The fire-fighting fortress!

rook_safety_1

Cleverly named after the Rook (Castle) in Chess, the Rook Home Fire Safety system dedicates itself to protecting the house from any fire hazard.

The Rook is made of four components, named after parts of a castle too. Just the way a kingdom works in synergy to keep itself protected from attacks, the four components of the Rook stay interconnected and work together to alert the user against fire, and help him/her fight a fire hazard. The Castle and the Watchtower detect CO levels and signs of smoke. When a threat is assessed, the Keep (kept at the bedside) sends out alerts. The Moat is a powder based fire-extinguisher, helping fight the fire threat.

Not only is the Rook Home Fire Safety system well articulated and named, it has a homogeneous design language too. All the four components have a soft yet reassuring design language. While the Castle, Watchtower, and Keep are white, allowing them to blend in with the decor, the Moat is a bright red, characteristic of a Fire Extinguisher, allowing it to be seen even in thick smoke. What do you think?

The doorknob that cries “Fire!”

bleep_handle_1

I just had to leave this design for the end of the week. The Bleep is unsuspecting, apparently mundane, but incredible to the extent that it may save lives one day. Ever thought a door handle could prevent death?! Think again! Imagine there’s a fire in the next room. There’s smoke everywhere, so you really couldn’t tell which room was the source. You’re trying to escape and you accidentally open the door into a room that’s absolutely covered in flames. First of all, you’d burn your hand off the red-hot doorknob. The Bleep is pretty simple, but highly effective. It has a hole running from one side of the door to another, with a whistle in the middle. If the room across was ever on fire, the lack of oxygen would cause air from one room to travel through the doorknob to the other room, through the whistle, therefore making a piercing shrill noise. Now you know which door leads to impending doom, and which one leads to safety. Absolutely amazing!

The awesomeness of the Bleep doorknob earned it the Red Dot Design Award in 2015.

Chick-a-Dee Bird Shaped Smoke Detector

chickadee smoke detector Chick a Dee Bird Shaped Smoke Detector
Most smoke detectors are your standard round shape. But does something that’s such a prominent fixture in your home really have to be so boring? No. The Chick-a-Dee Smoke Detector designed by Louise van der Veld is a smoke detector shaped like a bird on a perch. Like a coal miner’s canary, this bird does a “chick-a-dee-dee” call at the first sign of trouble before emitting a louder more sustained 85db sound if smoke is detected.
