A transport designer imagines what F1 cars in 2021 will look like

For transportation designer and car enthusast Olcay Tuncay, 2021 is all set to be a very intriguing year because that’s the year Formula 1 will see radical changes, because the Concorde Agreement, which governs the sport and sets out the commercial terms on which teams compete, expires at the end of 2020.

Tuncay used this opportunity to design a car that he feels suit the immediate future of F1. Envisioned in the branding of Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes AMG (the two biggest names in F1), the car comes with a partially covered cockpit, a feature implemented just years ago, and has an overall streamlined look with minimal drag, and also sports the 18-inch wheels that will be a part of F1’s future tire contract.

2021 is being viewed as the first big chance for Liberty Media, F1’s newest owners, to significantly implement their vision for the sport’s future, making it more entertaining.

From Surf to Turf!

The latest from F1 enthusiast Olcay Tuncay Karabulut, the Maserati 2020 Bionic Concept takes aquatic inspiration from marine life and applies it to the design language of this far-out Formula 1 car. Designed with biomimicry from animals like fish and dolphins, the vehicle takes cues from their natural hydrodynamics and uses them to enhance aerodynamics. Thoughtfully placed fins, a porpoise-like nose and a fusiform body make it well-adapted for the road.

An F1 Drivers Guarding Angel

halo_01

Is the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile ever going to make up its mind?! First it was out with the Halo and in with the Shield. Now it’s in with the Halo and out with the Shield? These two distinct driver protection features for F1 seem to be in constant competition the FIA’s attention! Designer Olcay Tuncay Karabulut is prepared either way. First he gave us a glimpse as to what we might expect from the Shield with his ultra-aerodynamic proposal. Now he’s back at it with this concept for what a Halo system might look and function like. It looks pretty sleek but we’re not sure if that’s because it’s sitting on a hot Ferrari SF-18 concept that he’s also responsible for. Which one do you prefer?

Future F1 Driver Defense

shield_01

The FIA governing body’s recent decision to prioritize the “Shield” design to replace the current Halo in 2018 has left everyone wondering how this new driver protection system might look and function. Designer Olcay Tuncay Karabulut’s proposal gives us a glimpse into the future, highlighting what we might expect from the Shield.

Designed around the guidelines, it features a shallower angle than on the previously failed Aeroscreen. Rather than the Shield being an attachment around the edge of the cockpit like the Halo and Aeroscreen, the solution is more integral to the nose section of the car. This means greater aerodynamics than the previously trialled designs, but the question remains as to whether it will protect drivers as well as the Halo.

The 3-wheeled Chopper

nasty_trike_1

“Two wheels good. Three wheels better?” asks designer Olcay Tuncay, rhetorically speaking. I personally feel that the Nasty T-Trike looks stunning even in black and white! Halfway between a regular lowrider and a quad bike, the Nasty T-Trike has the power of a trike, with the swag of a chopper. Plus, how good would the wheelies on this thing be?!

Easy Tea-sy

sphere_001

It’s one thing to steep a personal cup of tea to perfection and something entirely different to get an entire pot just right. The Sphere tea maker aims to make things easier with an all-in-one countertop unit that can actually brew two different types at the same time.

The design utilizes vapor to brew the tea, boiling and distributes vapor/water at exactly the right time and temperature the user requires. Each piece is washing machine safe, making cleanup just as easy as brewing. For individual users it might be a bit much but for larger households, it’s a stellar solution for round-the-clock tea!

A Mod Chopper? Yes, way.

nt_05

The words modern and chopper don’t usually go together when we’re talking about motorcycles. There’s a certain vintage nostalgia surrounding most of these designs. The TT New Generation Chopper Motorbike Concept, however, refutes that ideology in the form of a hybrid sports cruiser that will not only turn heads but offer serious thrills!

The custom chopper has been designed with an elongated frame and stretched fork that gives it that low-rider look of custom choppers, but it sports sleek design elements that are more commonly associated with sport bikes. Unlike other custom chops, the TT also sports a clean, simplified appearance. Naturally, this elegant street bike looks perfect in a two tone white and black paint job.

Alfa dog’s back in F1!

alfaromeo_f1_car_layout

Or so everyone hopes! Until then, we have a charitable attempt from designer Olcay Tuncay Karabulut at making us feel that spark of hope! The concept car for Alfa Romeo’s hopeful F1 return features an aggressive yet fluid design, made to please die-hard F1 fans, while being aerodynamic. Another addition is the closed cockpit, a design direction that has been highly discussed in racing forums. But while people are having that debate, I’m just going to drool over this bad-boy!

The original red car that ruled the roads before Ferrari makes a comeback to Formula 1 in this far-out concept! Unlike traditionally angular F1s, this future Alfa continues the string of enchanting designer bodies for the brand with a curvaceous silhouette and voluptuous, proportioned shape. Projected 1,000 horsepower, 0-60 in less than 3 seconds and a top speed over 250 mph make a serious match for the pony brand.

The faster you drive, the more fuel you have

alfa_romeo_aw30_1

Transportation designer Olcay Tuncay has quite the idea. You know how wind causes aerodynamic drag while racing? How about we just harness that wind and use it to generate energy?! The Alfa Romeo AW30 is a futuristic concept Grand Prix racer that runs on wind-power. The engine, says the designer, is started using a solar-powered battery. Post ignition, wind power takes over as the air is channeled into the car body and is harnessed to power the 284 horsepower motor that sits inside this magnificent vehicle!
