Looks like animal rights group PETA has found something else to be upset about. Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has the animal rights group in an uproar over portrayals of whaling in the game. A game which has not yet been released – which may or may not feature whaling in the game.
All the group knows for sure is what we know – that in a screenshot for the game, a whale is seen – and whaling is rumored to appear in some form in the game. So apparently video games not only cause violence, they could potentially cause you to go out and kill whales. Apparently, that is what they think…
Whaling – that is, shooting whales with harpoons and leaving them to struggle for an hour or more before they die or are hacked apart while they are still alive – may seem like something out of the history books, but this bloody industry still goes on today in the face of international condemnation, and it’s disgraceful for any game to glorify it. PETA encourages video game companies to create games that celebrate animals – not games that promote hurting and killing them.
I think that any civilized person alive today hates that whaling still goes on in this day and age, but give it a rest PETA. There are real animal crimes that you could be investigating. Everybody needs to stfu and stop blaming video games for things that they wish were different in our world. Thank God I’m usually too busy playing games to pay much attention to these idiots.

I have nothing against PETA. In fact, I support them for taking such a strong and passionate stand against animal abuse. I know a lot of people disapprove of their shock-value tactics, but hey, they’re free to do whatever they feel works for them. But I think the line has to be drawn somewhere, and I think it has to be drawn here with their new campaign against Pokemon.
Apparently, PETA thinks the Pokemon are being held against their will in Unova and they insist that the time these fictional creatures stay locked in their pokebolls is ‘akin to how elephants are chained up in train carts.’ I don’t approve of circuses keeping animals in captivity just to make them perform, but somehow this Pokemon campaign makes me think that PETA is running out of ways to get their message across the right and sensible way. They’ve released a parody game called ‘Pokemon Black and Blue’ to spearhead their campaign, which you can check out and play after the break.
Oh, the insanity.
