The NES Advantage was an arcade style controller with joystick designed for the Nintendo system in the late 80′s. It even took it’s styling cues from the NES but it was basically just a joystick and buttons that you’d sit on the floor or table instead of holding it like the standard controller. Instructabler SantaB had a spare one lying around and decided it would make an awesome desk lamp. And it does.
He replaced the joystick with a gooseneck lamp, adding a switch where one of the controller’s buttons was originally. He even added a USB charging port on the side of the unit. Here’s a quick video demonstration:
Pretty cool idea and the light itself fits in well with the controller (because of the joystick replacement). It looks somewhat “natural”. Definitely a geeky desk lamp and not particularly complicated to make if you’re at least minimally handy.

The idea is quite simple (all the best ones are, right?)- add a silicone sleeve to turn your iPhone into a Game Boy-like device. The G-Pad does just that, giving you physical controls just like the og handheld distraction. The sleeve is designed to work with a specific Game Boy Advance emulator for iOS that puts the controls on the bottom of the screen. The G-Pad slides right over the onscreen controls, replacing them with a button overlay.
Everyone knows that all the best games were released back in the day anyway- Tetris, Donkey Kong, Mario, etc. Well at least the best for mobile phone gaming anyway- the simpler the better. That’s why games like Angry Birds and Flappy Bird are so popular- simplicity. Also people like birds I guess. Anywho, neat product that takes something new and brings it back to the good old days without losing today’s needed functionality (like Facebook and Candy Crush). (via coolest gadgets)

I’m not exactly sure if making furniture out of your old VHS tapes is the best use but it’s probably better than just throwing them out. Or not. Maybe this is what happened to Sandra Bullock in space (I don’t know for sure, I didn’t see the movie). It’s your favorite arcade game and an astronaut’s worst nightmare in one with the Space Invaders Fleece Blanket. Flappy Bird might be inexplicably gone from the iTunes App Store but that tricky little flying bird still lives on- in real life. Fawn Qiu made this incredible working game in a weekend with an Arduino Duemilanove, 3 servo motors, 2 buttons, a speaker, a reed switch, and handful of rare earth magnets. Just like the video game, you move the bird up and down and try to avoid the pipes. Check out this video to see it in action:
It’s a Flappy Bird in a box hack. And it looks almost as (if not more) difficult than the real game. She’s even going for a Kickstarter to try to get these into production kit you can build yourself at home. Good luck with that!
