LG Reveals 88-inch 8K OLED Display: “8” Is a Magic Number

When it comes to displays, companies push out new models that focus on three main areas: bigger, brighter, and higher-resolution. This latest offering from LG is no exception. The Korean consumer electronics maker has officially announced a display that they claim is the world’s first 88-inch 8K display. 4K is the standard at the moment, and much of our content isn’t even in that resolution yet, but LG is thinking ahead, since 8K will likely become the next standard. After that, who knows? 16K? 32K? Oh-K we’ve had enough. The truth is, it is never enough. We can always make better and better displays as the tech improves. Direct retinal implants, here we come!

LG says that their latest display offers a 7680 × 4320 resolution, which makes it 16 times higher compared to Full HD, and four times higher than UHD. Using OLED means that this 88-inch 8K display can be kept nice and slim because the OLEDs do not require backlighting like LCDs. Fewer components are also needed, it uses less energy, and helps to keep costs down. Slim, huge and less expensive. We like that. Of course, there’s no way this thing is going to be cheap.

If you want to see it in person, LG will be showing this beast off at CES 2018. We don’t have any info yet on price or when it will be available, but expect it to cost as much as a nice car.
