Need a Tech-Free Weekend? Then Sign Up For a Weekend at Camp Grounded

Digital Detox

Most people walk around with a gadget in their hands or pressed to their ears these days. People are getting too “social” but in the virtual sense and losing touch with the real world–and with their real friends as a result. If you feel like this is happening to you, then it’s time for an intervention of sorts. You can start with some digital detox at Camp Grounded to wean yourself off from your gadgets or social media addiction.

Of course, you can just pocket the $350 that the three-day camp will cost, but then you might just crack and fail with all the technological temptations surrounding you.

Camp Grounded held their first camp last June, where all slots were sold out. It’s described as a place “where grown-ups go to unplug, getaway [sic] and be kids again.” The camp is held at Camp Navarro in the Redwoods of Northern California and includes activities that you probably enjoyed at camp when you were a kid: sing-along sessions, bonfires, archery, and capture the flag. Other activities like writing sessions and creative workshops were also thrown into the mix.

Camp Grounded is offered by Digital Detox, a company that organizes “off the grind” retreats.

Camp Grounded is Digital Detox for Adults

When a night out involves bringing two smartphones, a music player, a 7-inch tablet, and a 10-inch tablet, then you know you’ve got a problem. Most people are addicted to tech these days, and it ruins more social events than you think.

This reality is what prompted Digital Detox to come up with a camp offering for adults addicted to their gadgets called Camp Grounded.

Camp Grounded

It’s a three-day camp where the usage of digital devices isn’t allowed at all. It’s described as a gathering “where grown-ups go to unplug, getaway [sic] and be kids again.” Typical camping activities are scheduled throughout the weekend, from bonfires and sing-alongs to capture the flag and archery.

Other activities include writing sessions and creative workshops. Digital Detox held the first Camp Grounded this past June, where each slot cost $350(USD). You’ll be surprised to know that all slots sold out. No word on timing for the next Camp Grounded session, but you can get on their email notification list here.

Sticks of light save your snowbound night

For those about to camp in dangerous or otherwise unsettling environments, remember that you’ve always got LED lamps on your side. In this case is via Kairi Eguchi’s design LET Touch Stick, a device which breaks up into parts for easy carrying and otherwise provides solar-charged sticks of light for safety. These lights are able to stay on all night or blink off and on throughout the night so you can safely be rescued by the forces that be from your long-lost place of snow-bound camp.

This design is made to be both easily packable and easy to use in emergency situations. As Eguchi notes, you’ll want to leave the charging panels revealed to the sun all day long, then toss your lights out at night if you do so happen to come into an emergency situation. And for those of you looking to get some extra use out of these lovely beasts if you’re not in trouble – just flip em on in your tent!
