Laser-cut Orrery Puts the Earth, Sun, and Moon on Your Desktop

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “orrery,” it’s one of several words used to describe a mechanical contraption that simulates the orbit of planets, moons, and stars. Some variants are also known as a “tellurium” or a “loxocosm,” all of which are harder to pronounce than “planet machine.”

Basically, these machines demonstrate the relationship between planetary orbits and speeds by using a complex series of gears. Over the years, orreries have turned up in clocks, watches, and interactive sculptures, and now you can make your own with this flat-pack kit I spotted over on Etsy.

The Dreipunkt Tellurium kit comes with everything you need to track the positions of the Sun, Moon, and Earth, as they turn in orbit throughout the year. In all, there are more than 60 pieces in the model, which also includes wood glue, and an assembly manual with both German and English instructions.

You can grab one of these cool desktop playthings over on Laserdeko’s Etsy Shop for about $110.

NASA’s closest-ever Sun flybys reveal how solar wind works

As promised, NASA has presented the first results from the Parker Solar Probe -- and they're already providing a treasure trove of insights regarding the Sun. Most notably, the solar wind doesn't behave entirely like scientists expected. There are fl...

NASA renames Kuiper Belt object following controversy

NASA's nickname for the distant Kuiper Belt object 2014 MU69, Ultima Thule, has been more than a little contentious. While it has innocuous meanings, Ultima Thule is also the term white supremacists use to refer to a mythical homeland. The agency i...

Wear the Solar System on Your Wrist

In Men in Black, it turned out that Orion the cat held the entire universe on his collar. While it’s not quite as impressive as carrying the universe, you can carry the solar system on your wrist. You’ll just need to pretend that your arm is the Sun, so the planets have something to orbit around.

This solar system bracelet is made up of polished gemstones that have been selected for their similarity in color and pattern to our neighboring planets. It’s supposed to help with your Chakras or something too, but I prefer to stick to the scientific interpretation of things.

Despite the diagram above, the bracelet includes all nine planets (including Pluto) and the moon. Of course, they’re not to scale, as that would be one uncomfortable bracelet if you had to lug around Jupiter all day long. The remaining stones are black with star-like speckles, representing the vastness of space.

You can grab this spacely bracelet over on Amazon for just $10.

European astronauts plan to take pics of a comet from the dawn of time

The European Space Agency (ESA) hopes to photograph a yet-to-be-discovered comet as it approaches Earth's orbit for the first time. To do so, it's developing "Comet Interceptor," a composite made of three individual spacecraft, which will separate to...

Ultima Thule is unlike anything we’ve seen in the solar system

It turns out Ultima Thule is a kind of lumpy space snowman. If you've been following NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, you know Ultima Thule is an object in Kuiper Belt, the donut-shaped region of icy bodies beyond Pluto. New Horizons made the farthest...

The Entire Solar System Fits In This Tiny Jar

Granted, the scale is 1:5billion, but you get the idea. It’s a wonderful little product from Etsy shop LittlePlanetFactory whose owner, George, is a little overwhelmed at the moment since his gig went viral and now everyone wants a solar system in a jar. We can understand why. Just look at those cute planets. You’re not supposed to actually do anything with them, other than admire them and get some respect and perspective about our place in the universe. Given that the asking price is $37, we think it’s not only priced just right, but would be a shame not to get for anyone even slightly scientifically inclined. Or anyone with any respect for anything besides beer and wings.

This Space Cake Makes You a Devourer of Worlds

Ground control to Betty Crocker, this space cake looks delicious. My God, it’s full of stars! Well, planets anyway. This colorful cake was made by an Imgur contributor going by the name “pedagiggle” for a kid’s party, and it’s a masterpiece of nerd baking.

Its baker wanted to convey the idea of outer space inside the cake as well as the decorated outside. Obviously he or she did an amazing job with that solar system on the interior. A solar system! In a cake! Apparently, the trick was to bake cake pop orbs first, then embedding them in a marble cake with food coloring.

The baker posted additional photos and some instructions if you want to try to bake a planetary cake yourself. There were also some rocket ship and Star Wars cookies at the party. Why do I never get invited to these things?
