Rumor Says Google in Talks to Invest Millions in Virgin Galactic

A story in Sky News claims that Google is in talks with Virgin Galactic to invest millions of dollars in the venture. Virgin Galactic is the project that aims to eventually take private passengers on a trip into space where they will get to experience weightlessness. According to the rumor, Google is eyeing the purchase of part of Virgin Galactic to get access to satellite-launching tech.

According to the report, Google will invest in two parts. The first investment is a $30 million stake in the Virgin Galactic holding company. In the second phase, Google will invest “hundreds of millions of dollars” according to the sources in a new joint venture.

That new joint venture will help Google with expertise for its own projects. The presumption here is that Google is looking for a way to get satellites that it gained with the purchase of Skybox Imaging into orbit.

Virgin Galactic now accepting Bitcoin for future flights into space

As the value and credibility of Bitcoin continues to skyrocket, Virgin founder Richard Branson now wants to let people use the digital currency to finance a flight into space. Ahead of its first trips next year, Virgin Galactic has already had one "future astronaut" from Hawaii book a Bitcoin-funded ticket and hopes that its affluent clientele will follow suit. An investor himself, Branson has been pushing for governments to regulate the peer-to-peer payment system and believes that today's announcement will give it more credibility. Neither Virgin Galactic nor Branson has indicated just how many Bitcoins you'll need before you get a return ticket to the heavens, but we suspect this isn't the future that Gene Roddenberry was planning.
