Suchandra Basu:

For art enthusiasts, the pull of exquisite pieces steeped in history is simply irresistible. We had earlier seen works of art fetching big bucks at auctions. Besides the brilliant photographic capture of the River Rhine, Cindy Sherman’s 1981 photo “Untitled #96″ fetched $3.89 million. And, now Bonhams is offering a whole collection of scale photography for art lovers. The Bonham’s Book, Maps, Manuscripts and Historical Photographs sale in London this June is all set to showcase a copy of the largest book of photographs. An out and out collector’s delight, the book is expected to fetch $77,715-108,801.

Vacheron Constantin Enamel dial Reference 4270 watch is for serious collectors

Suchandra Basu:

Vacheron Constantin has always been known for their exceptional timepieces. The best of horological complications and designing knowhow, the Swiss watch manufacturer is known for its premium watches; from chronograph watches to tourbillon and jewellery watches. If Tour De I’lle from the stable of Vacheron Constantin is one of the most expensive watches ever, then Quai de I’lle, another Vacheron masterpiece is one of the most unusual luxury wrist watches . And, time now for Reference 4270 to hog the limelight. Created in 1953, it is widely believed to be one of a four watch series released specifically for the American markets. Apart from the fact that it can almost be classified as vintage, there are several other factors which drive the watch’s value. The enamel dial is a case in point. Design wise, the dial represents a brilliant canvas of flowing lines, which depict plucky rooster like figures. With shades of turquoise, blue and teal forming the backdrop, the dial comes off looking catchy and exceptional.

Elizabeth Taylor’s Customized Dressing Room for "Cleopatra" goes on sale

Suchandra Basu:

Thirty nine years after its official release, Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s Cleopatra is back in news for a new reason. The dressing room trailer used by Elizabeth “Cleopatra” Taylor during the film’s shoot is up for grabs. The pre-sale estimate ranges around $50,000 to $75,000. A lavish studio with customized features, the trailer was built by Twentieth Century Fox for a staggering $75,000 at Profiles in History’s upcoming “Icons of Hollywood” auction. The trailer was provided to help Taylor get into the skin of her character of the Egyptian Queen. Hence, everything, right from the size to the features, bears a touch of elegance and sophistication. Moving inside, you would be greeted by rose colored carpet and hand painted ceilings. The bedroom is a fairytale of hand painted murals and detailed crown moldings. Columned furniture is another thing you are going to encounter in generous amounts here. Silk curtains hanging in semi circular patterns form the partition between the bedroom and the living area. This particular design aspect was added to make Taylor feel like Cleopatra.

Gianni Versace’s home in Miami goes for sale at $125 million

Suchandra Basu:

Spacious and grand as it may appear, yet Casa Casuarina brings back memories of a dreaded day. On July 15, 1997, it was on the steps on this very Miami mansion that Andrew Cunanan assassinated Gianni Versace. Fifteen years long years since one of the most celebrated fashion figures of our times collapsed to death at Casa Casuarina and the place still continues to draw visitors. Tourists and Versace enthusiasts gather across the street from the house only to hear snippets of its past from guides. If you are born rich with millions of bucks to spare on a property, then the good news is, you can do more than just book a suite at Casa Casuarina (it is a boutique hotel now) or simply ogle at it, for the lavish mansion has gone on sale and the price, we hear, comes round to a staggering $125 million.

Indian artist Jehangir Sabavala’s painting sets record at bonhams sale

Suchandra Basu:

A stunning piece, a brilliant canvas dotted with allegories- Vespers I by Jehangir Sabavala sets records at Bonhams by selling for $391,021 (£253,650). While the celebrated auction house’s annual summer sale of Modern and Contemporary South Asian art remained packed with a number of mesmerizing creations from the region, Sabavala’s painting was undoubtedly the show stealer. It surpassed pre-sale estimates £100,000-150,000, even triggering a sales room tussle between two bidders. Displayed for the first time at Jehangir art gallery in Bombay, the painting is often considered as one of Sabavala’s most notable works. Vespers I is the perfect representation of a transitory phase in the artist’s oeuvre.
