More than a Door

Whether you’re leaving or staying, the front door is usually your first and last point of contact with your home… so why shouldn’t it be as multifunctional and helpful as say, your smartphone?

Introducing, the Smart Door. It’s designed to keep homeowners safe from break-ins, fire, and other accidents. In addition, it incorporates weather and thermal sensors; it is integrated with thermal and video cameras. This door reminds the owners to take an umbrella if it is raining or give a simple reminder if there is to be a change in weather. Smart Door also watches over those who are inside and watches out for those outside. It knows its owners, differentiates between pets and can even be used to set reminders for dog walking.

With a mobile phone or a tablet application, one can use the system to control and monitor the house. The basic functions include: a safety lock, full length camera view of visitors, a protection system for children, a full report on the movements in and around the house, and more. Coolest of all, changeable Smart Door designs and colors to customize your entrance!

Smart Door is a 2015 Red Dot Award: Design Concept winner.

Avian-inspired Architecture

At the entrance of the landmark city of Mashhad, Iran, this “living architecture” is inspired by the birds inhabiting the city’s Imam Reza shrine, where tourists flock to take in the architecture & avian dwellers. Driving visitors are greeted by a 28 meter high pillar with moving wings powered when incoming vehicles drive over a subtle bump connected to system of cables & gears. Nestled amidst the ancient backdrop, this modern marvel stands out as both a tribute to one of the city’s historic attractions & a symbol of its importance in the world of tomorrow.

Nokia and AOL announce Entrance, an entertainment app for Nokia’s Windows Phone devices

Nokia and AOL to release Entrance, an entertainment app for Nokia's Windows Phone devices

In case you didn't notice, Microsoft and Nokia are holding a pretty major press event right now, and while we've mainly been waiting for some shiny new hardware, a few fresh apps never hurt either. Nokia just made a joint announcement with AOL, unveiling an entertainment hub called Entrance, which will be available only on Nokia's Windows Phone devices. AOL (which happens to be Engadget's parent company) naturally used the app as a way to highlight its various properties, including Moviefone, AOL Music and Huffington Post Entertainment. So, for example, you might watch trailers or buy tickets on Moviefone, or read news from HuffPo. Like its various Android apps, it includes Shoutcast Radio integration with streaming from over 55,000 radio stations worldwide. Perhaps the most compelling bit, though, is an augmented reality feature with overlays for movie posters and show times. The app's free and available for download at the source link below, and we've also got some screenshots to help give you a sense for the look and feel.
