If you’re McGuyver, surviving involves finding a pack of gum, a paperclip and a match head. Most other people, however, would requires some semblance of tools, and the Tactical Credit Card AX is as cool as they come. It’s a flat piece of metal that can fit in a wallet, and yet can be attached to a piece of wood and turned into a makeshift axe. Stamped from 304, 12 gauge stainless steel, the item also features up to 21 separate functions, which makes it into a multi-tool as well. It may not be able to cut down a large tree, but it’ll make the task of collecting twigs for an impromptu fire a little easier. It’s $30.

Is That A Klax In Your Pocket, Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?

It’s completely possible to imagine that if you’re going out in the woods for an extended period of time, you may at some point want to cut some wood down. Axes have been known to make a quick number out of this task, but carrying them with you in your backpack can be very inconvenient. Not so much if you get a Klax. It’s a detachable axe head that features a special clamp, allowing you to secure it to any piece of wood you find (and which fits the clamp). So, put it in your pocket, go camping, and whip it out when you need to get your cutting on. But… we haven’t told you the best part yet. Most of the models feature multi-tools, which could come in super handy in the wilderness. Take the Klax Lumberjack, for example. It has: a Stainless Steel Ax Blade, Hammer Head, Hex Wrench Set, 1/4” Bit Drive Socket, Bottle Opener, Lanyard Hole, Caribiner, Ruler and KLAX Clamping System!

Different models come with different sets of tools, and will set you back different amounts. The top of the line model, made of Titanium, is $550. But the other ones range between a much more reasonable $115 to $160.

It Turns Out It’s Possible To Reinvent The Axe

Vipukirves-590x330

Oldie but goodie here.

Axes have been round for quite a while; after all, what’s simpler than driving a sharp metal edge into a piece of wood? Unlike the wheel however, the tool’s longevity doesn’t mean its design can’t be improved upon. Take the Vipukirves axe pictured above. It helps you split wood more easily by offsetting the center of mass to the side. This way, each time you drive the axe down onto your log, you’ll also generate some rotational torque. This torque, applied to the part of the axe that’s already in the wood, acts as a lever and splits the wood down its fibre, reducing the amount of force needed to accomplish the same results. It’s ingenious and simple, and if the video below is anything to go by, does actually appear to improve on the old design. Sadly, innovation often doesn’t come cheap, and the Vipukirves is no exception. Owning one will set you back €155.74 or about $215, plus €47.26 ($65) in shipping.
