This Life-Size Bubo the Owl Figure from Clash of the Titans is Kraken Battle Ready

Everyone needs a faithful companion, and Perseus really lucked out in Clash of the Titans when Athena refused Zeus’s request to send the hero her own pet owl, instead offering a brass-and-iron version of Bubo she had Hephaestus construct. Sure the mechanical Bubo was clumsy, but he came through in the end, and I think we can all agree the end is the most important part to come through in.

Bubo is one of legendary visual effects creator Ray Harryhausen’s most beloved creatures, given life in the movie using Ray’s own ‘Dynamation’ form of stop-motion model animation. Available for pre-order from the BigBadToyStore for the godly sum of $250, this 30-cm Bubo replica was faithfully recreated from the model used in the movie. Unlike the model in the film, though, this Bubo is made of soft vinyl, featuring eight points of articulation for posing how you see fit. I see fit to pose him on my shoulder and pretend I’m a steampunk pirate. Yarrrrr!

Will I be buying one myself? Unfortunately, I don’t have the $250 required, but I will be crafting my own Bubo out of Progresso soup cans and parts I can scavenge from the hot water heater. Sure all the cold showers will suck this winter, but can you really put a price on owning your own poorly constructed mechanical owl friend?

Squid Game Funko Pop Figures Given the Green Light

With the phenomenal success of Netflix’s Squid Game, it was only a short matter of time until the inevitable tidal wave of merchandise hit shores. Well, now it’s here, and Funko is releasing six characters from the series in their Funko Pop! style figurines to rake in some of that money. It’s like Funko just broke open their own Squid Game piggy bank!

Available individually for $11 or as a $66 six character set from Entertainment Earth, the figures include Seong Gi-Hun (Player 456), Oh Il-nam (Player 001), Abdul Ali (Player 199), Kang Sae-byeok (Player 067), Cho Sang-Woo (Player 218), and a circle masked worker. Will they also release square and triangle masked workers and Front Man and VIP figures? If there’s money to be made, I can almost guarantee it.

Did you know Squid Game’s creator/director Hwang Dong-hyuk shopped around a script for a Squid Game movie for ten years before Netflix showed an interest in turning it into a series? Ten years! I wish I’d gotten ahold of it first. I mean, sure, it would have been filmed with next to no budget with sets made almost entirely from cardboard, but still, ketchup can pass for real blood if your camera is crappy enough.

Fools Paradise Lowfool Steel of League Figure: Mobile Scrum Gundam

Prolific designer toymaker Fools Paradise is releasing a beastly figure that sees a rugby player wearing parts of the RX-78-2 Gundam as protective gear. The figure is called Lowfool Steel of League Team 01-GD. Yep, the toymakers are saying it’s for a robot rugby league, despite the face mask. It’d be silly to draw the line there right?

The long name implies that there will be other figures in their league. I hope they plan on making a Super Robot Wars-style universe. Head to Fools Paradise’s blog starting on 06/28/21 to pre-order. There’s no word on price as of this writing, but based on Fools Paradise’s previous releases, this will likely cost more than $350 (USD).

The Visible Hutt Anatomical Jabba the Hutt Figure: Everybody Gangster Until the Scalpel Comes Out

I never thought that someone would be a hardcore fan of Jabba the Hutt, but once again I’ve been reminded that there are all kinds of people in this world. Toy designer and maker Mighty Jabba not only has various collectibles of the Star Wars mob boss, but he also painstakingly designed, printed, and sculpted an anatomical figure of the menacing slug.

Mighty Jabba calls his creation The Visible Hutt, a nod to the similarly named American educational figures that were released in 1959. He also does acknowledge the influence of the legendary Jason Freeny and his line of anatomical figures. But Mighty Jabba deserves a lot of credit himself since he designed the skeleton and “vague internal organs” himself.

Mighty Jabba said he’s going to make a small batch of the figure to sell. Keep an eye on his Instagram page for announcements and more photos of the figure, including this a sweet retro box.

Pop Up Parade Journey The Traveler Figure: All Heroes in One

Love collecting figures of superheroes? Well, this one’s practically all of ’em for the price – and space – of one. From Good Smile Company’s Pop Up Parade line comes The Traveler, the main character of one of my favorite video games of all time, Journey.

The figure measures about 7″ tall and has very clean sculpts and colors, including the details on our silent hero’s scarf. You can order the figure from Good Smile Company for $38 (USD). I gotta play this again on PC.

Life-size Baby Yoda Figure Is Ready to Play with Your Ship

There’s little question that Baby Yoda (aka “The Child”) is the most adorable character in the history of the entire Star Wars universe. This little dude walked on the scene, took one look at all of the ewoks, porgs, and roller-droids, and said “hold my beer.” Now, you can have your very own Baby Yoda to look up at you longingly with its big expressive eyes and horizontal green ears.

The guys at Sideshow teamed up with Legacy Effects to bring us this amazingly accurate, life-size version of The Child. The little dude measures 16.5″ tall, and looks exactly like his character in The Mandalorian. Every little detail is there, from the peach fuzz on his head to the subtle hues of his irises we barely noticed even on our big 4K screen.

The inquisitive figure comes swaddled in his furry brown coat, and holds a silver shift knob between his three-fingered hand, just like the one he plucked from Mando’s ship, the Razor Crest.

Priced at $350, the lifelike figure isn’t cheap, but that’s a far cry from the reported $5 million that it cost them to develop the puppet used on the Disney+ series. I’ve never spent that much on a collectible figure myself, but I’m prepared to drop that much to have Baby Yoda in my house. If you want Baby Yoda as much as I do, drop by Sideshow, and place your order today. He’s expected to start shipping this fall, sometime between August and October.
