Yanko Design Top 50 – Best of 2013

If we reflect upon the trends predicted for 2013, then some of the prophecies have come true. For example, Contextual Design is no longer a buzzword and neither is it just restricted to user application. With research tools at their easy disposal, a consumer is no longer taken in by marketing ploys. Authenticity in the design, value, emotional context and above all simplicity; designs that reflect these core ethics have made their place in the free market.

As the judge of the red dot awards: design concept last year, these predicted trends were evident in the projects that were presented to the jury. Function and not frivolous design, materials that matter and emotional attachments, is what we were seeking last year.

2013 was a year that saw designers like Jony Ive takeover more than their fair share in designing, showing us that we need to push ourselves beyond our perceived limits. It’s another story that the iPhone 5S did little to inspire or aspire. However the ‘flat design’ of the iOS 7 did make its mark and sparked a spate of copies.

The slate for 2014 like a sheet of driven snow – totally blank! How you plan to fill these blank sheets of 365 days is up to you, all I can say is that last year’s trends belong to last year; this new year awaits a fresh new voice. Empower yourself with this knowledge and go ahead and make that difference… 2014 is waiting for your sparkle, so go ahead and shine!

Happy New Year!

12 Inspirational and Exclusive Interviews on Yanko Design – Dr. Prof. Peter Zec (Part II)

As we close into Christmas and get ready for the holidays, it seems the perfect time to take a step back and reflect on how the year has passed by. Did we learn any lessons; could we have done anything differently and more importantly, how do we utilize the knowledge that we have gained through the year. While you ponder these thoughts, let’s add the Panama Story to our list. As promised, here is the second installment to Dr. Prof. Peter Zec’s interview conducted in Essen earlier this year.

The wealth of knowledge that has been amassed by Dr. Zec is easily translated and understood by listening to this simple children’s story. No wonder he always narrates it to his students. This special podcast allows you to hear the story in totality and Dr. Zec’s narrative is very easy to understand and follow.

Moving on, I have broken down the interview into two sections and this one addresses issues like Innovation vs Being Different and how important it is for a designer to understand that design is a service for a client. Only when we understand the difference between art and design, can we apply the business angle to this industry.

As we know Dr. Zec is associated with red dot and is the main driving force behind the awards. I have seen him do his bit for the industry up close and one of the initiatives that he co-created is the red dot young professional’s entry slot. Basically 50 designers who have obtained their academic qualifications within the past five years, have the chance to apply for one out of 50 free registrations to the “red dot award: product design 2013”. Any designer worth his profession knows how coveted the red dot product design award is, and this platform encourages young talent to get the edge just as they embark upon their designing career. Good thing is that the application for this freebie is tomorrow 18th December 2012. Details for the same can be found here. Good Luck!

Previous interviews in this series:

Hideshi Hamaguchi, Yves Béhar, Karim Rashid, Scott Wilson, Robert Brunner

TouchOfModern Gives Seven Reasons To Make You Smile

Traditionally, Indians don’t exchange sharp objects (like knives, forks etc.) as gifts because it’s a symbol of discord. However recently I was gifted a beautiful knife; the only difference was that there was an emotional story and message attached to the gift, making it impossible for me to do anything else but accept with humility, grace and honor. Such is the power of giving from the heart. This festive season TouchOfModern has a special lineup to make the art of giving as special as possible.

For the cook: Ceramic Onyx Set by Edge of Belgravia

These exclusively designed chef knives are a prime example of cutting-edge designing and performance. They certainly deserve a prime spot in kitchens across the globe.

For the techie: Elecom Orime Wireless Mouse by Elecom

Putting a captivating twist on your go-to electronics, the Elecom Orime Wireless Mouse is an absolute delight to work with.

For the music lover: MicroPod SE // Red Set Podspeakers by Scandyna

Piping out the most authentic sounds with impeccable quality, the Podspeakers are bound to impress the audiophile in your life.

For the fashionable: Uno 40 Black Date by Botta Design Quartz

The multi award-winning Botta Design have an exclusive Quartz watches collection. From this lineup we have here the Uno 40 Black Date, an amazingly fashionable watch that will appeal to the uber-chic person in your life.

For the one who likes to party: Kvad by Kul Designs

The Kvad lamp will appeal to those who like to party responsibly, without overworking our resources. Basically the illuminated pedestals are environmentally friendly and every process from manufacturing to shipping has been examined and tweaked to achieve the ultimate goal of a low carbon footprint.

For the art lover: There is Always Hope Balloon Girl by Banksy

Banksy is perhaps the most famous anonymous street artist known (or unknown) today. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humor with graffiti done in a distinctive stenciling technique. Such artistic works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.

For the entertainer: Madison by Anywhere Fireplaces

Emanating rich heat and nothing more, these surprisingly affordable fireplaces propose an inviting atmosphere, leaving out unnecessary soot, vents or gas lines. An ideal choice for those who like to entertain a whole lot!

The RoadShow Is Ready! Namaste Product Design Days

We gave a huge shout out to all ye designers that Product Design Days is coming up in November and that Yanko Design will be presenting the Yanko Design RoadShow. Well, November is here and we just wanted to update you that if you are in the vicinity of Chennai, then do drop in and see what an innovative exhibition and conference this event is.

I call it an innovative show simply because Product Design Days is the first of its kind exhibition and conference in India, where business houses and manufacturers are getting an insight to why streamlining a product designer into their business realm is an imperative move, especially if they want to sustain themselves in the long run. Essentially is the place where designers and design firms get to meet and explore options and forge new business liaisons with the other side of the spectrum.

This perspective ties in with what Yanko Design is all about, connecting designers with people from the industry and be that link that helps showcase talents.

The conference in conjunction with the exhibition will speak about theories, techniques and technologies of design and development. It will set the stage for cross pollination of ideas and best practices apart from sharing experiences, inspiration, knowledge and skills. Eminent speakers will be touching upon various topics and details can be found here.

And now for the pièce de résistance, participation for The RoadShow got an overwhelming response and we are proud to be representative for some really innovative designers, design firms and companies. Below is the list of cool folks that YD will be showcasing and representing.

I take this moment to give a shout-out to TouchOfModern – home for extraordinary design. Many thanks for everything!

Product Design Days is being held in Chennai India from the 22-23 November 2012. Be a part of the expo by attending the conference and visiting the exhibition to see cutting-edge, inspirational designs. See you there!
