.

Dog Pack by Wen-Yo Lu

Dog Pack is breathable mesh backpack for dogs that accompany their owners on mountain hikes. It has two detachable bags and can be transformed into a raincoat.

Ready To Party In Singapore With red dot award: design concept!

You can define concept design as creative energies that think more efficiently. One of the benchmarks of this genre is the red dot award: design concept. By the time you read this, team YD will be Singapore bound to capture the events live, as they unfold. October 19th is when the winners will be unveiled for the 2012 edition. This year was special as YD’s publisher Takashi Yamada was one of the jury members. In Takashi’s own words, the whole experience was empowering! Join Yanko Design live on the red carpet as we catch the histrionics of young designers as they waltz up the ramp to claim their coveted prize. The party begins at 7:00 pm – Singapore time, so stay tuned to Facebook, Twitter and this page!

YD & red dot award: design concept Present the One Hour Free Registration Window

Yanko Design was invited to attend the 2011 red dot Product Design Gala in Germany and the awards ceremony for the design concept winners in Singapore and we witnessed the energy, the enthusiasm, the glory of winning, upfront. Seriously, a red dot is all it takes to catapult you to instant fame! The 2012 red dot award: design concept is now in its regular registration phase but you can get a complete fee waiver for pre-judging entries. Exciting!

We will give you all the details on the 19th of April 2012, between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. PST on how to enter this competition and get the fee waiver. For now all you need to do is decide on which category you want to enter. No immediate design submissions required. Just look out for the Free Registration window that will open up on the April 19th.

Yanko Design has a ringside view for the competition this year and we are super excited! Our publisher Takashi Yamada is one of the honourable jury members and will be a part of the judging process in Singapore.

Once again, don’t forget to tune in on 19th April 2012, between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. PST for the free registration.
