Xbox Design Lab Lets You Customize Your Controllers

I never understood gamers who get want to deck out their controllers in fancy colors. You ask them why and they say they want to stand out from the crowd. Really? While playing games in your home in the dark? Well, obviously gamers don’t care what I think, since so many of them dish out money for colorful controllers. And if you like colorful gaming gear, Xbox is here to help.

Along with that new white Xbox One S, Microsoft has unveiled Xbox Design Lab, which is a site that lets you customize your controller’s color from about eight million different color combinations. Perfect if you want more colorful versions of the new Xbox One controller, which was also unveiled today and feature Bluetooth connectivity with increased range, a more robust thumbstick and a textured grip for better feel.

These custom controllers will cost you $80(USD) through the Xbox Design Lab site, but laser engraved Gamertag customization will cost an extra $10(USD).

To match Electrolux’s spiffy new look (dat logo tho!), Electrolux Design Lab is getting a makeover of its own! The 13th year of the challenge features a new theme, new focus areas, new judges, new experts to guide the finalists, and… DOUBLE PRIZE MONEY! Mmmhmm. So get amped about this year’s theme, Happy Healthy Kids… because… after all, you were a tike once too! REGISTER HERE and get your submission in by the April 8th deadline. Stumped on where to start? That’s normal. If we learned anything from interviewing last years finalists, it’s that inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere, sometimes when you least expect it. Here are a few of our pointers to get your wheels turning!

  • Read the 2015 brief… over… and over… and over.
  • Don’t procrastinate. Register now so you can focus on your submission.
  • Check out the 2014 finalists and see what set the winners apart from the rest.
  • Watch last year’s live presentations. Listen to the judges’ questions!
  • Get in the field: Go where kids go! Hang out with a little brother, niece, or friend’s kiddo! Ask their parents questions!
  • Fall in love with Electrolux: Familiarize yourself with the brand’s aesthetic, history, products, and design principles.
  • Play: Pick up some kid-centric products and channel your inner youngster.
  • Imagine yourself as the user. After all, YOUR design is a reflection of YOU!
  • Relax: Take a warm bath. Walk in the park. Let your brain reset.
  • Don’t relax: Go on a hike! Hit the gym! Endorphins get your mind moving.
  • Think BIG. Don’t play it safe.
  • Read the brief. AGAIN!

2013 Electrolux Design Lab LIVE on YD!!

On October 16th, 8 finalists out of more than 1700 submissions will go head to head, vying for the top spot in the 2013 Electrolux Design Lab competition. YD will be reporting live from the event in Stockholm, Sweden to give you instant access to all the drama, blood, sweat, tears, fist fights and hair pulling. Ok… so maybe no fist fights or hair pulling, but something’s bound to go down! Tune in to our Facebook, Twitter and YD. Tweet your vote to win a unique experience for two in a restaurant with Electrolux appliances in either Santceloni in Madrid, Iggy’s in Singapore or Attimo in São Paulo. In the meantime, check out the 8 finalists’ incredible concepts here and cast your vote!

Think you’ve got what it takes to be a judge? Vote for your favorite here and see if your pick wins the People’s Choice Award! Then share your vote on Twitter with the hashtag #FutureHome for a chance to win a unique experience for two in a restaurant with Electrolux appliances!

  • After choosing your favorite, the vote can be shared in social media using #FutureHome.
  • By sharing the vote in Twitter you can take part in a competition where you can win a unique experience for two in a restaurant with Electrolux appliances in either Santceloni in Madrid, Iggy’s in Singapore or Attimo in São Paulo.
  • In the tweet you are asked to tell why the concept you have voted for is something you would like to have in your home in the future.
  • Electrolux will choose the winner with the most creative and convincing answer and the winner will receive a restaurant experience in the location closest to where they live.
  • The prize includes a restaurant meal, travel costs and one night in a hotel in the destination.
  • The competition closes October 15 and the winner will be announced in the Electrolux social media channels October 16.
