Sony to release a 12-inch tablet in 2015

Sony is, according to some sources, working on a new tablet for 2015, one that would be over 12 inches in size. And that sounds just incredible for remote play with a PS4, doesn’t it?

A prototype by Sony, dubbed the Xperia Z4 Tablet Ultra had been making the rounds a while ago with top of the line specs, and a monstrous 12.9 inch size. Yet, according to Digitimes from Taiwan, this is far more than a concept proof, and they suggest Sony themselves might decide to compete head on with Samsung and Apple. If any company is big enough for that, that would be Sony, right?

Rumors say this tablet would release at a premium price, above $1,000 USD, but with monster specs to match. It would sport a 12.97-inch display capable of 3,840 X 2,400 pixels resolution with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 6GB of RAM (that’s almost as much as a PS4. or 12 PS Vitas), and all of that at mere 8.6mm wide.

While Sony themselves remain silent about this, the idea sounds exciting to say the least.

Sony Xperia Tablet S sales said to resume 'gradually' next month

Following the unexpected sales halt from earlier this month due to issues with build quality, Sony has taken to its Japanese portal to announce that the Xperia Tablet S will be returning to shelves later next month. Per the company, sales of the 9.4-inch, Ice Cream Sandwich slate are scheduled to kick off again starting mid-November (albeit in small dozes), with the outfit emphasizing that it's still offering a free-of-charge inspection / repair service to customers who might be affected by the leaky woes. Unfortunately, a "mid-November" estimate is all we have at this point, but you can be certain we'll let you know as soon as Sony gives us a more concrete date.

For Sony, it's all about the presentation. To be sure, since the company put all of its mobile products under one roof, it's achieved more of a balance between style and substance than it did with the original Tablet S and Tablet P -- two devices that had a lopsided emphasis on unique, proof-of-concept designs over user experience. It's fair to say those initial tablet efforts failed to resonate with consumers, leaving the company with little recourse other than an all-out do-over.

Which is why the new Xperia Tablet S has a lot to prove: it can't get by based on looks alone. Running skinned Ice Cream Sandwich and packing a quad-core Tegra 3 SoC, this 9.4-incher maintains the same 1,280 x 800 IPS LCD panel used on the first-gen S, and even assumes the same folded-over magazine shape -- albeit, in thinner form. Yes, that full SD slot remains, but you might not need to rely on it now that the tablet comes with up to 64GB of built-in storage. So, will an emphasis on OS, ecosystem (Video Unlimited, Music Unlimited, Crackle, Reader, etc.) and a slimmed-down build make up for the blunders of the first-gen Tablet S? Will a $399 starting price help this WiFi-only tab stand out amongst the Android competition? Stick around as we find out whether this S is more than initially meets the eye.

Sony Xperia tablet reappears in new photos, adds a few more details

While most of the intrigue about Sony's next tablet evaporated in a barrage of leaked slides, a few press renders offer us a closer look at the Tablet S replacement. Proudly emblazoned with the Xperia brand, the tablet steps closer to Sony's smartphone family, with a texturized backing likely to keep fingertips happy. We've included a second picture after the break, showing that a substantial bezel is still part of the design and confirming that we'll be playing with Android 4.0, if not Google's very latest OS. XDA-developers has a few more images to show off at the link below.

Sony's next-generation tablet appears to have leaked on internal slides spotted by German news site, Mobiflip. In short, it's thinner and lighter than the Tablet S, while internal specifications also trump it, including a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, Android 4.0 ("or later"), 3G connectivity and three storage options; 16, 32 and 64GB. The whole tablet follows the same folded magazine design of Sony's existing tablet, is splashproof and houses a 6,000mAh battery that the slides suggest will manage 10 hours of WiFi-based web browsing. There's even some tentative pricing, with the different-sized models marked up at $450, $550 and $650, respectively. The pictures also cover Sony's plans to add a lightweight keyboard to its next tablet, similar to Microsoft's Surface plans, but with some Smart Cover-esque kickstand skills thrown in for good measure. We've added a shot of the keyboard cover after the break, but you can take a tour of the rest of the slides -- which include a raft of accessories and docks -- at the source link below.

Update: We've been in touch with a Sony spokesperson, who had "no comment at this stage." We may have to wait until next month, when European trade show IFA kicks off -- with Sony in attendance -- until we hear anything more concrete.
