iPhone 6 Scratched Screen Issue Could be the New ‘Bendgate’

iPhone 6 Plus vs iPhone 6

After iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate upset many Apple fans, yet another issue with the iPhone 6′s hardware threatens to disappoint.

Announced back in September, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus quickly became a ‘must have’ item. Only, upon release, Apple’s latest flagship smartphone didn’t display the quality that had been offered.

While a plethora of iOS 8 problems (including one that wouldn’t let users make calls) broke the software, iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate was a massive hardware problem instead. Thousands of users reported that the aluminium body of their iPhone 6 Plus had been bending under pressure – including when the phone was put into a tight, jean pocket.

At the time, Apple stock prices tumbled and so the company vehemently denied it saying that just nine people had reported bending. But with iPhone 6 screens now also being an issue, this is one problem the company can’t afford to ignore.

According to AppleInsider, many iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users have had to cart their handsets off to Apple Stores to report odd scratches with their screens. Users in the official forum are reporting that the scratches even show up after the utmost of care and the thread has now been viewed over 100,000 times, seeming to suggest that plenty are looking for advice. Meanwhile, the publication also notes that the scratches on their iPhones were so deep that they could be felt with a thumbnails and seen when the device is off.

The reason for this could be the fact that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have no bezel as Apple have used a curved display glass to make the phone look and feel better instead. But at what cost? With the previous iPhone 5 design thrown out (the iPhone 5 used flat pieces of glass surrounded in thermoplastic and polymer), the new iPhone 6 models offer lesser shock resistance and less scratch resistance too since laying your phone on its face leaves it completely vulnerable to scratches from whatever you laid it down on.

Sadly, while the problem seems to be quite a serious issue, Apple doesn’t have specific rules on how to deal with it. Some users said that they got new screens from the Apple Store while others said that heading in-store proved fruitless. Still, if you are having problems with your iPhone’s screen, you should at least test your chances and visit Apple to see what they can do.

gTool PanelPress Unbends iPhone 6/6 Plus

Did you accidentally bend your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus? Don’t throw it away just yet. Your local repair shop just might be able to do something about it with the help of the PanelPress, a specialized pair of clamps from gTool that lets you slowly bend the phone back (or at least close to) its original shape. If on the other hand you intentionally bent your phone to “test” its durability, I hope your local repair shop never gets a PanelPress.

The clamps should also work with the iPhone 5 and 5S in addition to the newest models. Check out the video to see how the PanelPress is used.

I don’t think it can perfectly straighten bent iPhones, but it’s still better than nothing. Update: As Grace mentioned in the comments, the PanelPress is available exclusively through eTech Parts for $300 (USD). Keep an eye on gTool’s resellers – one of which is the dependable iFixit – to see when the PanelPress will be in stock.

Samsung Torture Tests Galaxy Note 4 with Robot Butt

If you follow the tech world at all, you know about the “bendgate” saga with the new iPhone 6 Plus. Apple says that a handful of the larger iPhone models bent in the pockets of owners. The bending of the iPhone 6 Plus kicked off a slew of tests to show what phones will bend and which ones won’t.

Samsung has devised the ultimate test for its Galaxy Note 4. Not only did they use the boring three-point pressure test where a machine presses on the phone to see if it bends or breaks. The Note 4 passed that test. Samsung also went the extra mile and used a high-tech robotic butt to smash its ass into the smartphone hundreds of times.

The robotic butt was tuned to simulate a 220 pound man sitting on the smartphone. Naturally, the Note 4 survived the buttocks beat down as well. The robot butt even wore jeans.

Of course, if you want to be sure your phone doesn’t get damaged from sitting on it, just keep it in your front pocket.

iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate Highlights Massive Design Flaw

iPhone 6 Bendgate

As the iPhone 6 Plus racks up millions of sales, Apple’s new handset is hit with controversy as the phones begin to bend under normal usage.

There are lots of things that made the Apple iPhone 6 Plus a huge talking point just a few weeks ago. For one, it was the iPhone moniker that got everyone whipped up into a frenzy, while Apple also explained that the device has a better battery life than its predecessor and is also the most powerful iPhone ever. But on top of this many were also hooting and hollering about the device’s size as at 5.5 inches the iPhone 6 Plus is a certified phablet (phone/tablet hybrid). And while this size has its advantages for watching TV shows and playing games, it also has its downsides and with iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate, a massive design flaw could spoil everyone’s fun.

iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate, to give it its headline-friendly nickname, is the controversy about the iPhone 6 Plus’ bending. Coming to light after some users reported that their handsets beginning to look warped or bent after normal usage, many were concerned that their phones would lose their shape. Investigating, Lewis Hilsenteger of YouTube channel UnboxTherapy made the above video to prove that despite Apple saying that just nine people had reported that their iPhone 6 Plus’ had been bending, the flaw clearly isn’t a fluke.

In his video, he chalked down the iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate problems to the phone’s aluminium body. The phone is huge and aluminium is a famously malleable material so did that mean that the iPhone 6, the HTC One (M8) and other aluminium based phones are susceptible to bends too? It didn’t, actually, as Hilsenteger’s above video proved. All of the phones ‘bend tested’ in his footage proved to be fine – there were some creaks but nothing as major as the iPhone 6 Plus’ issues.

This is terrible news for Apple, not least because they now have thousands of customers wanting answers as to why they sacrificed the device’s bulk for a slimmer device that actually loses its shape, but because Bendgate is seeing them lose money. Combined with iOS 8 problems, Apple’s stock dropped drastically last week showing that this is a controversy they’d like to avoid in the future. That could mean that future iPhones become a little thicker but as those horrendous bends could potentially damage the innards of the phone too, this is a small thing to concede.

OMG #Bendgate: Bent iPhone 6 Plus Devices Will Be Replaced Under Warranty

iphone6-bend-test

Set aside world hunger, rampant terrorism, an increasingly ambitious Russia… forget all that stuff: the new iPhone 6 Plus has a tendency to bend in people’s pockets! But fret not, if your skinny jeans have given Cupertino’s new mini iPad mini an unintended curve, word is that it can be replaced under warranty.

Folks at TheNextWeb asked about the issue via Apple support chat were the representative said it is “100 percent up to the Genius you speak at the store.” The Genius will first conduct a test which is called the Visual Mechanical Inspection and if it passes that the unit will be replaced under warranty, provided that all of the guidelines are met. If not then customers will have to pay for a replacement.

It sounds like Apple is still deciding how to handle the issue, and it’s a little disconcerting to know that the fate of your super expensive giant phone is completely in the hands of a potentially pretentious Apple Genius. And we’re not sure what those guidelines are, but we suppose they involve there not being an obvious ding that would indicate the phone was dropped, rather than gently bent while in the comfort of your hipster pants.
