A wall light that’s out of this world!

A child’s imagination is a powerful thing, so why not encourage this by surrounding them with sources of inspiration? The Mystic lamp carries a witty and characterful form that looks right at home within the playful surroundings of a child’s playroom. The quirky UFO gives the child an entirely new world to explore, where their imagination leads to limitless creating! The lighting emits as an eerie beam that gently illuminates the room! Operation is a simple as flicking a switch; a button located on the underside of the device makes the battery-operated light a breeze to turn on and off!

Is this a sink or a sculpture?

The inspiration for a product’s form can come from anywhere, this leads to beautifully unique and strikingly elegant forms that demand our attention, to be created. That’s exactly what the AVID sink achieves, as its form encourages the viewer to touch, caress and explore its form, right from the first moment their eyes make contact with it! Inspired by the deformation of a plush surface when we apply pressure with our fingers, the organic indent forms the vessel for the water to be held within!

You’d struggle to find a sink that carries a sculpture-like form anywhere near as elegant as this!

Restoring Apple’s iconic design language to the iPhone 11

Despite the undeniably powerful photographic capabilities that the newly released family of iPhones has brought with them, we can’t help but miss the iconically minimal and design that its ancestors were famed for carrying! This case aims to restore some of this clean design language, whilst simultaneously offering a welcomed level of protection!

On the reverse of the case is a metal cover that conceals the mind-boggling cameras; the gentle and smooth slide of this component not only reveals the lenses, but using the case’s embedded NFC technology, it automictically turns on the camera. This considered operation leads to a beautifully simplistic user experience!

Shred paper in style

We love to see a design that challenges the visual norm that we have become familiar with, and that is certainly what this concept does! At first glance you would be forgiven if you were left wondering what its functionality is, but on further inspection its paper-shredding abilities become evident! The appropriately named ‘Doughnut’ paper shredder isn’t just shaped the way-it is for the sake of aesthetics, it uses its bold and friendly form to elevate its functionality; the curvaceous top protects the user’s fingers from the vicious blades that are concealed within, whilst also guiding the paper into the correct position.

What makes this example of industrial design so desirable is its ability to work in both the domestic and professional environment; as opposed to carrying an unappealing and visually geometric aesthetic that can jar with the décor of a home, it instead blends in and becomes one with its surroundings!

Designer: Jaekyu Jung

“It’s completely safe to use for anyone. A shape of the doughnut top it can protect your fingers from the shredder blades inside,” Jung told Yanko Design.

A loud speaker with an aesthetic to match!

Whilst it might be its strikingly unique aesthetic that initially grabs your attention, the NOTA speaker greatly considered functionality that will get you hooked! Designed with versatility firmly in mind, NOTA uses its boldly selected shape to allow it to be used within both the domestic and outdoor environment! The wildly distinctive pattern that covers the vast majority of the speaker’s surface area, just asks to be touch; the tactile nature and extreme texture is one that you are either going to love or loathe… we certainly love it!

When it comes to speakers, shop shelves certainly aren’t at a shortage of offerings, therefore the shelf appeal of the packaging can go a long way in determining the success of the product. It’s fair to say that NOTA passes with flying colors in the packaging department; the frosted acrylic shell hints at the product inside, lettings its vibrant color do the talking!

The bench with a hidden secret

Gravità is quite possibly the perfect example of highly flexible outdoor furniture. Whilst its aesthetic doesn’t scream out for attention, its design holds a beautiful method of construction that creates a humble feature! The uniquely engineered mechanism eliminates the need for screws, leading to an undeniably clean aesthetic that we can’t help but love!

There is now no excuse for an untidy desk!

Whist handheld vacuum cleaners may be compact in size compared to their full-sized counterparts, they are still far from being portable. This leads to them living a life exclusively within the home, which is odd when you think about how much time many of us spend away from our homes and instead sit at our desks! MUGG has been designed with the aim of keeping our desks dust-free, whilst remaining compact enough to fit comfortably within our bags.

It was only appropriate that a device that’s sole purpose is to keep our work environment clean, to carry an equally clean design; the white, matt finish beautifully emphasizes the gentle curves that make up its distinctive profile. To complement the hand-held device, a charging station has also been designed to complete this desirable proposal!

Designer: Dae Hun Kim

“Society has recently created a new market target called the “Deskterian,” and many dinning or desk electronics products are on the market for people who like to decorate their desks. But you spend the most of your day at your desk, easily exposed to the threat of each species of bacteria, germs, mites, and fine dust. It is also important to note the possibility of a safety accident on the desk due to the ‘tracking’ phenomenon, which increases the risk of fire due to dust generated during electronic operation,” Kim told Yanko Design.

“The ‘MUGG’ has a simple minimal vacuum cleaner structure and a brush that can be cleaned even in the event of power failure, protecting your health and safety.”

“The basic material of the product is ABS plastic, and the brush is elastomer. Use a C-type rechargeable battery, which can be used without the use of a brush as desired. If the brush is not fitted, it can be cleaned with higher suction power. The product consists of a small vacuum cleaner and a C-type charger. In case of a C-type charger, a smartphone wireless charging function is also possible when the vacuum cleaner is not used.”

Lucky Black Cat is IoT enabled and controls your home

Pets make for excellent company and communicating with them is a great solution to loneliness. But for some, the option for having a pet just isn’t there as the responsibility that comes with them simply doesn’t fit in with their busy day-to-day lives.

There is a plethora of Smart Hubs are on the market, but the Black Cat stands out from these as it ditches the futuristic and rigid design that these carry, and instead combines the elements of a familiar pet with Apple’s minimalist sensibility.

Black Cat not only acts as a rather hassle-free companion that’s ready to greet the user when they return home but also offers the capability of controlling the electronic devices within it. By connecting Black Cat to other smart devices, the user is able to answer their phone, check their schedule, operate the lights, etc. without leaving their digital companion’s side!

Designers: Jungho Lee & YoungWoo Jeong

Structure & CMF

“We used a matte black texture like a black cat that looks at the user from a distance but sometimes comes close and sympathetic. Also, it can be a natural harmony with space by using natural curve of the product,” Lee told Yanko Design.

Smart Home Controlling

By connecting with other smart devices, Black cat controls them with user’ information received from the other devices. People can answer the phone, check their schedule, and turn on and off the light and home appliances. This AI-based controller enables people to interact with home appliances as communicating with real pets.

Collaboration with Apple

They started the project with the idea ‘What if Apple made a smart device that shaped Siri?’ So, they added an image of a black cat, like Apple’s chic image, to a smart device and added friendliness.

Communicate with your Black Cat

They designed a friendly-looking IoT product that resembled a cat. As an example of IoT, they designed the concept using Siri A.I. system.
