It was a stellar week for spheroids, both the physical and metaphorical varieties. NASA discovered seven new planets (three of which are habitable) just 40 light years away. Ants on golf balls are teaching scientists about insectoid navigation skills...
How much is societal behavior dictated by genetics? Scientists at Rockefeller University might just find out through ant colonies. They've modified the genes of clonal raider ants (not shown above) to see how the changes affect social behavior, bot...
Ants, which are famed for their highly developed work ethic, use the sun and memories of their surroundings to find the way home when they walk backward dragging a heavy load, scientists have found...
According to a new research study, ants can detect the way independent of their bodies’orientation. The research team did the research at Antoine Wystrach of the Research Centre on Animal Cognition (...

Stanford university's uBots have pulled off a feat that makes ants look like slackers. Working in concert, six of the robots managed to tow a 3,900 pound car, despite weighing just a half-ounce each -- much less than other car-towing robots. The secr...
Today on In Case You Missed It: Johns Hopkins University researchers surgically repositioned a patient's nerves and also implanted a prosthetic adapter to use mind control on his prosthetic arm. French researchers learned that common ants are able...
Scientists at the George Institute of Technology have discovered a material so versatile that it can form solid objects, bend under pressure without breaking, easily float on water and even disperse into a liquid when something tries to pass throug...
I find ants to be creepy. I mean, they aren’t as bad as spiders, but still, I would crush every one of them if I could. At least now I know how to make them march in a perfect circle and stay away from me. This video should be filed under the X-files and investigated by Mulder and Scully. It shows a colony of ants moving randomly around a working iPhone, but when the phone rings they suddenly begin marching in a perfect circle.
There’s no real consensus on what is causing this strange behavior, but it is very fascinating. All I know is that if I ever get in trouble with ants, I’ll be giving them a phone and keep calling them. That should keep them busy.
The second video is from 2010, and shows entomologist Sanford Porter explaining the phenomenon of “Ant Death Circles,” in which thousands of ants just follow each other in an endless circle. Weird.
