Hyperkin Ultra GB: An Aluminum Game Boy Classic

Nostalgia among gaming nerds is big business. The NES and SNES Classic Edition retro consoles are still selling out. Obviously a Game Boy Classic Edition must be on the way from Nintendo, right? Maybe, but Hyperkin is working on its own remake and beating them to the punch. The Hyperkin Ultra GB is still in development, but it already looks amazing.

It may look a lot like the original Game Boy, but this handheld’s housing is made from aluminum. It has the original’s volume and contrast dials, however the final version will have a third dial to adjust the new backlit LCD display. That backlight can also be turned off, if you want an authentic and annoying true Game Boy experience, or can be set to that greenish tint you might remember.

Other features include a built-in six-hour battery, USB-C port for charging, stereo speakers, and left and right audio-out connections. Yes, it’s true that game Boy games only generate mono sound, but the speakers are there because the Ultra GB is also being optimized for chiptune musicians who use the Game Boy to create electronic tunes.

There’s no way that Nintendo would have made a replica of this quality. Look at it. It’s beautiful. Solid. I love it. Hyperkin is hoping to have it ready for late Summer of this year, for under $100. It will play all of your classic Game Boy games, and maybe even your Game Boy Color games.
