Saint Laurent reinterprets Girard-Perregaux’s iconic Casquette watch in titanium finish

Casquette designed by Swiss manufacturer Girard-Perregaux was a timepiece well ahead of its time with a never-before-seen form factor. The luxury watchmaker refreshed the watchmaking scene back in the 70s with this timepiece, and a reincarnated version of the classic showed up at the beginning of last year.

Girard-Perregaux calls it the Casquette 2.0 version and it retains most of the classic’s aesthetics. Now French luxury house Saint Laurent Rive Droite has again reimagined the watch for modern horologists. The remake comes straight out of the creative bits of the company’s Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello. Given the man’s diverse interests and skill level, it’s no surprise he chose Girard-Perregaux’s most iconic wristwatch as his canvas for a remake.

Designer: Girard-Perregaux Saint Laurent Rive Droite

This special edition version of the Casquette is limited to just 100 pieces and each one of them will be numbered for exclusivity. For watch lovers who already know the significance of the timepiece, it’ll be available at Saint Laurent’s stores in Paris and Los Angeles, as well as their online store available in select countries. The price tag of $6,700 is totally justified given the historic significance of the timepiece around which it is created.

The watch will adorn a black ceramic and black PVD-coated grade 5 titanium finish. The night rider-like vibe of this Casquette is highlighted by the 45-component quartz by Girard-Perregaux, tubular LED display and the black ceramic bracelet adorned with rubber lining gives it a distinct feel.

Comfort is enhanced in this reinterpretation with a much lighter construction and ergonomic case arching to take the shape of the wrist. This digital version also gets the modern chronograph to bring timekeeping of different locations if you are an avid traveler. And of course, the squat case and the minute display resembling a high-end calculator watch are unique in their own rights. A luxury timepiece maybe not, but something a nerdy horologist would love to flaunt!

Hublot create an exquisite green Big Bang watch fueled by recycling Nespresso capsules with eco-conscious approach

In an interesting collaboration that merges elegance and sustainability, Hublot has partnered with Nespresso to introduce a limited-edition watch that embraces recycling and screams green in creativity.

This remarkable fusion of luxury and eco-consciousness is dubbed the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin. It’s the first-of-its-kind Hublot timepiece made from recycled Nespresso aluminum capsules and real coffee grounds.

Designer: Hublot

Nespresso has been promoting environmental responsibility through collaboration with esteemed Swiss brands to find ways of producing new products from its discarded aluminum capsules. The Hublot Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin exemplifies the remarkable outcome of this shared initiative in a showcase of vibrant green colorway utilizing recycled aluminum and coffee grounds for construction.

The captivating green colorway of this limited-edition watch is inspired by the Master Origins Peru Organic Nespresso pod. Nespresso’s branding presence on the watch is understated but its iconic N symbol serves enough to substantiate the brand’s impact on this Hublot. The watch displays how repurposing used materials can benefit the haute horology.

Coming to the watch, Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin has a 42mm case meticulously crafted from recycled aluminum. Almost 28 percent of which comes from Nespresso coffee capsules. Anodized in a striking green hue , the case, crown and pushers are satin finished and polished for a refined and luxurious appearance.

Hublot takes sustainability a step further by incorporating recycled titanium into the caseback and container housing of the watch movement. This material usage enhances the corrosion resistance and durability of the watch while also aligning it with the ethos of minimizing environmental impact.

Inside the eco-titanium housing of the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin beats Hublot’s HUB1280 Unico automatic chronograph movement. This precision-engineered Hublot watch comes with choice of two straps, both crafted from recycled materials and attached to a click interchangeability system for easy swapping. One is a fabric strap made from 5 percent coffee grounds and 95 percent recycled polyester. The other one, a rubber strap is available in a combo of coffee grounds and recycled rubber.

As a testament to its exclusivity, only 200 pieces of the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin will be produced each one will retail for EUR 25,200 (approximately $24,000).

URWERK UR-102 “reloaded” is modern reinterpretation of a classic timepiece

URWERK introduced the iconic UR-102 wristwatch way back in time at the Baselworld 1997, and now the classic horological piece is reinvented in a modern avatar.

The Geneva-based brand has instilled a reputation for creating timepieces that push the boundaries of aesthetics. Now with this reloaded version of the wristwatch that broke the notions with its round shape and absence of hands back in the era, URWERK wants to revive old watchmaking traditions.

Designer: URWERK

The UR-102 “reloaded” restates the celestial body-like appeal of the watch, inspired by the Sputnik satellite. Therefore, the semi-reflective appearance and tweaked look retaining most of the DNA takes precedence in the looks. Case size has increased from 38 mm to 41 mm for a stronger presence and the crown earlier located at the 3 o’clock position has now moved to 4 o’clock integrating the futuristic appeal a notch higher. Also, the crown is now merged with the case and the lugs are now angular compared to the sharp lugs on the original UR-102.

The wandering hour complication has only one moving part like its inspiration and comes with a semi-circular arc on the dial to display the minutes. That arched minute scale wanders like a satellite from 0 to 30 and then returns to the 60 position during the descent. With the reloaded version URWERK has gone with a much clearer font for better readability. On the inside, the wristwatch is powered by a 4Hz frequency self-winding caliber 2.02 movement at 28,800 vph frequency and a power reserve of 48 hours.

The reloaded version water-resistant for up to 30 meters is safeguarded with a bespoke sapphire crystal on the face. To match the stunning dial, there is a rubber strap embellished with a textures Baltimore-quilt pattern and a micro-blasted titanium buckle. URWERK has not detailed in much about the horological design, but it’ll be available in satin-brushed titanium and black options. Keeping in mind the exclusivity of the UR-102 “reloaded” watch it’ll come in a limited twin-set edition of 25 units for a steep price tag of CHF56,000 (US$60,000).

Transparent Issey Miyake WATCH designed by Tokujin Yoshioka celebrates a decade of the brand’s signature timepiece

Japanese designer and artist, Tokujin Yoshioka released a water-shaped timepiece way back in 2011 revolving around the idea of “shape of water – transparent time.” Now, more than a decade later, the creative artist has crafted an updated signature wristwatch for Issey Miyake WATCH to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a signature timepiece.

Dubbed O-Bold, the watch is an ode to transparent look of the “O” watch series. Both in the name (which is the French word for water i.e., “eau”) and form, the timepiece carries natural appeal of one of the most important elements on the planet.

Designer: Issey Miyake WATCH

According to Issey Miyake WATCH, the O series subtly marks the “passage of time as if it were encapsulated inside.” All these years, the collection has dynamically evolved in an array of colors and variants. This revisited version of the series by Tokujin is specifically defined as ‘Bold & Fit’ – with quite a few simple changes to distinguish it from the inspiration. First up, the bangle has a broader form to amplify the transparent look. To balance it out, the wrist diameter has shrunk to fit watch enthusiasts with thinner wrists.

The biggest advantage of this model is its lightweight design that is high on comfort. So much so, that Issey Miyake WATCH believes O-Bold will actually make you “forget you are wearing it.” The minimalistic timepiece seems as if it encapsulates time as a body of formless liquid. For those who care about the specifications, the see-through watch is water resistant up to 100 feet and has a battery life of almost three years.

This exclusive timepiece is going to be up for grabs starting April 4, 2023, in two color options – “Smoked” and “Clear.” Given its unique aesthetics and the fact that an acclaimed artist (who designed the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Torch) has crafted this one, the meager price tag of ¥22,000 JPY (approximately $167) is worth every penny. The watch can be bought from online stores and select retailers in the first week of next month.

Meta Watch V2 surfaces online in leaked photos, confirming the suspected dual-camera design

Although it was suspected that Meta had axed all plans to make their wearable around 8 months ago, new photos show that the watch’s design has now entered a more advanced stage, suggesting a fleshed-out V2 that’s probably inching closer to a finished product. Revealed by Twitter user Kuba Wojciechowski, this new iteration confirms all our previous suggestions, including a detachable module featuring a watch face on the front with a notch and a front-facing camera, and a secondary, larger camera at the back that lets people record POV videos and BeReal-style picture-in-picture content.

The images show a rounded-square-shaped device running a watch face, with a pretty sizeable bezel containing a notch and a front-facing camera. The watch shape feels rather odd because it’s neither square nor circular, sitting somewhere in between. I imagine designing the UI for such a device would be weird, given that you can’t really watch videos in such a rounded-square display anymore, making it hard to consume content from Meta’s social media sites at Facebook, Instagram, and its chatting app WhatsApp. There are, however, two buttons on the side of the device, although it’s tough to say what their function is at this point.

The one set of details that still remains, however, is the presence of dual cameras. The front-facing camera eats into the display, while the rear camera (slightly larger) hovers right above a bulge that contains what I assume are the heart-rate sensors. You’ve even got contact pins on the other side that I assume are for charging purposes.

There aren’t too many details about the device’s build and specs, although Kuba mentions that it isn’t running Google’s WearOS, but rather a fork of its open-source Android OS. Facebook has for long played with the idea of building their own ecosystem and app network to escape the monopolies of Apple and Google, and this could just be it. There’s also a Qualcomm chipset on the inside, although it isn’t mentioned which one, and the outer case and band are still to be revealed to the public, although we did put together our own concept just about a year ago, right before it was suspected that work on the wearable had halted indefinitely.

Earlier last year, we covered the Meta Watch too, bringing life to its speculative patent-file images through renderings. If you want to read our coverage on the band from last year, click here.

Bugatti collaborates in Austria for the first carbon-fiber smartwatch to time your laps in a Chrion

Bugatti Chiron is one of the fastest production cars on the planet. When you take it to the track, you will need a capable timekeeper to record the matrix. This is not the intention – yet not short of the idea -that Bugatti has teamed with Viita Watches in Austria to create a watch that is constructed with a full carbon fiber housing.

The first-of-its-kind watch constructed completely with strong and lightweight material on the outside, the Bugatti Carbone Limited Edition smartwatch is designed with millimeter perfection to go with the hypercar from the French automaker.

Designer: Bugatti

The watch is not only a black beauty with carbon-gorgeous housing, it is a smartwatch capable of making head turns with its features. Comprising a 390*390 pixels AMOLED sapphire glass touchscreen, the watch boasts a 16.7 million color display and compared to its close cousin – the Bugatti Ceramique Edition One – the smartwatch is nearly 13 percent lighter.

According to Bugatti, the battery size of the Carbone Limited Edition smartwatch is 22 percent more than the Ceramique Edition one, yet it is a lighter model, thanks to carbon fiber as a choice of construction material. A visual amalgamation of black on blue, the Carbone has an always-on display and a battery life that lasts up to 15 days without GPS.

Taking of which, the world’s first carbon-fiber smartwatch is integrated with a GPS sensor. It’s embedded with a range of features to monitor an individual’s health and physical activity alongside recording a Bugatti’s laps on the track. The latter permits the wearer to keep tabs on the car’s speed, acceleration, and lap times automatically.

Other than this, the Bugatti Carbone can monitor stress levels and about 90 different sports and health functions. For instance, the dual sensors on the caseback can monitor heart rate and heart rate variability. It is 100 m water resistant and allows one to pair the carbon fiber housing with a matching gray/black silicone or nylon strap (both provided in the box). Compatible with iOS 13.0 and Android 7 or higher, the $2,700 Bugatti Carbone Limited Edition is strictly limited to 2,500 pieces (each engraved with a serial number to mark exclusivity).

This peculiar analog watch shows metaverse and real time on the same dial

Whether it’s about designing a worthy alternative to the Apple AirPods Max or rewriting the time as we know it; forward-thinking designer Junwoo Kim is in the midst of it all.

In his latest outing on the drawing board, the South Korean industrial designer has visited time in the metaverse, which according to him, is a time different from the real. The designer has conceived a watch for the metaverse, which is not an NFT wallet, but an analog timepiece designed to see the metaverse and real-time on the same dial.

Designer: Junwoo Kim

While the tech world zeros down on the nuances of a virtual world capable of real-time interactivity, I am thrilled by the approach Kim brings to the Hamilton Oasis’ dial. He perceives that socializing, commerce, entertainment, learning et al, in the metaverse will happen in a time difference from actual reality.

Whether you choose to disagree, you cannot deny the incredible aesthetics of the Hamilton watch. The smartwatch allows one to check time in the two worlds, so you have track of time in real and the metaverse to strike a balance in both parallels. A round case watch with a crown at the usual 3 o’clock position and a time toggle button at 9 o’clock, the Hamilton Oasis has semblance to atelier Ming Thein’s horological wonders.

Cased within a sturdy metal body the hybrid watch features one evident minute hand on the dial. This is controlled by the side button, which on the toggle, moves the hand accordingly to show time in the metaverse. The nice tangerine accents on the chrome dial are accentuated by the orange color strap of the Hamilton Oasis Progress Edition watch that boasts a skeletonized dial giving the wearer a clear peek at the movement within.

A pair of G-Shock watches arrive in blazing solar flare-theme to celebrate 40th anniversary of the brand

Haute Horlogerie is a synonym with Casio today. But when the watchmaker started out in the 1970s, it was known for its delicate line of timepieces, long until 1983 when it launched the shock-resistant G-Shock line-up. Now that the watch series, an epitome of toughness, celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2023; the build-up to the celebrations has already begun with the introduction of two scintillating Flare Red G-Shock watches.

The two special edition Flare Red G-Shock watches – MTGB3000FR and GWG2040FR – are the complimentary combination of rose gold and black IP coating on all metal parts to achieve a delightful solar flare-inspired pattern. The blazing solar flare theme is the main facet of the MTGB3000FR and GWG2040FR, which is figuratively an outcome of the toughness and dynamic energy radiated by these G-Shock watches.

Both the MTGB3000FR and GWG2040FR are available in multicolored bezel layered with carbon and colored fiberglass for the blazing red color. The latter is a new technique to laminate carbon with colored glass fiber mixed with phosphorescent material for a glow-in-the-dark effect. The pattern of putting the bezel through so much hard work means each timepiece is unique and no two such G-Shock watches look alike.

Interestingly, the MTGB3000FR is more than a shatterproof timepiece, the watch is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity. It syncs with the Casio Watches app to adjust the time automatically or kick off the phone finder, in addition to doing a range of other signature G-Shock tricks. GWG2040FR is not a connected option but it comes with dust and mud resistance and has a thermometer.

The enticing red front of the watches is complemented by the case back engraved with the Eric Haze-designed logo commemorating G-Shock’s 40th anniversary. Both the MTGB3000FR and GWG2040FR timepieces are 200m water resistant and feature Tough Solar Power. The cool watches are available for $1,300 and $1,100 respectively.
