The Safe Lever Door Opener is a hands-free door opener designed for commercial settings like restaurants, doctor’s offices, and workplaces.

The output of mechanical aid devices that have come out in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the value of design when it intersects with health industries. When disaster strikes, designers pick up the pieces and build solutions. Doors have been a touchy subject for many throughout the pandemic–no one wants to touch a germ-ridden door handle. That’s why Dominic Spooner of Ember Design House created the Safe Lever Door Opener.

While various, innovative door-opening solutions have come out in recent years, like hands-free foot-door openers, they don’t work for every door type. Specifically, commercial settings like office buildings and doctor’s offices could benefit from door openers designed for door lever latches. Walking through office buildings and medical rooms, the doors are made for privacy above all else.

With this in mind, opening doors in commercial settings requires a bit more effort. The Safe Lever Door Opener works on lever latches by clipping to the door handle’s horizontal bar to provide a hands-free opening mechanism. The Safe Lever Door Opener comes with a bolstered area where users can place their forearms to unhinge the door’s lock and open the door.

Equipped with all the material necessary for setup, the Safe Lever Door Opener can be attached and fastened within five minutes. Inspired by his own hands-free method of opening doors, the team behind the Safe Lever Door Opener suggests, “It is time to eliminate that pain point safely, reliably, and affordably across restaurants, offices, schools, government buildings, and anywhere there are lever doors.”

Multipurpose EDC lets you pull door handles, push buttons, and carry bags without touching anything

Ever wondered why pirates with severed arms had hooks in their place? I’ve often wondered too and the one conclusion I keep coming to is that the hook allows you to the most number of basic activities – from pushing to pulling, carrying, and occasionally swiping. Moreover, you could zipline with it, and that sort of sounds like something pirates do a lot. Looking at the award-winning Handy EDC, I’m often reminded of that hook. It isn’t really a replacement for the hand but is a clever extension of it, allowing you to conduct most of your outdoor activities without touching a single foreign surface. Developed as a result of the pandemic, the Handy is a clever little EDC that lets you do practically most activities that require pushing, pulling, carrying, or pressing.

Crafted from metal, Handy is an open-source tool designed to keep you safe and germ-free. Its simple design allows it to easily slip onto your fingers like brass knuckles, giving you a great degree of control. Hooks on the opposite end come with protruded dots for easily pressing buttons on a keypad or elevator, while the hooks themselves act as useful devices for pulling open doors, twisting handles, or even carrying bags. When all’s said and done, just slide Handy into your pocket, or better still, attach it to your keychain using its dedicated keychain-hole. Handy comes in two sizes, a larger one that’s open-source and 3D printable, and a smaller one that you can pre-order on designer Matteo Zallio’s website.

The Handy EDC is a winner of the International Design Award for the year 2020.

On-demand TV viewing continues to secrete itself into the fabric of your lives and now its squeezing more viewing hours out of you from hotel rooms across the US. DirecTV's HD DVRs pack the typical programming guide and recording options, plus the ability for hotels to add up to 50 channels of their own content to the recorders -- meaning plenty of hotel infomercials dying to be paused, live. DirecTV has now officially launched its Residential Experience, bringing its DVR technology to 110 hotels across the country. Fortunately, the systems also include the hygienic touch of an anti-microbial remote. Classy.
