Motorola Photon Q wanders into the FCC with Sprint LTE

What's that? A Motorola phone with Sprint LTE, EVDO and the model number XT897 getting approved by the FCC? Why, it looks like this could be the Photon Q LTE! We weren't able to glean much in the way of detail save for the fact it packs NFC and LTE band 25 (Sprint's 1900MHz flavor), but this is good news for Motorola fans disappointed in the dearth of new handset options over the last six months. Motorola Atrix 3 'Dinara' powers through the FCC en route to AT&T

The Motorola Dinara, also known as the third-generation Atrix, has been making the occasional stop at the rumor mill to drop off knowledge bombs, but now it looks like we have some official FCC documentation to supplement the intel. Going undercover as the MB886, it sports the proper LTE bands for AT&T and even uses the same model naming convention as its two predecessors. Naturally we don't get much more information than the usual measurements and radios (of which include HSPA+ / WCDMA 850 / 1900 as well as quad-band EDGE), but the phone is rumored to include an LTE-friendly Snapdragon S4 processor and a 720p display.

Canadian government appoints Jean-Pierre Blais as new CRTC head

The past five years have certainly been an eventful time for the CRTC -- with broadband controversies and foreign ownership issues garnering plenty of headlines, to name just two examples -- and we now know who will be leading the Canadian regulatory agency for the next five. The Prime Minister's Office announced today that it has appointed longtime civil servant Jean-Pierre Blais as Chairperson, with his five-year term set to begin on June 18th. Blais comes primarily from a legal background, and has previously held positions at Canada's Treasury Board, the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the CRTC itself -- all of which Prime Minister Harper says makes him "well qualified" for the job, and gives him a "comprehensive understanding of the broadcasting and telecommunications sectors and the role of the CRTC." He replaces Konrad von Finckenstein, who's term ended in January, at which point the government indicated he would not be reappointed for a second term.

China greenlights Apple’s third-gen iPad for 3G use, China Unicom smiles knowingly

Apple's current iPad is already cleared for China in WiFi trim, but those of us who've wanted to roam through Kunming on care-free 3G haven't had any officially approved choices. That's ending soon, as the Chinese government just gave the cellular version (A1430) the all-clear. Like in most parts of the world, Apple's slate won't use LTE given the lack of any established network in the area; HSPA's as good as it will get. The clearance is slightly odd given that the State Administration for Industry and Commerce is leaning in Proview's direction when it comes to iPad trademark ownership. With the iPad still legally available in the country, though, it's safe to say that official 3G iPad carrier China Unicom is happy to prepare for a rush of customers who want to buy a cellular iPad without using the zipline delivery method.

T-Mobile myTouch Q makes its mark on the FCC

Talk about being tardy to the party: a month after its keyboard-less twin, the Huawei Ascend G312 QWERTY has finally received approval from the FCC. While this particular name may not sound very appealing to the average US customer, perhaps its other designation -- the T-Mobile myTouch Q -- will. Indeed, this is the 2012 iteration (the slide-out keyboard version, at least) of the carrier's annual series, and it sports quadband GSM / EDGE and 850 / AWS / 1900 / 2100 HSPA+. Most of the specs are already known: you can expect to find a 4-inch WVGA display, 1.4GHz MSM8255T chip with 1GB RAM and 4GB of onboard storage and room for microSD expansion. If you're a fan of the myTouch series -- or even hardware keyboards in general -- you likely won't have to wait too much longer.

FCC approves transfer of AWS spectrum from AT&T to T-Mobile

AT&T may have been hoping for the FCC to put the rejection stamp on its proposed transfer of key AWS spectrum to T-Mobile, but no such luck for the GSM giant this time. The fourth-largest carrier in the US, as a consolation prize for humoring AT&T's acquisition attempt, has been given the official go-ahead on accepting spectrum in a grand total of 128 Cellular Market Areas, including 12 of the top 20 markets in the country. This newly acquired property appears to be a key factor in T-Mo's LTE deployment strategy next year, as the company has recently announced plans to invest $4 billion in pushing out its next-gen network.
