K100 gives an extra set of eyes for the K9 Dog squad

Dog squads have been helping the police force for a long time now, however refinements in their functioning have not been very significant. Hoping to give this a boost is the K100, K9 Dog & Police Communication System by Lu Zheng and Pontus Edman

Essentially, this two-way device sets up a camera on the back of the canine and provides a live feed to the receiving display that is strapped onto the forearm of the K9 officer. It aims to give a better view of what the lead police dog is seeing, when it is in the forefront.

It also allows the trainer to communicate with the dog, which can be helpful in stressful situations.

Designers: Lu Zheng, Pontus Edman & in collaboration with FLIR.

Research

“When we visited the K9 Police force, it became clear that they had the interest and need for better equipment. Still using the whistle, paper maps, compasses supported by simple GPS-tools and com-radios,” Zheng told Yanko Design.

“Whistle works well over short distances but couldn’t be used over larger areas. The GPS-tool provides the live position of the dog, nothing more. They were talking about how to remove unnecessary processes in the workflow to give them the freedom and mobility they would need to execute their duties.”

Prototype

“We built over 20 prototypes with different materials to test the best way for the product to fit on user and dog. The prodoucts are compact and all element are integrated in the backpack and monitor on the arm. All parts were milled for 3D printed, 72 different parts come together and made the final prototype.”

Final – Police & K9 Dog Communication

The K100 is an office-to-dog solution that allows police office to see the position and a live camera feed of both natural and infrared imaging from the dogs perspective.

A stabilized camera unit is mounted on the dog. The unti also has vibrations control and voice-commmand speaker to give the office a certain communication with the dog in a free-running situation over larger areas.

The K9 office on the other hand carries a controller which all datas collected by unit on the dog are displayed.

Sunny tables and wall mounts brings shadow work into play

Only when you are looking to upgrade your furniture, that you come to appreciate the hard work that independent designers and design studios put in. You could go for mass-produced IKEA (and the likes), or exclusive, thought-provoking designs like the ‘Sunny’ metal furniture collection.

What the designer Dmitry Kozinenko has attempted to do here, is to give us a collection that has elements that mimic the ‘sharp shadows on a bright sunny day’, and hence the extended metal shadows to the collection. Clever!

This desk has an assistant desk stacked on top, to hold more stuff for you

I love the cheeky design of the DUOO 2.0 Desk, as it efficiently adds a tier of holding space, for you to utilize well. It’s like having a tray or box on top of your desk, to hold smaller items like your phone, pens, watch… the ‘not very critical’ items, and then elevating it a little, so that you can keep additional gear under it.

Aesthetically, it looks very classy and complements the overall look of the desk. The mix of dark wood and black metal frame, just adds to the chic feel of the desk. Aside from the elevated tray, the design also includes a convenient cubby built into the table top, to hold your cables and wires, and keep the desk clutter-free.

This complete pill-shaped object is actually a hairdryer

Form and function marry well in the conceptual BR555 portable hairdryer. Inspired by the Braun 550 series – from 1976 – the new-age BR555 is designed to fit in your travel case. The power of the Sirocco fan, used in its construction, is good enough to work noiselessly as well dry your hair efficiently.

The design is very fluid if you ask me, it can be used as a travel piece, but at the same time it can fit well into any bathroom or dressing table. I like the fact that it has a completely folding form, and giving the dryer a completely compact footprint and making it easy to store it.

Designer: Jaekyu Jung

“Hairdryer products have more time not to be used than when they are used, so we have been considering designs that can harmonize in space such as bathrooms and dressing rooms,” Jung told Yanko Design.

“This hairdryer adopts a Sirocco fan. The Sirocco fan makes less noise. It features storage and portability by applying a structure that rarely folds the steering wheel among the Sirocco type. Minimalistic intake pattern, expressing the beauty and space harmony as a beauty product.”

“I disassembled a couple of hairdryers to see how that works also how the internal structure looks like and designed for and then tried to make a 1:1 prototype model to check the scale. The 90° is cordless and is powered by Li-ion battery, the body is made of ABS plastic and has a high polished finish. Its foldable design reduces baggage space making it ideal for both traveling and everyday use.”

Expandable camper makes more room when you fit it into the home plan

What started as a thesis project, the 2030 Sustainable living in the countryside camper by Jude Fan, has the full potential to become a real thing. Basically what the designer has done is that he has played around with the interiors of the vehicle, to give us modular workspace, recreation space and viewing space. However, there are two panels on the side, that extend and thus expand the floor plan of the vehicle.

So picture this, you have this camper and use it for your next outing, but when you drive back home, you park it parallel to the structure, open up the two side panels. One of them extends to become a porch of sorts and the panel to the house extend and fits in the assigned space, and becomes a part of the home structure. The video below explains this really well.

The interiors of the vehicle are well planned, to make it the perfect mode of transport and hibernation pod.

Designer: Jude Fan

“My thesis project is about living in the countryside in 2030. The first and second industrial revolutions brought people to the city. Nowadays, living in a big city might be stressful due to bad air quality, high living cost and traffic jam. With the help of the third technology revolution, I believe there might be a chance for us to live a modern, connected life in the countryside again,” Fan told Yanko Design.

Pineapples – the secret sauce for Vegan Apple Watch Straps

In two lines, this is a Vegan Watch strap for your super cool Apple Watch. In elaborate terms, we are discussing how there is more use for Piñatex – a natural leather alternative that is made from pineapple leaves.

Many of you may be aware that the coconut tree is one such example, where all parts of it are used in some form or the other. For example, the leaves are woven into baskets, the husk of the coconut is used in the coir industry, whereas the fruit is consumed in totality – water, milk, pulp and oil!

Another such fruit is the pineapple. Piñatex is a natural leather alternative made from cellulose fibers extracted from pineapple leaves. Crafting an Apple Watch Strap – perhaps the World’s First pineapple strap!

The material is very ethical and sustainable, and makes for a great workaround for leather straps. What is very nice about its form, is that it looks great in all the different colors that the straps are available in. My favorite two are the Cheeky Silver and Paprika Red color option.

A Better Choice for a Better Future

Every year, the global leather industry slaughters more than a billion animals and about 13 million tonnes of waste from global pineapple agriculture every year.

Why Piñatex?

Piñatex is made from the leaves of the pineapple plant, the byproduct of the fruit industry, which are traditionally discarded or burned. Adding value to this waste has created a new source of income for farming communities who otherwise rely on a seasonal harvest. Once the fiber has been stripped from the leaf the leftover biomass is retained to use as a natural fertilizer or biofuel, offering a further economic prospect.

This iMac 2019 concept is better than what Cook announced

Philip Goolkasian has got it right, if we have to reimagine the new iMac, it may as well be his concept design that retains the familiar form, but packs in some good features. I’m completely sold on the idea of putting the display’s stand to good use. Integrating wireless charging for your iPhone, AirPods, TouchPad… both from the top and the side of the stand, is simply clever. The Apple Pencil charging spot is the best thought out! I am currently overwhelmed with the number of words that surround my workstation. These clever integrations are practical and much needed. Other than this, the computer includes a bezel-free display, multi-channel audio, third camera on the side and a harmonious design. FaceID, biometrics support, AR / VR compatibility and intuitive touch gestures are the cherry on the icing. New design team at Apple, hope you’re taking notes.

Designer: Philip Goolkasian

iMac 2019

iPad Pro and iPhone X unleased bezel-free displays. HomePod reimagined sound. Airpower and Apple Pencil showcased the full extent of wireless technology. This concept brings these aesthetic and tehcnological advanacments under one harmonious industrial design for iMac.

iMac with Multi-channel Surround Sound

HomePod’s breathable mesh panel is reimagined in iMac to dramatically improve passive ventiliation and decrease the space required for iMac’s fans. With the exra volume, a high-excursion woofer and beamforming tweeters emit studio-grade to deliver amazing sound.

New Spot. More Ports.

8 connected ports sit at the base of the design – putting cables our of sight and freeing more space for the speaker array. Power and SD are shited to iMac’s edge for easier access and continuity to iPad Pro.

Nothing but Screem

iMac’s design pushed the digital display to the very edge with the same bezel as iPad Pro. In addition to FaceID, the bezel is packed with additional sensors to support biometrics, intuitive touch gestures, and AR/VR.

More than a Black Border

In addition to Face ID, this design’s top bezel also supports side cameras at each corner – enabling more immersive security controls and precise AR/VR experiences.

Side-by-side Display

Use iMac’s default view window when consistency is paramount. Use iMac’s maximum pixel area for cinematic purposes and multi-monitor configurations.

Charging Where You Need It

iMac’s purposefully-designed edges and baseplate support wireless charging for Apple Pencil, AirPods, Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad and other wireless accessories.

When Typography moves from 2D to 3D, we get the Furnitype

What can I say about the Furnitype – it’s an expression of a designer and their love for typography and how it translates into design. The muse – typography is given a form and you can enjoy the playfulness of the curves and lines, when you align in a fashion to form symbols and a three-dimensional language of objects.

Designer: Marta Adamkowska

This project came about as a result of considerations on the relations between typography and the design of functional forms, particularly framework furniture. The project began with an analysis of both domains, viewing the one through the other, mapping their interconnections and contrasting their respective design processes. In turn, these explorations gave rise to a series of objects – chair sketches in empty space – regarded as a certain alphabet of design. An important aspect of the project is how it confronts the user. At that moment, a sign ceases to be an abstract symbol and becomes converted into an object, it adopts the properties of functional form and enters into a relationship with people,” Adamkowska told Yanko Design.

The Furnitype was also undertaken as means of advancing a perspective on the nature of design, on where its frontiers expand and overlap, as well as on how form is defined. The aim of the project was thus to transcribe the two-dimensional language of typography into the three-dimensional language of objects. Both letters and pieces of furniture are a collection of horizontal and vertical lines, and curves. In the Furnitype, the ways in which said lines are joined to form the formalised signs of written language have been conveyed in the spatial layout of framework furniture.”

Dry, sanitize, purify, and warm public washrooms with this device

Radryer is a radical concept that looks at combining three functionalities into one. You may argue that it’s not necessary to cramp three diverse functions into one, but if you ask me, they functions complement each other – so why not!

Radryer is a hand dryer and sterilizer, it is also an air purifier and a radiator. The combination makes complete sense in the bathroom or a public toilet. Would love to see this one materialize.

Designer: Jinyoung Noh

“Radiators that appear in the toilet every winter have nuts and holes that do not look good when not in use. I thought it would solve the aesthetic problem if the seasonal product could be combined with other toilet device’s problem,” Noh told Yanko Design.
