GPS-enabled shoelaces. Yay or Nay?

Any privacy-intruding piece of technology can be pretty controversial because it can be used for good as well as bad (take the entire Facebook clusterf*** as the biggest example). The pLaces (clever name alert) are shoe-laces with a GPS tracker embedded in them. Aside from helping you find your shoes if you’re the kind to lose them, the laces were created to help you get away from the addictive world of technology… but not wander to a point of no-return.

The pLaces come with a kevlar and carbon-fiber construction. Designed to be absolutely unbreakable, the shoelaces are the perfect partner on one of those crazy off-the-grid treks or trails. The GPS chip inside pairs with your phone and connects to the pLaces application, allowing you to track or bookmark your travels or share your route/location with others. The GPS-enabled laces can charge wirelessly via the pLaces clip charger, and works with any shoe. It also comes with a 4-week battery life.

The fact that you, the wearer, send your location to others makes it less of a privacy-breach-nightmare. With the ability to track the laces across 166 countries (practically the entire world), the pLaces can be a literal life-saver, allowing people to reach you if something untoward were to happen. Now if only they had an SOS function too…

Elastic Shoelaces Are For The More… Efficient Among Us

elastic-shoelace-system-640x533

Ok, fine, just call us lazy. But given the opportunity to not tie our shoelaces on a daily basis, why say no? That’s not to say we should turn to Velcro. What are we, 5? But these Elastic Shoelaces seem like a good in-between. They’re made from “a memory-fit performance elastomer’, which is BS-speak for ‘elastic material’… but they do at least look decent and give you the option to customize your fit. Whether you like your footwear tight or loose, you can pick the size for you and never have to worry about tying anything ever again; just loop through, and snap together. Each pack contains 14 of them, and costs $15.

Out in the woods and managed to both lose your lighter and get your matches wet? If you were smart enough to tie your boots with these Flint Laces from RattlerStrap, you can still hope for a dry and warm night. The tip of each lace features a “1 inch ferro rod capped with rubber. This is just enough to produce a robust spark to start a fire in the wilderness. Remove and strike with a steel edge.” The laces themselves are made from Type lll 7 strand 550 Paracord, which sounds robust enough to even the toughest terrains. And considering they cost all of $14 for a pair, there’s really no reason not to get them.
