David Bowie: That Time He Was In A Video Game

David Bowie Omikiron The Nomad Soul 1

We have just lost one of the most legendary figures in rock music, the brilliant David Bowie at 69 years old. Luckily, his work will live on forever, even his curious work in the 1999 game Omikron.

2016 has started in the worst possible way. A few days into it and we’ve already had our first legendary rockstar passing away – after a long, hard battle against cancer, the famed musician, painter, producer and personiality David Bowie (best known for albums like The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Honky Dory, or Blackstar from a couple days ago) has left this mortal soil, and we miss him so much already. In his constant search for innovation, experimentation and building new ways of expression, Bowie did much more than just music, and for example was one of the main characters in the movie Labyrinth, had a hilarious cameo in Zoolander, and was even one of the main characters in a 1999 video game titles “Omikron: The Nomad Soul”, which was Quantic Dream and David Cage’s debut in the gaming world (the team behind Heavy Rain, Farenheit: Indigo Prophecy and Beyond: Two Souls).

Bowie was far from the only musician to ever appear in a video game (the fantastic Brutal Legend had like half of the heavy metal pantheon and that’s just one game!), but his role in Omikron: The Nomad Soul was special for appearing right at the end of the 90s, when representing someone’s face using polygons was still a challenge –  but as ever, David Bowie was way ahead of the curve. This Eidos video game came out in 1999 for PCs and in 2000 for DreamCast, and although none of the versions were a resounding success, it did earn kind of a cult following despite never making it to the PS2, the best selling console of all time, which was making its debut around that time. Just like with every Quantic Dream game, Omikron is a weird, disjointed experience, and while it plays mostly like an adventure game (not unlike Deus Ex), it also combines many other concepts, ideas and minigames.

In this game, players will control a character living in the city of Omikron, which is under control of a tyrannic artificial intelligence – all very dystopic. Bowie appears as the face and voice of a character named Boz, the leader of a group that exists inside the net and fights the system from within. As Quantic Dream loved collaborating with David Bowie so much, they also created a completely new character for him, the frontman of a rock band called “The Dreamers”, which plays some of his songs, and that can be found hosting shows throughout the game which the player can attend as easter eggs. The experience was so positive for Bowie that he reused many of the concepts, melodies and ideas for his 1999 album “Hours…”.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul wasn’t exactly a success, but was enough to launch David Cage’s career, along with the rest of his team’s. The game spent some time as a forgotten gem, unplayable on modern systems until the GOG.com rescued it from oblivion and released it as a digital version for PC. If you like Bowie and gaming, maybe playing this piece of history will help tou cope with the pain of losing such a legend, and if this game is just too weird for you, it’s still okay, for Google confirms that David Bowie is in every video game ever. See you soon, Black Star!

The Autonomous Cars And Drones By Ford At CES 2016

Ford CES 2016 Autonomous Cars

International technology fair CES 2016 brought us many new gadgets and products of all kinds, and now it’s Ford’s turn, who want to tell us about the future of cars. This is the future according to the American company, with connectivity, drones, and autonomous cars. Read all about it in this story!

World-renowned company Ford also had a lot to show during CES 2016 at Las Vegas, Nevada, where they announced all the new features coming to their cars, their new drones, and connectivity features coming to their products – all of which look very promising and interesting.

They had a keynote where they explained their vision, with their new connectivity features integrated and new software coming to their cars, such as the SmartDeviceLink which allows interaction between our favorite smartphone apps and the car through voice commands, so the driver never has to take his hands off of the steering wheel. FORD Sync creates a link between vehicles and smart homes, and allows the cars and specific devices to communicate so the user can turn devices on or off from their car. What’s more, many of their vehicles and drones use SYNC AppLink which benefits from these connectivity features to help when it comes to emergencies related to climatic catastrophes or accidents.

One of the most acclaimed features deals with the connection between vehicles and smarthomes. With this we refer to having the ability to use voice commands to control lightning, heater, security and many other features from our smart homes from the comfort of our car. An example of this would be, say, having the ability to program our garage once it detects we’re within certain distance of the door, and use light of our choosing to welcome the driver. Wouldn’t that be neat? Ford SYNC Connect along with 4G LTE technology allows to control doors, check fuel or find our exact parking location straight from our phone which are all quite useful features, especially for those of us that happen to forget exactly where in the parking lot we were.

Finally, Ford also told attendees about a future in which vehicles and drones can work together, particularly useful if our area has been affected by, say, an earthquake, tsunami or other natural catastrophes. This inspection system will be used by the United Nations to reach inaccessible areas, and the first vehicle capable of using this technology will be the Ford F-150.

In order to hasten the development of autonomous cars, Ford are currently producing three times as many proofs of concepts, and has just recently released some 30 Mondeo Hybrid in California, Michigan and Arizona among other areas to try them out. These vehicles use a sensor called PUCK which guarantees precision when it comes to 3D mapping a new area in real time.

Investigation and engineering vicepresident Ken Washington ended the presentation explaining how Ford are trying to bring the best from each area of their business together in order to increase the quality of life of everyone, and their consumer base above all.

CES 2016: Lenovo Introduce Products And Rename Motorola

YOGA-900S-in-Gold-Silver_Product-Family

Tablets, ultrabooks and portable gadgets – the revamp of the “Moto” brand was the main thing Lenovo had going for them at CES 2016. Read all about it in this story!

Lots of things happened at CES 2016, the biggest tech show in the entire world. Among all these happenings, Chinese giant Lenovo made it clear why they were one of the fastest growing business during the last few years, and why each of their products are so acclaimed and succesful around the globe. CES 2016 was the perfect platform to show their new catalog and impress users with their new technology, and that’s exactly what they did with many new laptops, tablets, smartphones and several other high-end devices that we are sure will be among the most desired gadgets for this 2016 that has just started.

Keeping in mind the several suggestions from their buyers (something the Chinese giant excels at), Lenovo updated the beloved X1 line, of which the X1 Carbon is the undisputed main star. This ultra thin notebook will have, in its upcoming revision, an incredibly powerful sixth generation Intel Skylake processor, a total weight of barely above one kilo (about 2.2 pounds) and a fingerprint reader, which is slowly becoming the default among high-end devices. It will be available starting this February, and it will cost some $1.299 USD – not bad for such a high-end device.

For the users who would instead have a more functional and adaptable device, the Lenovo team introduced the X1 Yoga, a computer which is really similar to the X1 Carbon but features a tactile screen, stylus, and a keyboard that can be rotated 360 degrees, turning it into a tablet too. The computer’s screen is a beautiful OLED surface with a 2560X1440 resolution, and will come out this month at $1449 USD, just a couple hundred above the X1 Carbon.

Both of these new devices will feature next gen i7 processors, up to 16 GB of RAM memory, a 1TB SSD hard drive, and 14 inches screens capable of full HD resolutions. These two models will have an alternative version called ThinkCentre X1 which measures 24 inches (that is basically a small TV!), an all-in-one monitor with USB C connectors and 4K technology that can recharge the laptop’s battery while using it as a screen at the same time, as if to start their own Lenovo ecosystem.

Still, the biggest and most resounding bit of news is that Lenovo will rename Motorola, recently after having bought it out from the Google team. The legendary phone creators are now going to work on devices named “Moto by Lenovo”. This might not be a huge change to some, but some of the more nostalgic users might end up missing the creator of the Startac, just like Nokia fans still can’t get over how Microsoft renamed the entire brand as Lumia, the flagships of the new Windows Phones.

CES 2016 Sony 1

Sony also had a keynote at CES 2016, where they announced all their upcoming gadgets, from the best of the best to entirely new products. Read all the news in this story!

Sony took part of CES 2016 where they introduced their line-up, projects and upcoming gadgets for the rest of the year. The big highlights were the new BRAVIA TVs, audio and video equipment, a new line of products, but also many more surprises. The main star of the keynote and Sony’s productions were the new 4K TVs in the BRAVIA line, along with the new products in the h,ear family of digital video and audio recording, and the announcement of the Life Space UX line.

The new products in the BRAVIA line are all centered around bringing a 4K resolution with HDR (High Dynamic Range), for better brightness and contrast and more clear images. This new line of TVs is called LCD BRAVIA 4K X93D and comes with the touted Slim Backlight Drive technology, which along the X-tended Dynamic Range PRO (which is in charge of the contrast) and TRILUMINOS visualization for an enhanced color gamma make up the perfect trifecta of ideal technology any 4K display should have.

Sony also announced their new Backlight Master Drive technology for better and increased brightness and contrast, to take full advantage of the HDR. This technology comes from an 85″ Inches prototype, which enhances the backlight precision along with a high density LED system for optimal picture quality. Finally, they also talked about ULTRA, a new app that allows users to get movies and series in HDR 4K straight to the TV.

The h.ear series will receive 3 new products: the h.ear Go, h.ear In Wireless and h.ear On Wireless NC. These are wireless devices meant to complement the wired headsets launched before them. Besides their Hi-Res offerings (this name refers to the high-resolution audio technology) the Extra Bass line of products will bring the new MDR-XB650BT headphones, the SRS-XB3 y SRS-XB2 wireless speakers, and the high-potency audio system GTK-XB7.

Digital imaging technology also had its moment in the spotlight as Sony announced their new cam recorders: FDR-AX53, HDR-CX675 y HDR-AS50R. They spoke of the first model as the most innovative of the trio, and discussed its capabilities to record in 4K. It can use the ZEISS function which allows a 20X optic zoom which along the Balanced Optical SteadyShot technology should eliminate shaky or blurry images in panoramic takes or close-ups.

Finally and to end things, Sony announced what the new Life Space UX line is all about. This new concept is focused on making a change to the way people interact with physical spaces, experimenting with entertainment. One of the first such gadgets will be the Glass Sound speaker, an organic crystal shaped like a tube, which is capable of filling any room with sound. The LED Bulb speaker will be similar to a regular lightbulb, which can ble plugged anywhere at home to reproduce music wirelessly. Finally, Sony will also release a portable projector of only 10 cubic centimeters, equipped with a battery and internal speakers. It is capable of projecting a 56 centimeter images in any kind of surface, to up to 2 meters of distance.

Hence Sony had a fantastic presentation, loaded with new products and announcements along with a lot of new technologies. Which one of these products are your favorites? Let us know all about it in the comments section.

PSN Is Back Online After January Downtine: #PSNDown

playstation-PSNDOWN

PlayStation users have had some issues connecting to Playstation Network PSN through early January but all systems are back now. PlayStation’s answer wasn’t clear or sufficient, but with the situation solved, now we can analyze what happened.

PlayStation Network resumed all operations the last 5th of January after several days with sporadic downtime and issues and a few hours of total interruption. All of this started a few days before Christmas, once a group of hackers announced through several message boards that they were planning attacks against PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, as it happens every year in these communities. The immediate answer from the Sony higher-ups was that they were “looking into the issues”, followed by total radio silence up until the first few hours of January 5th, when Shuhei Yoshida himself, president of SCE studios announced the problem was solved and users could play again, while offering apologies for the inconveniences.

PlayStation has kind of a rough story with this type of hacks when it comes to PlayStation Network, the system through which PlayStation users get to play online, connect with other players and buy games digitally. The most infamous case was the heavy security breach from 2011, which resulted on a  23 day cut of the service, along with the spread of user’s data such as login credentials or credit card data.

What does a gamer do in these situations? Apparently, play on PC, as it seems that while PSN was having problems, Steam achieved a new record of users logged in at the same time, with a peak of 12.332.000 simultaneous users when the previous peak last year had been of 9 millions. But, let’s be fair, it’s not like Steam didn’t have any issues this season, as a cache error made it possible for several users to log into other users account randomly. Valve themselves chose to not comment on the situation except to deny that it they were the targets of an organized attack and to ease the users explaining no one could shop or trade from these accounts.

Whatever the case may be, whether you’re using Playstation Network, Xbox Live or Steam, we recommend changing your passwords and to avoid saving credit card data on your consoles or computers. Happy gaming!

These TVs run on Tizen OS, through which users can access tons of movies, streaming services and games, but they also intantly recognize devices (video game consoles, blu-ray players, home theaters, or whatever) so they can adjust to these automatically, without users having to meddle with the settings.

After this segment, they discussed the future of their VR headset, the Gear VR, and their plan to produce cameras capable of recording in 360 degrees in order to create immersive experiences aimed to bring virtual reality to the masses, outside of the niche of enthusiasts and gamers.

The Internet of Things according to Samsung

Samsung introduced a new and spectacular fridge (seriously, this fridge stole the show) called the Family Hub Refrigerator, which helps families connect offering new ways to organize, shop, and buy food giving and receiving instructions through its 21.5 inches screen in Full HD LCD with a touchscreen. Among the things the Family Hub can do are included:

  • Food Handling: with three cameras located inside the fridge, anyone can check out the food inside from anywhere in the world through a smartphone app. What’s more, thanks to their association with MasterCard, Samsung will offer an online shopping service where you can order food from many different chains and retailers through the fridge’s interface (this service will only be available in the USA and South Korea as of now).
  • Family communication center: This fridge allow the family to write notes, take pictures and share a calendar or art from its touchscreen, so everyone can communicate without having to depend on paper and pens.

  • Internet of Things: Samsung are aiming to strengthen their ecosystem of interconnected products, and this fridge is a part of that. Users can control lights, unlock doors and more straight from the Family Hub, as long as the other products are compatible.
  • Connected entertainment: The Family Hub Refrigerator features a fantastic screen and set of speakers where users can stream their favorite TV shows, music, or any kind of media, which makes the kitchen feel more homely and bridge the gap between it and the livingroom.

Mobile productivity and premium wearables

In order to close their CES 2016 keynote, the Korean giant introduced the new Galaxy TabPro S, a new premium tablet with the best features from the Galaxy family as well as all of the perks of a Windows computer. It is designed to last and respond, and comes with a full keyboard and touchpad so users can pick how to control it. Despite this, the most interesting thing about it was its terrific 12″ inches Super AMOLED Display capable of Full HD Plus.

This tablet wasn’t the only thing they introduced on the last segment. There was also quite a bit on the Gear S2, a smartwatch that comes in platinum and rose gold variants with designs by Alessandro Mendini and Colombo. This new smartwatch by Samsung is the first one to offer Samsung Pay functionality, an alternative for your shopping which is making its debut in South Korea and the USA this 2016, and will receive expanded compatibility to many other devices.

Thanks to its innovative gadgets and interconection features, Samsung have proven why they are among the industry leaders, and why it’s more important looking towards the future than having nostalgia for the past.

CES 2016: Everything LG Introduced At Las Vegas

LG-Signature-CES-2016

Korean giant LG had their press conference at CES 2016 in Las Vegas, the world’s greatest technology show with new products. Read all the news here!

LG had a great showing at CES 2016 where they introduced the three pillars they would be focusing on throughout the year: cars, internet of things and home appliances. The presentation started with cars, or to be more precise, the gadgets you can add to them. LG are working on many new gadgets to make travelling safer and more fun. When it comes to security, they have external sensors that allow the detection of other vehicles in the short and long range in real time. On the other hand, they also designed an information center, a monitor that allows to see in 360° along with a GPS. What’s more, LG have confirmed to be working on engines and compressors too.

From cars they moved to the Internet of Things. LG are working with several companies to generate a continuous integration. An example of this is their collaboration with Google, and the promise of future devices they will produce together moving forward.

To end their presentation, LG introduced their new “Signature” home appliances. Through this line of products, LG wants to redefine what premium has come to mean, putting emphasis on products that evoke the senses. Among the new products, the big star is the OLED TV 4k by the name LG Signature G6. This is a minimalist TV with all the essentials, from integrated speakers, HDR, UHD, and Dolby Vision. This is the TV with the greatest color gamma ever created, using the same technology from The Martian and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The new OLED models come in 55”, 65” and 75”, and new LCDs.

When it comes to washing machines, LG took matters very seriously. The new Signature washing machines can be programmed with the controls placed on the glass door, they’re opened when the door is pushed, and have a better system to reduce vibration and noise. Furthermore, you can connect it to an app to read the different states in which the cycle is at.

LG also introduced an air purifier with a semi-permanent filter that lasts 10 year, but users can take out clean every once in a while, all with very intuitive controls. There was also a new fridge with a really cool feature: when the user taps the door, it displays the contents. It even has sensors so the door will open for us once we have to load it with the supermarket bags. Basically by putting the foot next to the sensor the door opens by itself, and it’s only activated by humans.

LG had a great beginning of the year with many new smartphones and new products that were introduced at CES. Let us know which ones are your favorites in the comments section!

iPhone 7 Plus: What Improvements Is Apple Bringing Forth?

iphone-7-features

One of the most awaited smartphones of the year, the iPhone 7 Plus: battery, storage, and even more raw power. Read all about it in this story!

Apple’s next brainchild, the iPhone 7, is one of the most awaited mobile devices for this year. This new beast will come with many new features and updates, among them increased storage space and a high-power battery.

We have been following the latest rumors about the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus for a while, and it seems they will come with many new ideas and new concepts. For starters, it might not even have a headphone jack, so it will be the thinnest iPhone yet. In its place, the iPhone 7 might feature just one USB Lightning port. When it comes to screen sizes, the normal version might feature a 4.7 inches one while the Plus would instead be around 5.5 inches – still, there are more surprises when it comes to these two smartphones.

The first bit of news hints that the storage capabilities might be greatly increased. These new smartphones will come with some 256 GB of internal memory, making the iPhone the smartphone with the biggest storage unit until now. The second huge bit of new is that the new iPhone’s autonomy will be greatly increased, featuring a 3100mAh battery on the iPhone 7 Plus, which represents a 12% increase when compared to the iPhone 6 Plus, its direct predecessor.

We don’t quite know whether the new iPhones will only feature these huge storage units only on the Plus version, or if it will also be available in the smaller editions. The rumor mill claims that Apple are finally going to stop production of all 16GB models favoring bigger sizes, pretty much offering the storage capabilities of a small hard drive in the palm of our hands.

When it comes to the battery, though, it would seem that Apple are still attempting to make slimmer, thinner phones which would in turn mean its autonomy would not be greatly increased and would likely stay about the same.

We have no doubts that the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be one of the most talked and discussed devices of the year, when it comes to smartphones, being the Plus version the clearly superior one for offering huge storage capabilities and a somewhat increased battery life in the Cupertino company’s history, yet, is this enough to sway you over? Let us know what you think on the comments section below.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Will Come In Two Sizes

Samsung-Galaxy-S7-1

It is not going to be long until we can enjoy Samsung’s next creation, the Galaxy S7, which will arrive in Q1 2015 in two variants. Read all the details in this story!

Samsung are working hard but keeping us expectant about the upcoming new member of the Galaxy family, the Samsung Galaxy S7. With many rumors about its specs, capabilities and features, it seems that we can finally confirm some information about its variants, and it is likely we will only be getting two, as opposed to its predecessor, the Galaxy S6.

The internet exploded in anticipation a few weeks ago when the first few rumors of the Samsung Galaxy S7 variants started popping up, and finally, thanks to a report from a South Korea media outlet, we can confirm at least two. Let us note that when it comes to the aesthetics, there won’t be any major changes when compared to the Galaxy S6, but what is under the hood is quite different, offering more horsepower thanks to its better processor and increase in RAM memory. Even though some rumors also mention a better camera with better sensors, the truth is in the end it might have less megapixels – but as any photograph enthusiast knows, this isn’t really indicative of its over-all quality.

At first, rumors claimed the Galaxy S7 would release in two version (Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge) with the possibility of a Plus version releasing in the future, but it seems this last version will never come to fruition and the only editions will be the standard one and the curved one. The original version will feature a 5.2 inches screen, while the cruved one will have a 5.7 inches one instead, similar to what we saw in the Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge Plus.

This strategy is very similar to what is happening with the last few Apple smartphones: the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which came out in two sizes (4.7 inches and 5.5 inches respectively). This way, users know what options they have from even before its release, and can already pick the size that works best for them.

Rumors indicate that Samsung is going to produce some 5 million units, at least initially, with 3.3 of them being Samsung Galaxy S7 while the remaining 1.7 are going to be Galaxy S7 Edge. This production cycle is scheduled for February of 2016, so insiders expect the new Galaxy phones to debut some time in March. It seems the new year will come with many new devices for the techies who are looking to update their smartphone experience, so all that is left is to wait and see how the Korean giant and its competitors will revolutionize the industry this time around.
