Top 10 Bicycles Designs That Are Comfortable, Convenient & Eco-Friendly For Your Daily Commute

In 2023, living more sustainably and consciously should be a priority for all of us, – whether it’s making changes in our daily lives, consumption, or even our means of transportation. Our typical fossil-fuel-consuming means of transportation need to be replaced by greener and more environment-friendly alternatives, and bicycles are an appealing option! Not only do they curb fuel consumption and reduce automotive emissions, but they’re also a healthy source of exercise for us! I mean, not only do we get to save the Earth from air pollution, but we can also get some intense cardio done. And, we’ve curated a whole range of innovative designs for you that caught our attention. From a “wheel-less” bicycle to a bicycle with triangle wheels – these impressive bicycles will surely convert you to Team Cycles!

1. The Wheelless Bike

US-based YouTuber The Q recently unveiled a mindboggling bicycle with NO wheels! The bicycle doesn’t have wheels, but it is equipped with rotating elements that ensure it moves forward. It features two sets of wheel belts that are mounted at absurd angles to produce extremely attention-gripping silhouettes. The Wheelless Bike works like a tank, with the bike and you being driven forward by the rotating wheel belts.

2. The Moccle

This super fun bicycle with a unique aesthetic is called the Moccle, and it focuses primarily on the enjoyment of riding. The bicycle doesn’t come with gears, a dashboard, or shock absorbers but features a bent-wood frame to achieve shock absorption. The bent plywood frame is held in place using a metal fixture, and the frame flexes in response to pressure, absorbing all stress from undulating surfaces or bad terrain.

3. IEDEX

Called the IEDEX, this electric bike is an exploration bicycle with ample storage space to hold your camping essentials without being a total eyesore. The e-bike has ad-hoc space to store two luggage bags in the frame itself! The bike skips the down tube courtesy of the unibody design, unlike typical bicycle designs.

4. Gordieiev’s Bicycle with Square Wheels

Sergii Gordieiev designed a bicycle with square wheels! What is really interesting to note is that the wheels on the bicycle don’t actually roll, but instead, the rubber on the conveyor belt-like platform rotates as you hit your foot on the pedal! If you want accurate representation – imagine a war tank moving on its metal tracks without any wheels, only it’s a bicycle, and the wheels are square-shaped!

5. Infinity All-Wheel Drive Bicycle

Stephan Henrich designed an innovative and uniquely shaped bicycle called the Infinity All-Wheel Drive Bicycle. It is one of the most out-of-the-box automotive designs I’ve seen in a while, and it moves forward with the help of a monotyre-clip chain system that creates a temporary rim in the wheel sections as well as a dental belt drive in the interior groove.

6. ADO Air 28

The new ADO Air 28 features a 250W/350W brushless hub motor that delivers the performance boost you need without making its presence heard. The Samsung Battery is disguised as a seat post and delivers an impressive range of up to 100 km in a subtle and stylish design. A smart torque sensor detects your pedaling with precision to determine how much boosting power you need.

7. Nireeka Mega eBike

The Nireeka Mega eBike is powered by the 1500W Bafang Ultra mid-drive with a peak torque of 200nm. The impressive vehicle can take you on speeds of up to 38mph and features a removable 840Wh extended battery that can easily help you reach a range of 51 miles on a single charge.

8. Gordieiev’s Bicycle with Triangle Wheels

Designed by Sergii Gordieiev, this innovative bicycle features triangle-shaped wheels! The ingenious bicycle riding on wheels with rollers moves in a linear manner, forming adjacent lines between each one of the rollers and the flat surface it’s riding on. This enables the triangle wheels to overcome their limitation and roll more comfortably than presumed.

9. Flluid-2 & Flluid-3

FUELL’s newest bikes provide some of the longest ranges in the market as well as comfort, safety, convenience and style.  With a full charge of its 2000W battery, the Flluid-2 can go for up to 225mi (350km), the longest recorded range for e-bikes across the globe. And the Flluid-3 doesn’t fall far behind with a long range of 110 mi (180km)!

10. The ONEBOT-S7

The ONEBOT-S7 utilizes a unique three-fold structure instead of the usual two-step folding design that we’re all familiar with. This makes the e-bike ultra-compact when folded, so it can easily fit into the boot of your car, or slide under your workstation (however and wherever you wish to use it).

From bikes with square-shaped wheels to bikes with triangle-shaped wheels – these cycles will completely catch your attention!

1. Q’s Wheelless Bike

The US-based YouTuber The Q recently pulled all the stops with his bicycle that has NO wheels! Q’s bicycle doesn’t have wheels, but it features rotating elements that help it move forward. The bike has been amped with two sets of wheel belts that are mounted at absurd angles to produce extremely attention-gripping silhouettes. As a result, the Wheelless Bike works like a tank, with the rotating wheel belts driving you and the bike forward.

2. Gordieiev’s Bicycle with Square Wheels

Sergii Gordieiev designed a bicycle with square wheels! 3. Infinity All-wheel Drive Bicycle

Stuttgart-based designer Stephan Henrich, this innovative and uniquely shaped bicycle is one of the most out-of-the-box automotive designs I’ve seen in a long time. The all-wheel cruiser moves forward with the help of a monotyre-clip chain system that forms a temporary rim in the wheel sections, as well as a dental belt drive in the interior groove. The monotyre is powered via the central wheel as the crank generates the force required to churn the wheels.

5. IEDEX

Called IEDEX, this electric bike is amped with sufficient space to store camping essentials without creating any sort of visual disparity. The e-bike has been designed with ad-hoc space to store two luggage bags in the frame itself. The bicycle frame doesn’t adopt the usual triangular or connected shape for structural integrity but rather adopts a unibody design.

This DIY wooden bicycle is an open source design that makes you think about sustainable living!

This bicycle made of plywood was created with an intent to get more people to focus on sustainability. The open source design is called ‘Openbike’ and despite the obvious problems that come with a bike made from plywood, it is still an affordable and lightweight alternative to those who want to live on a budget but are also eco-conscious. You can download the files to build your own bike here!

“This is not about bicycles! Open your eyes, this is about you, about your attitude towards the future. Do you think that the pollution of the cities will disappear by itself? Do you think traffic jams are caused by others?” reads the Openbike website which makes the mission statement of the design very clear – they’re not claiming to offer the durability or a thief-proof bike but rather shift your perspective on affordability and sustainability.

The multidisciplinary Spanish design studio wants to reduce carbon emissions in cities by empowering people with technology which is why they made Openbike so that the files can be downloaded and fabricated by anyone in the world. They have been prototyping designs since 2017 and the final version is can be used by anyone, incorporates storage racks to transport goods, and employs a simple construction from widely available materials like off-the-shelf plywood.

Architects Raquel Ares and Iñaki Albistur said, “It is a manifesto on sustainable urbanism, urban transport, distributed manufacturing, shared knowledge, the community, and the responsible use of resources, that materializes in the design of a non-polluting urban transport, the bicycle, that can be manufactured by its own use within the city where it is going to be used.”

To fabricate the bike, you have to download the drawings from their website. Then you can take the drawings to a local digital fabrication workshop where the CNC machine cuts the body of the bicycle from plywood and uses 3D printing for elements such as the saddle, front hub, and hand grips which could also be recycled from old bikes depending on the resources available.

The fabrication files for Openbike are licensed under creative commons 4.0, allowing the designs to be improved, modified, manufactured, and shared again by anyone across the world making it a truly accessible design that only gets better. Based on these principles of open design, Arquimaña encourages further development based on the use of local resources but with global techniques and tools adapted – this way each bike is a little unique, localized but also could be scaled on a global level based on characteristics.

The aim is to empower citizens as a transforming agent, putting technology at their service and prioritizing local production with local resources, which generates active and productive cities, looking to the future from an ecological perspective, trying to reduce carbon emissions to a minimum. The project is part of the global fab city initiative, which challenges cities to produce everything they consume by 2054!

Openbike hopes to offer citizens the necessary methods for manufacturing a non-polluting means of urban transport, the bicycle, by themselves. The project isn’t really about the bike itself, though, but rather the idea that people should think about how they can contribute to a better, more sustainable future.

Music Everywhere

Although earbuds are very convenient when on the go, somehow I prefer not to wear them while driving or riding my bike. I get the feel that blocking out essential noises, especially when cycling can be detrimental. Something like this Portable Speaker Design for Cycles is what I’d love to use instead. They look sleek and have an easy way to fit in. Love their simple looks and easy access to controls. Way to go!

Clever Handlebars

The Glo-Bars is a very clever handlebar system that integrates rechargeable LED lights to the bars of the cycle. These lights not only illuminate the track for the cyclist but also make them visible to oncoming traffic. The lights double up as turn signal indicators and also emit red light for traffic behind the cyclist. By simply customizing the handles, we have a safer cycling system in place!
