Platform Agnostic Alcatel Pixi 3 Runs WP, Android or Firefox OS

Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 3

Two days after teasing the world with the resurrection of the Palm trademark as an Android smartphone, Alcatel makes the news again with the newest member of the Pixi family, a smartphone capable of running Windows Phone, Android or Firefox OS.

The days when our smartphones are locked to a single operating system seem to be over. The Pixi 3 will pack the necessary hardware for running Microsoft’s WP, Google’s Android or Mozilla’s Firefox OS, the users being able to pick any of these either when buying the phone or at a later point in time. Right now, it is not known how Alcatel plans to implement this, but the new Pixi 3 line will be showcased at CES 2015 in the next few days, so we’ll learn more about it then.

There is a Pixi 3 line, as the OS-agnostic smartphone will not be offered in a single version. Instead, there’s a 3.5″ 3G model, as well as 4-inch, 4.5-inch and 5-inch versions, with the mention that the last three are LTE-compatible. Don’t expect the Pixi 3 phones to have high-end specs, as that’s not going to happen. Alcatel has a specific target audience in mind, and I would say that it is represented by young people, judging by the design of the phones and the available color options.

Alcatel has experience with all of these three mobile operating systems, and the smartphones in its portfolio emphasize this fact. However, offering all three platforms on a single device might turn tricky, and the users might not have the same experience as when using a smartphone built specifically for a single OS.

“Our users do not want complicated systems — they want something familiar from their work environment in the office, but also on a smartphone,” explained Alcatel OneTouch CMO Dan Dery. That makes sense if people are using particular operating systems on their desktops or notebooks that ensure increased compatibility or functionality with specific mobile OS.

Along with the new Pixi 3 smartphones, the company also plans to launch an affordable smartwatch, simply known as the Alcatel OneTouch Watch (now that’s a tongue-twister!). According to the press release, Alcatel intends to make its smartwatch elegant and versatile, at a fraction of the cost of what popular wearables cost today. A demo of the watch and of the proprietary apps will be made at Alcatel’s booth at CES.

ZTE Open C Firefox Phone Goes on an Exclusive Sale on eBay for $99

ZTE Open C

One of ZTE exhibits at Mobile World Congress tradeshow back in February is now the subject of a global sale that takes place exclusively on eBay. The Firefox OS running Open C also has a very attracting price tag, which makes the offer even more irresistible.

Unlike ZTE Open, the first generation of Firefox OS smartphones developed by the Chinese manufacturer that was powered by a single-core 1Ghz CPU, the Open C comes with a Qualcomm dual-core CPU. On top of that, the new handset is equipped with 512MB of RAM and a 4-inch display with a 800×480 pixel resolution. While the 3 MP rear camera was preserved, the company decided to increase the internal storage from 512MB to 4GB. This definitely doesn’t seem like a lot, but considering the needs of the operating system and the target audience of the manufacturer, the specs are more than enough. Not only the specs are decent for first-time smartphone users, but also the distribution channel chosen by ZTE, respectively eBay.

Dr. Li Gong, Mozilla Chief Operating Officer, was definitely happy that the Chinese mobile device manufacturer decided to pick Mozilla’s OS for another device: “We are pleased that ZTE is delivering another Firefox OS device, building on the success of the ZTE Open. The ZTE Open C is an amazing experience for first time smartphone buyers.” It’s great that ZTE and Mozilla have established a precise target audience, namely the people who have never owned a smartphone. This is definitely the case for the majority of the population in developing countries. On top of that, such an entry-level device would make a perfect gift for children who shouldn’t be spoiled with flagship smartphones or other similar products.

On the other hand, John Lin, CEO of eBay Greater China expressed his enthusiasm regarding ZTE’s decision to launch the Open C exclusively on eBay: “We’re excited that ZTE has again decided on debut its OPEN C on eBay. eBay, with its 145 million active buyers around the world, is uniquely positioned to help Chinese brands such as ZTE reach global consumers directly and expand worldwide.”

It’s sad that there aren’t many manufacturers willing to pick up this OS, as some competition could definitely make companies think more about their consumers and less about themselves.

Geeksphone Revolution Gets Software Update and Price Cut

Geeksphone Revolution

The Spanish smartphone maker announced that it will update Revolution to Android KitKat 4.4 in the upcoming days. People opting for Mozilla’s Firefox OS on the same device will also benefit from the latest version of the software.

On top of that, Geeksphone also said it will cut down the price of the Revolution smartphone, to make it an even more attractive option for whoever is looking for a nicely designed device with decent specs. In terms of operating systems, the Spanish company offers CyanogenMod 11, a heavily-modified version of Google’s operating system, as well as Boot2Geekco, Mozilla’s mobile OS that’s better known as Firefox OS.

Mozilla said that Firefox OS 2.0 will be available in beta quite soon, and Geeksphone, as an old partner of the free software community, promised its customers that they will get this soon after the launch.

May 1 marks the begging of the price cut for the Geeksphone Revolution. From this Thursday, whoever wants to buy the Spanish smartphone will have to shell out 199 euros ($276) instead of 222 euros ($307). While not exactly a major discount, this might be just enough for attracting new customers.

Revolution’s technical specs are by no means mind-blowing, since it only has a 4.7-inch display, a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Atom CPU and an 8 MP camera that records video at 1080p resolution. This is not exactly a major downside, as both Android 4.4 KitKat and Firefox OS are optimized to run just fine on mid-range devices.

Besides the solid Revolution, Geeksphone has also worked on Blackphone, a smartphone running PrivatOS, a version of Android focusing on security and encryption. Given the waves that NSA made in recent times, the invention of such secure devices is mandatory. Most people believe that not only NSA is listening in, and that many governmental agencies from all over the world practice this sport. In this context, the idea of having a smartphone that encrypts both voice calls and text messages is really great. If only more smartphone manufacturers were as concerned about our privacy as Geeksphone is, the world would be a much better place.

Also, the idea of running multiple operating systems on mobile devices is very good, as it enables people to get a breath of fresh when they’re getting bored of one of their software.

Mozilla Exhibits $25 Smartphone for Developing Countries

Geeksphone Peak+

It was about time someone made an affordable, yet functional smartphone for countries where technology is still in the early stages.

Geeksphone Peak+ (pictured below) is one of the Firefox OS developer preview devices that I wrote about last year. Even more recently, the same Spanish manufacturer made Revolution, a smartphone that can boot either in Android or Boot2Gecko, a renamed version of Mozilla’s mobile OS. While the latter will surely be expensive, Peak+ and the other Firefox OS smartphones launched last year had a very attractive price, partly explained by its low-end specs. These days at MWC, Mozilla took things even further, showing off one of the most affordable smartphones ever, destined to be used in developing countries.

Jay Sullivan, COO of Mozilla, pointed out that “People in Latin America and Eastern Europe have eagerly upgraded from their feature phones to Firefox OS smartphones and now have rich access to the web and apps. Sales have far exceeded our targets. But 2013 was just the beginning.” I wish Mr. Sullivan was more specific as to what countries have just made the transition from feature phones to smartphones, as I happen to be from Romania, an Eastern European country where flagships such as Nexus 5, SGS4 and iPhone 5S are not exactly a rarity.

Sullivan explained that “In 2014, we are differentiating our user experience and our partners are growing the portfolio of devices. We are also enabling a whole new category of smartphone, priced around $25, that will bring even more people around the world online.”

John Jackson, IDC’s VP of mobility research, stated that “In six short months, Firefox OS has more than established itself in the very markets it aimed to address. IDC expects year-on-year Firefox OS volumes will grow by a factor of six times in the smartphone category alone.”

Mozilla’s mobile operating system won’t become a threat to iOS or Android anytime soon, as the company focuses on low-end devices made for emerging markets. However, it’s great to see a bit of diversity, and hopefully, more manufacturers will embrace this OS, regardless if they’re big names or smaller tech companies. It definitely looks like it’s no longer exclusively Nokia’s duty to connect people, as plenty of companies – especially Chinese ones – offer affordable smartphones.

Geeksphone Unveils Dual-Boot Android and Boot2Gecko Smartphone

Geeksphone Revolution - Android and Firefox OS Dual-Boot

Revolution, the dual-boot smartphone made by Spanish manufacturer Geeksphone, will enable people to use either Boot2Gecko or Android, depending on their mood and preferences.

There’s no doubt that Geeksphone are doing their best to catch the eye of the entire world. Last year, they launched two smartphones running Firefox OS. While those didn’t particularly excel in technical specs, they were very affordable and they carried a novelty factor. More recently, Geeksphone partnered with Silent Circle to create Blackphone, a PrivatOS-running smartphone that keeps NSA at bay. Their Revolution project isn’t exactly new, but aside from the fact that it would run Android and Firefox OS, not much was known last year. On top of that, Geeksphone also revealed some of the features of this device.

Boot2Gecko by Mozilla is practically the same thing as Firefox OS. However, Geeksphone is not allowed to use the OS under that name, since it is reserved for OEMs that have contracts with carriers. In case people don’t like Boot2Gecko, they can replace it with any other community developed mobile OS. As for the Android side of this smartphone, there is no word on whether Revolution will run KitKat or an older version.

Some of the specs worth mentioning include a 4.7-inch qHD (540×960) IPS display, a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2560 CPU, 1GB of RAM, an 8 MP LED flash rear camera and a 2 MP front camera, 4GB of built-in storage (expandable by up to 32GB via a microSD card), and a 2,000 mAh battery. While none of these specs is mind-blowing, it’s great to see that Intel makes its way to more and more Android devices. In terms of connectivity, Geeksphone Revolution comes with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, Micro-USB and 3G.

Much like Nexus devices, Revolution will get regular updates via a 1-click OTA system. That’s a great relief, since many manufacturers forget about their consumers once their product hits the market. Geeksphone dual-boot smartphone is expected to be launched soon, but the company has yet to disclose its price. Still, anyone interested in this smartphone should subscribe to the company’s newsletter, on the official website. Hopefully, the company will get positive feedback for this device and will thus be encouraged to make better, more powerful dual-boot smartphones. A dual OS phone capable of competing against Samsung or HTC’s flagships would really be something!

Mozilla’s ‘Phone for Apps’ initiative hits phase two, lures devs into porting HTML5 apps to Firefox OS

Mozilla's 'Phone for Apps' initiative hits phase two, lures devs into porting HTML5 apps to Firefox OS

Firefox has certainly taken some pretty huge steps since Mozilla initially announced its "Phone for Apps" program back in May. Still, the browser maker knows there's a lot to be done before the mobile OS becomes more of a household entity. To help it achieve that, Mozilla's launching phase two of the "Phone for Apps" initiative, offering developers a Firefox OS device -- in this case the Geeksphone Keon -- in exchange for porting their HTML5 apps to the young platform. More specifically, this qualifies devs who have "already built and shipped an HTML5 web app and have the time now to port that app to the new Firefox OS." Is this you? Then here's what's left to do: click the source below to peruse the rest of the guidelines, fill out the application and, if you're amongst the chosen group, expect a confirmation to reach your inbox sometime thereafter.

ZTE Open smartphone with Firefox OS to be sold on eBay for $80

ZTE Open smartphone with Firefox OS to be sold on eBay for $80

Yes, the ZTE Open is hauling its laggy self to America by way of the manufacturer's eBay store. Early adopters who want to get a head start with Firefox OS, or regular buyers looking for a cheap device that can handle things like Nokia HERE maps and social networking integration, will be able to Buy It Now for $79.99 (or £59.99 in the eBay UK store). They'll receive the unlocked, global variant of the Open, which is "not optimized for specific networks," and they'll get it in the orange color scheme that will be exclusive to eBay. There's no sign of the fixed-price listing on the auction site as yet, and we're not sure exactly when it'll go live, but people are already bidding on an official-looking import from Hong Kong, for which the price currently stands at $51 including P&P.

Update: We originally reported that this phone would "exclusively" be available on eBay, but that's only half true -- it looks like the exclusivity solely applies to the orange-colored variant in the US, so we've fixed the article to reflect that.

Betting on Mozilla's mobile operating system? There's a good chance, then, that you're kicking around a Geeksphone, one of the few devices known for running Firefox OS. Owners of the company's Keon and Peak handsets can now manually upgrade their devices to Firefox 1.1, which -- according to enthusiasts on the Geeksphone forums and Twitter -- speeds up boot times, patches an assortment of bugs and tacks on minor navigational and display improvements. Naturally, users interested in trying the build will have to download and flash it themselves. Unsure how to proceed? Check out the Geeksphone forums link at the adjacent source link for tips.

T-Mobile Poland to ship Firefox OS-powered Alcatel One Touch Fire starting tomorrow

TMobile Poland to ship Firefox OSpowered Alcatel One Touch Fire starting tomorrow

We knew good and well it was coming, and now we've both a date and a launch partner to hone in on: that's "tomorrow" and "T-Mobile Poland," respectively. After going big (as opposed to home) at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, Mozilla has just announced that the Firefox OS-powered Alcatel One Touch Fire will ship tomorrow in Poland for 1 zloty (practically free, for those curious) in combination with "a very attractive tariff." Market launches in additional European countries will follow in the fall, with German handsets to be marketed via Deutsche Telekom's second brand congstar. DT's subsidiaries in Hungary (Magyar Telekom) and Greece (COSMOTE) will also initiate sales of the handset this fall, but pricing in those regions has yet to be revealed. As for word on a US release via Sprint? Still waiting, sadly.
