The Future of Farming Looks Incredible!

The rapidly growing demand for fresh produce will lead to farming requiring a dramatic change in logistics if it’s going to be able to cater to the ever-increasing population. The Valtra Vertical Farming Tractor has been designed with both logistics and the rather incredible vertical farming firmly in mind.

The tractor is just part of a full eco-system that features a savvy drone logistic system and belt driven hydroponic system! The second of the two aforementioned elements is where the crops are grown; the scrolling belt is driven at one end, by the tractor, allowing for a speedy harvest that maximizes efficiency.

The drone logistics system seamlessly transports the harvested crops, that are rapidly collected by the tractor, out of the way and ready for shipment! This error-free method of logistics allows the tractor to continuously harvest without interruption! And let’s be honest, if this is what the future of farming looks likes… then it sure looks good!

This project was submitted to the Valtra Design challenge 2018. The jury selected it for the first prize because of its holistic and new farming approach. It addresses the current and future problem of a sustainable food source. The concept proved advanced yet with still a high development potential.

A Tractor on Steroids

Red is a semi-autonomous machine with a nearly unlimited number of heavy duty applications from forestry to construction thanks to its shape-shifting design. Its unique symmetrical structure enables instantaneous switching between moving directions. Additionally, each of its “limbs” can extend or contract to accommodate varying needs and spatial requirements. All of the wheels are equipped with all-electric motors so power is distributed individually.

Its autonomous drive system also aims to improve work safety and productivity. Using infrared scanners, Red can travel autonomously between sites, programmed to follow patterned routes via GPS, track human operated vehicles, or be controlled remotely to execute more precise tasks and maneuvers.

As for safety, infrared laser scanners are installed on both sides of the bonnet and in front of the mudguards for 360 degree obstacle detection and collision avoidance. Active sensors emit high intensity illumination, making working at dark as efficient and safe as during daytime. Both ends are also equipped with optical cameras for remote control in more delicate situations.
