This “Smart” Fingerprint Padlock Is Easily Defeated with a Screwdriver

Check out this fingerprint padlock. It was sent to lockpicking hobbyist LockPickingLawyer for review. It didn’t take him long to figure out that this lock can be disassembled by simply removing three Torx screws around the bezel. You don’t need a LockPickingLawyer to know that this isn’t going to keep anything secure.

So you can remove all of the screws, get the shackle opened, and then screw it back up and relock the lock without anyone knowing. This is truly an innovation in home security and an innovation for thieves. So LockPickingLawyer let the manufacturer know about this critical design flaw, they responded:

the lock is invincible to the people who do not have a screw driver.

Good point. It’s super hard for criminals to acquire Torx screwdrivers, especially after they passed those anti-screwdriver laws.

Here’s what you do as a criminal. You gift this lock to someone who is not very smart. Someone who won’t notice the screw on the lock. They use it and then you come over and steal a bunch of their things.

Seriously, this is the worst lock ever. Check out the screenshot of the conversation with the manufacturer, who is either clueless or just doesn’t care.

BoxLock is a Better Solution Than Amazon Key, But I Have An Even Better Idea

So Amazon Key sounds like fun, right? I mean, even lawyers are getting in on the fun times being had over at Amazon. But there’s a better solution than giving a delivery driver temporary access to your house.

It’s called the BoxLock and it’s a smart padlock that allows delivery drivers to safety store your packages without giving them freedom to scope out your valuables, depending on how much you value your garden gnomes. The padlock only opens when it’s used to scan the barcode of the arriving package, then it’ll open and give access to whatever storage box you want the delivery guy to use.

It’s on Kickstarter now for $129, and while it’s better than putting your faith in Amazon Key, I think I have an easier (and cheaper) solution.

Just leave an open padlock attached to the storage trunk and tell the delivery guy to lock it once he puts the packages in. Packages are safe, no one else has access. Genius, right? It’s almost like package delivery isn’t rocket science.

This padlock is transparent with open chambers on all the moving parts so you can see how it works. You will get to know how the pins work when a key is inserted. You can see the pins moving up and down as the key slides into and out of the lock. This should be all you need to learn how a lock works.

Master Lock DialSpeed Padlock: The Lock from the Future

Who doesn’t remember using combination locks at school or at your gym? Well it looks like Master Lock has taken it upon itself to push the old combination lock into the future, thanks to its new padlock, which features an electronic interface.

The Master Lock DialSpeed Padlock has a light-up interface where the combination wheel should be, and it allows you to program multiple personalized codes, as well as setting up a permanent master code if you should forget your code. It has a boron carbide shackle, a wide metal body that’s easy to grasp and easy to open with one hand.

The DialSpeed Padlock sells for $25(USD). The only real flaw I can see with this is that it is battery powered, though the battery should give you five years of service before needing a replacement.
