Flip the Secret Box over to hide your valuables!

Always one to make interesting, interactive designs that require a hands-on approach and a wow factor, you may remember Marc Venot’s Quetzal Lamp and Chair series. The Secret Box, a design developed for French design brand Lexon, involves a similar, playful approach that baffles you with a simple trick that involves a simple 180° flip.

The Secret Box allows you to stash valuables in a transparent acrylic jar. Flip the jar over, and it goes from transparent to completely opaque, hiding your items from one’s view. A clever trick, the Secret Box uses an opaque, milky liquid trapped within a double-walled container. When the container’s kept upright, the liquid sits at the base of the jar, while the walls remain transparent. Flip the jar over and the liquid exits the base and fills up the walls, blocking what’s inside the jar from your view. Anyone unfamiliar with the box’s little secret will probably think the box contains a liquid inside it. Tip the box back over and the liquid collects at the base again, revealing the items you hid inside it in the first place. The Secret Box is perfect for stashing things you don’t want other people getting their hands on. From loose change, to cookies or candy, the Secret Box is an inventive little product that hides your valuables from the rest of the world… but not you! Only you know the clever little secret!

The lamp that’s de-light-ful

quetzal_lamp_1

Following the lines of the highly interactive and endlessly entertaining Quetzal Chair is the Quetzal Lamp, a light that invites you to interact with it… almost like a fidget toy of sorts. The Quetzal Lamp takes inspiration from the South American Quetzal bird’s plumage. Just like in the chair, the lamp comes with dual-colored individual paper members that can be fanned out or inwards in either clockwise or anti-clockwise directions. The double colored members end up allowing you to dim the light when closed completely, and when opened out, cast a beautiful pattern of light against the walls and the floor.

The entire lamp comprises a simple base, two mounting rings, and a set of 30 dual-colored Arjowiggins heavy-weight textured paper fins. Easy to assemble, and delightful to interact with, the Quetzal Lamp is the kind that brightens not just the room, but your life too!

A chair with flair!

quetzal_chair_1

You could say that I’m a ‘fan’ of chairs like this! The Quetzal chair designed by Marc Venot for Missana comes in a flowery design with multiple pillows that fan outwards, resembling its inspiration, the Quetzal bird’s plumage. What’s interesting is the ability to flip over the pillows to change the color of the chair entirely, making it a chair that transcends traditional static furniture and the kind that can adapt to any interior setting.

Made from 14 bi-colored pillows with color combinations carefully hand-picked to present a harmonious composition no matter what the arrangement, the Quetzal chair puts fun into furniture, by not just being the kind of chair you’d immediately notice from a distance, it also is interactive, causing you to not just admire it from a distance, but want to experience it first-hand!
