Ice Cap Chills And Aerates Your Wine In Seconds

1_IceCap_LS-8426_SHOP

Good wine can be fussy. It needs to be served chilled, and preferably let to breathe for a bit. But with the Ice Cap, you can expedite the process somewhat. It’s a refrigerated funnel of sorts that cools and aerates your wine as you’re pouring it into your glass. Simply place the Ice Cap in the freezer for a few hours, then place it on top of your glass and pour your room-temperature wine. The wine will run through the chilled coils, aerating and cooling down at the same time, dropping any beverage’s temperature by up to 10 °C in seconds. We’re not sure how many glasses it’s able to handle before it need to be cooled down again, but we can’t imagine it not being able to handle at least a couple of them. For $35, it’s a handy gadget to keep in the kitchen.

Make Mini-Landscapes On Your Fingers With These Wooden Rings

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So here’s a novel idea. Etsy seller ‘CliveRoddy’ makes some cool laser-cut high quality birch plywood rings that come in one of three shapes: tree, mountain, or house. You can then combine and stack any of the three to make cool little landscapes on your fingers. Each one of these rings comes in three versions, so in the end you’re left with quite a few possible combinations. It’s quirky and fun… and that’s really all there is to it. It would be better if these rings weren’t made from wood, and feature more things than the three available, but the idea is really neat. It’s $24 for a set of 3 rings, but that’s only of one kind. If you want to combine all three shapes, you’ll have to spend $72.

Nest Gets Some Competition in the Form of $80 Quirky Norm

Quirky - General Electric - Norm Thermostat

New York-based Quirky has teamed up with General Electric to launch Norm, a $80 smart thermostat, along with six other great home security products.

Advertised as “Death of a thermostat” or “anti-thermostat,” the Norm is so advanced that it’s no wonder the manufacturer doesn’t want any association with that ancient piece of technology. In partnership with General Electric, Quirky showcased today the Norm and six other smart home products at the Connected Home press event. The entire line is meant to help people save energy and keep their homes safe, in various ways.

What sets Norm apart from the other smart thermostats is the array of sensors it relies on to determine where people are in the house, and where the temperature needs to be adjusted. The use of smart products is also detected and taken into consideration by Norm. The Wink app, which works with the other Quirky products, as well, allows to monitor and control temperature remotely.

The other smart home devices launched today include:

  • Tripper – a door/window server that improves home security. A pair of sensors costs $40.
  • Overflow – a water sensor priced at $35 that sends notifications when moisture levels are abnormal
  • Outlink – a $50 smart wall outlet that monitors how much energy the appliances in your home use
  • Tapt – a $60 smart wall switch that connects button-operated devices to Quirky’s smartphone app
  • Ascend – a $90 garage door sensor that connects it to Wink, in order to control it remotely and to have a log of who arrived and who left.

The sixth smart home device launched by Quirky is Spotter Uniq, a modular sensor system that can have up to four different functions. The options are quite diverse, and include, but do not resume to sound, temperature, air quality, motion, moisture, carbon monoxide. This one starts at $30, but the price goes up depending on the sensors you’re installing.

Overall, Quirky made some waves today, and let Nest know that it’s not alone. As a matter of fact, this sector has seen a lot of activity in the past few months, so each manufacturer of smart thermostats will have to come with new features periodically. Fighting to stay relevant is great for the progress of the industry, not to mention that the satisfaction of customers is thus maintained at high levels.

Power Bar Integrates Battery Pack

PickupPower_GROUP_LIMBO_4_OB_SHOP

The Pickup Power is a three-outlet power bar and surge protector. It’ll give you 1080 joules of surge protection, which we’re hoping is a lot… but could be very little since we know nothing about electrical engineering. We can tell you that aside from being a power bar, it houses a portable battery, which you can take with you to charge any of your devices. There is a 4,000 mAh and a 6,000 mAh version, which cost $80 and $100 respectively.

Pixel Waffle Maker Lets You Create Custom Pixel Waffles

pixel-waffles

This is a cool waffle maker featuring a 9 X 9 silicone tray where you can push individual “pixels” in and out, lock them in place, and create a custom design. Yes, the number of things you can draw with 81 pixels is limited, but just think of it as a challenge not so unlike the one facing early 8-bit game designers.

The appliance is currently being considered by Quirky for production, which means there’s no price set yet.

He’s also known for his ever-present bear. He probably won’t be shaving it off soon, but you can remove his beard anytime with this fun and cleverly designed Harden flash drive.

At first glance, it looks like a mere miniature model of Harden. But pull the beard and you’ll see that it’s actually a USB drive. Clever, clever.
