Folders Come To Newest Wii U Firmware Update

Nintendo’s latest firmware update for the Wii U brings folders to the console’s OS.

On Monday, Nintendo dropped the news of a new firmware update for the Nintendo Wii U (available to download now). The shining star for the update, version 5.2.0, is the inclusion of folders, which now allows Wii U owners to organize their home menus and arrange software icons.

The Nintendo 3DS has had the same “create folders” option since April 2012, which is notably later than it should have been implemented in the first place. But thankfully, especially for Wii U enthusiasts who have a mess of gaming content on their front page, the feature is finally here, and works exactly as it does on the 3DS.

Moving on to other 5.2.0 changes, the update also adds a Download Management icon to the Wii U menu; the Quick Start Menu now displays when the Wii U is turned on from the GamePad TV Remote; an Options icon has been added to Power Settings, which lets users to rearrange software from the Quick Start Menu, and the design and layout for the Home menu has been tweaked to be easier on the eyes.

Finally, of course, further improvements to overall system stability also come with this firmware update, so thanks, Nindy! For a more detailed list of what Wii U firmware update 5.2.0 entails, head on over to Nintendo’s support website and take a gander for yourselves.

Wii U Update Enables System Transfer & Wii Remote eShop Browsing

Wii U system transfer GamePad image

The latest update for Nintendo’s Wii U OS is now live, giving users the options of system transfers and eShop navigation with almost any Nintendo controller.

It might not be the perfect solution for the problem (and I’ll get to why in a sec), but the latest Wii U update (version 5.1.0 U) finally allow users to move their Wii U-related content, digital software and tied data, from one console to the other.

The “Wii U to Wii U System Transfer” works just as its 3DS System Transfer counterpart, in fact – and that’s exactly where the “might not be a perfect solution” problem therein lies. For the Wii U data transfer to work, both systems, the one you currently own and the new you’re about to pour your precious game data into, must be running at the same time.

Apparently, and keep with me here, the Wii U GamePads of both consoles are necessary in this whole process, with a special confirmation code needing to be sent wirelessly between the two systems by pointing each GamePad directly at each other. Sounds crazy, huh? Not to Nintendo, who thankfully provided an image of this exact operation (…uh, thanks?).

Without a proper way to allow its users to sign out of one’s Nintendo Network ID on one system and then log on to another to gain access to their associated data – like, say, everyone else who handles digital rights management – this will just be the strange hoops its customers will have to go through. But hey, it’s nice that Nintendo is acquiescing to at least this level, I suppose.

Lastly in this new system update, besides the much appreciated system stability fixes, the entirety of the eShop can now be browsed with almost any Nintendo controller on hand, be it Wii Remote, Wii U Pro Controller, or Classic Controller. Previously, only the Wii U GamePad could be used to gain access to Nintendo’s digital storefront.

Nintendo Wii U Update Introduces “Quick Start” Menu

Wii U Quick Start Menu image

The newest system update for the Wii U gets players into the game as fast as ever.

Speed, much like emphasis of Mario Kart 8, is the main thrust behind the latest system update for the Nintendo Wii U. Update version 5.00 features the rather convenient “quick start” menu that allows users to get right into their favorite games, minus the waiting time that comes with booting-up the Wii U’s operating system.

The “quick start” menu also keeps track of what recent games/apps you’ve used so that the whole process really shaves off the time between you and, say, getting back into Mario Kart 8 to work on shaving off your race track time (I know, I know, too much Mario Kart on the brain). Take a look at the quick start menu in action.

As a generation that’s accustomed to the instant-touch lifestyle that comes with our modern electronics, your iPads and such, this is a smart move on Nintendo behalf.

Of course, that’s not all Update 5.00 brings with it: automatic downloading and installing of future system updates, a new kind of notification system on the Wii U GamePad controller that alerts patrons of status updates even when the main console is turned off, and most importantly of all, those awesome system stability tweaks.

The latest Wii U update is available now, as is Mario Kart 8. But I’m sure you already know that through my heavy, probably unbearable name dropping of it (it’s well deserved though!).
