KEF M500 Headphone Review: Lookin’ Good, Feelin’ Good and Soundin’ Good

If you’re in the market for some high quality headphones, and also want something with a cool, modern style, you might want to check out the KEF M500 headphones. I recently had the opportunity to put these to the test, and would like to share my experiences.

For starters, the M500 headphones are quite good looking. In fact, they won a 2013 RedDot Design Award. They offer a modern, minimal design, with oval-shaped ear cups which aren’t too big or too small. The ear cups are covered with a soft, perforated leatherette material and offer comfortable memory foam padding underneath. Both cups have swivel hinges for optimal positioning on your ears, and so they can fold for storage. The headband and frame of the earcups are made from sandblasted aluminum alloy, making them lightweight and durable, and adding to their good looks.

The headphones ship with a nice padded case that has enough space for the headphones when folded up, along with accessories, including a standard audio-only cable and a stylish phone control cable with a built-in microphone, both detachable, of course.

One thing to note is that the cables are flat ribbon-style variety, which means they don’t tangle easily, though they take up a little more space than skinny cords. A right-angle, gold-plated connector on the end of each cable fits neatly in just about every gadget with a 3.5mm audio jack.

In my audio tests, I could clearly distinguish sounds from 20Hz all the way up to 20 kHz, thanks to their 40mm neodymium drivers. KEF also claims their copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils help improve clarity and detail. Audio fidelity is very clean and pleasing to the ear, without overly shrill highs or boomy bass.

This makes them great for audio junkies looking for natural sound – not artificially accentuated like many other headphones. I threw a wide variety of music and sound styles at them, and found them to work well with most types of audio. They deftly handled everything from the tight electronic beats and claps of Atoms for Peace’s Judge Jury and Executioner to the bright horns and wispy flute of Quincy Jones’ Soul Bossa Nova to the clacky cowbell of Donald Fagen’s New Frontier, to the soul-stirring, fragile vocals of Sia’s Breathe Me. Yes, I have a diverse audio collection. So?

I did find that I had to drive the M500s at a slightly higher volume level than other headphones for some reason, but I was still able to get more than enough volume at the high end of the volume range, and without distortion. I found the M500s to be extremely comfortable, even after long periods of wear, and while they do a good job blocking out external sounds, they don’t overly exert pressure on your head while wearing them.

My overall take on the KEF M500 headphones is very positive. With their modern minimal style and comfort, they’re a welcome change from some of the more over-the-top designs found in today’s high-end headphones. They produce clean and natural sound and do a good job exposing the subtleties in a wide variety of musical genres.

KEF X300AW Wireless PC Speakers Aimed at Well-Heeled Audiophiles

I don’t have an audiophile grade bone in my body. As long as there’s bass and I can understand the words in songs and in my favorite movies, I really don’t care what my speakers sound like. There are many people out there who are audiophiles and have ears good enough to hear the difference between cheap speakers and good speakers. If you can really discern the difference between high-quality sound and normal sound you’ll appreciate the KEF X300AW Wireless speakers.

The speakers are based on the well-reviewed X300A, and have two class AB amplifiers inside each one. A 50-watt amplifier drives the midrange and low end sound, while a 20-watt amp handles high frequencies for best sound quality overall. Their 802.11 b/g wireless capability allows the speakers to support streaming from mobile devices that are Airplay or DLNA compatible.

The speakers are also designed to connect directly to your Windows or Mac computer using a USB cable. When connected via USB the speakers support 96 kHz/24-bit HD audio and have a built-in digital analog converter. The manufacturer also equips the speakers with a 3.5 mm analog input. They’re available in either gunmetal or white cabinets.

If you think these sound like the speakers for you, get a load of the price. The speakers are available for $999.99(USD), which is a whole lot of cash for computer speakers. If you don’t need the wireless capability, the X300A speakers can be had for $200 less.

KEF M500 and M200 headphones launched in Hong Kong, we go ears-on

Image

It's been almost a month since KEF announced its first headphone series, and yesterday we finally got the chance to try out its M500 cans and M200 in-ears at the company's Hong Kong launch event. In fact, it's worth noting that while KEF originated from the UK 52 years ago, it's been part of Hong Kong's Gold Peak Group since 1992. That said, much of KEF's R&D is still done back in an English county called Kent, where the engineers attempted to port their company's sonic signature over to its M series headphones. The result? Let's just say we prefer one to the other.

KEF introduces M Series headphones bred from HiFi speaker know-how (updated)

DNP

Mostly known for its extravagant speaker systems, KEF is finally taking a whack at ear gear. Today, the company announced two new types of HiFi headphones, known as the M Series, which include a pair of on-ear cups (M500) and a set of in-ear buds (M200). Priced at $300, the M500 sports a full aluminum frame and sweat resistant padding, along with a 10mm driver for lows and a 5.5mm driver for mids and highs full-range 40mm neodymium driver in each earcup. If enclosed head gear isn't your thing, the $200 M200 offers an aluminum housing and a pair of silicone ear tips with an adjustable arm for improved comfort. Like their pricier sibling These earphones feature a 'DDD' dual dynamic driver system with a 10mm driver for lows and a 5.5mm driver for mids and highs. While we've yet to spend time with the M500 or M200, their press pictures and specs aren't too shabby. Call it a hunch, but we doubt they'll need any celebrity endorsements.
