Contemporary wood and concrete home in Poland smartly conceals a garage under a hillside

Nestled in a residential community in Poznań, Poland is a cleverly designed home called the Hilltop House. The Polish design studio mode:lina tried to incorporate the owner’s love for winter activities, automobiles, mountains, and creative architecture while designing the home. This led to the creation of a contemporary-style barn in a matte black color outfitted with a hidden garage in a hill completely surrounded by trees. Pretty neat, no?

The home is quite a unique one since a smartly concealed garage is connected to the home, to hold the family’s cars. The concrete garage has been artfully tucked away under a hillside that is enthralled with greenery, shrubs, and flowers. The hill was specially built by the studio to hide the garage, an office, and other technical parts of the house. This is some seriously clever designing and planning on the part of the studio, as it prevents the garage from becoming a complete eyesore, and retains the rather chic modern look of the home.

Nestled away on the peak of the hill, is a tinier pitched roof structure that holds the master bedroom of the home, amped with direct access to the slopes. The exterior of the home is masked in wood and concrete, accentuated by dark metal sheeting and huge glass panes. All the diverse components align together to create an exterior that is clean, inviting, and aesthetically pleasing. The interior of the home includes a double-height ceiling and an abundance of windows that lend the space an open and airy feel. The windows allow sunlight to continuously stream in, creating a sunny living space during the day.  The color palette of the exterior is extended to the interior as well with concrete floors, wooden elements, and black furniture.

The kitchen is rather minimal and highlighted entirely in black. A large open wood staircase is attached artfully to a wall, clad in vertical wooden planks, and is supported by black rods, that climbers can hold onto. The garage has been smartly equipped with a carjack, which allows the residents to work on their cars, in their own home.

An Office That’s Like Living Inside a Smartphone!

droids_roids_01

Droids on Roids is a team of programmers, so making their new office seem familiar made perfect sense to the designers at Mode:lina. Navigating the space is a lot like navigating the home screen on your phone! Icons placed on the black stripe that runs along the walls (that serves as a sort of status bar) as well as the doors serve as a visual code which allows employees and guests to identify the function of each space. Apart from looping in elements typical for mobile apps, the interior was also given yellow features, which together with lamps in a shape of a zig-zag located all across the office, correspond with the Droids On Roids lighting logo.

Because the team of programmers and other staff spend much more time together than just working, the new office is packed with places to eat, play and chill! The office’s corridors also feature islands with armchairs and special soundproof booths for moments when private time is necessary. There is even a nap room in a secluded area with a big yellow hammock and comfortable beds!

Open Yet Defined Architecture

If it looks only slightly “off”, thats because the Fence House is a cool, contemporary interpretation of a traditional style. Familiar in shape, yet unique in structure, it’s composed of two blocks with a sloping roof and an asymmetric garage cube. Though all structures are connected, it looks like two separate units. It’s this unique shape that was dictated by its function. Household members, parents and two children, wanted to live independently. The result was dividing it into two parts. A separate area on the first floor allows adults to enjoy tranquility while kids can go wild in their “own house”.

The ground floor is a common place for all inhabitants. There’s the unique kitchen extended into the garden and a large living room with mezzanine, reaching the attic. Perhaps the most unusual feature is the window in the hallway, which exhibits the owner’s unique car inside a graphite garage cube. As with the garage, window openings throughout allow you to look inside from one zone to another. Huge glazing connects the kitchen and the dining area with the garden and the surrounding forest.

An Office to Sing About

opera_01

Be forewarned – checking out Opera Software’s new office might make going to work a little harder today! The headquarters are located in Wroclaw, Poland known as “the city of one hundred bridges” and it was this theme that dictated the direction of the interior design which includes constructions in the shape of arch, grates as well as familiar colors.

The arrangement of the kitchenette is an abstract, but recognizable reference to the architectural icons of the city, such as the construction of Market Hall, Central Railway Station hall or Szczytnicki’s Park. Alternatively, meeting rooms are directly associated with computers and all things IT: there is an integrated circuit, fans and decor, which are made out of nearly one thousand old foppy disks and over two hundred keyboards!
