Apple music unveiled at WWDC 2015

Apple used their WWDC15 developer’s conference to announce the much teased Apple Music, the system with which they intend to compete with Spotify for streaming subscriptions.

For a while now rumors have been floating around of how Apple were preparing something related to the streaming of music, in order to compete with Spotify. Yet now it is official, and their new system Apple Music has been unveiled at the latest WWDC, in their “one more thing” segment. The new system was introduced by Tim Cook, who has been the visible face of the company ever since Steve Jobs passed away.

This service offers, at its core, the same as Spotify – yet this version is backed by the gigantic catalog of music and artists present on iTunes (with over 37 million songs), and it is scheduled to release on June 30th in over 100 countries under two subscription models. There will be a three month free trial for iTuens users, at that. The first option costs $9.99 USD for a single user, but if someone wanted to share their subscription with their family, they can use up to 6 active accounts for $14.99 USD. The big bit of news, though, this is not restricted to PC, Mac and iOS, but will be officially released for Android platforms by the end of the year.

Users will not only be able to listen to the entire iTunes catalog online and via streaming, but will also be able to download those songs they enjoy, to listen to them offline. There will be a section called “For You” where users will get recommendations based not only on what our friends are listening to but also by expert curators that made the call instead of algorithms.

Apple Music will also have the option to play a huge catalog of music videos in HD that already exist in iTunes, on top of the company’s official radio services.Furthermore, there’s many, many podcasts users around the world can download and listen to as well as a new station called Beats One, which will transmit 24/7 from Los Angeles, New York and London with live hosts and DJs.

To top it all off, the system will make use of the Connect platform which allows users to follow their favorite artists and interact with them in a platform that looks like a mixture of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram – all from the very same iTunes. Apple announces new OS X El Capitan

Just like every year, Apple did their WWDC presentation today. The big news coming from it were the new OS X iteration, this time titled “El Capitan”.

Apple have a new OS underway, freshly announced at their WWDC 2015 conference, their big annual event for developers. This new OS X follows the same naming convention as Yosemite, and instead of being named after big felines it has the denomination of some big formations from California, in this case a big vertical formation inside the Yosemite National Park. Along with this new version we’re getting several improvements but few changes, as this newOS is aimed towards refining stability and improving its looks rather than getting new features and major changes out there. For example, one of the big changes is replacing the traditional Helvetica Neue for Apple Watch’s San Francisco typeface, a new font designed internally which will subtly affect the general look of the OS.

According to Apple’s vicepresident Craig Federighi, the core of the experience is making El Capitan “more expressive. These new changes include subtle improvements in the interface to switch in between apps, or features such as shaking the mouse so the pointer will momentarily grow and you never lose it. Another interesting change is that Safari will now have pinned sites, which will remain on the tabs and load automatically for users, as well as signals that indicate which windows are emitting sound so users can close or mute them with a simple gesture.

With the new OS X, the focus is also on performance. El Capitan loads 1.4 times faster that its predecessor Yosemite, with reduced memory consumption too. Federighi also talked about a new technology called Metal for Mac, which allows a direct connection in between the hardware and GPU to hasten some processes. Thanks to this, the performance of 3d related functionalities (be it gaming or design, for example) will be accelerated “up to ten times”.

El Capitan will be available for developers as soon as the conference is over, and will roll out to users as a fall update.

Apple’s WWDC 2014: What You Need To Know

Apple did their WWDC 2014 keynote today, that is their conference where they employ to present their software and hardware news. This year in particular there was no revolution waiting to happen, but lots of building up on their existing platforms and goodwill. There is a new iOS version, the eight one, for iPhone y iPad, but people were mostly excited about the possibility of an iWatch. Sadly, those news never came.

Apple spent the first portion of their keynote talking about their current and past success, with numbers to back it up. They talked about the massive attach rate for their latest OS, Mavericks, in comparison to Microsoft’s Windows 8, while confirming that the new entry in the series will be called Yosemite. This is following the latest Apple tradition, of calling their OS’s after Californian locations instead of great felines. Yosemite will come out after summer, and it will be free. Also, they confirmed we will be getting a new iteration of the Safari browser, faster and more compatible than ever.

Apple announced a new service called iCloud Drive, meant to become a direct competitor to Dropbox and Google Drive. This new service will work on Windows too, and offers 5 GB for free. We’re thinking maybe a future announcement will confirm a bigger capacity if users are willing to pay.

Apple have gotten ambitious, and they’re talking of better interaction between their gadgets and computers, so users can begin work in one and continue in the other, or even pick up phone calls from the new iMacs by syncing them with an iPhone.

All in all, Apple did what was expected of them, and being that we’re so used to them causing a revolution all the time, this leaves us thinking that it wasn’t all that good of a conference. They keep building on lifestyle, and improving, but this is not a revolution like some of us were led to believe.
