Water Filtering for Dummies

carafe_02

The energy required for pumping, bottling, and transporting bottled water is nearly 1000 times higher than tap water! So why do we insist on continuing to use bottles (especially when we know where that material waste ends up)? The simple answer is… because we want the best taste.

The OE Filtering Carafe improves taste and quality using a filtering system that won’t let you forget to change it on time. The mechanical dial located directly on top of the unit acts as a sort of timer, driven by the flow of water pouring out. The dial will signal when it’s best to swap the filter based on the amount of water that has passed and not just the amount time it’s been used. Better yet, the filter chip itself can be replaced without throwing away a big bulky piece of plastic each time!

Watch Your Water

supers_01

There’s nothing quite like the visual and taste of fresh, falling, natural spring water. For urban dwellers, this is almost mere fantasy, but the Super-S Water Purifier aims to replicate the experience in a convenient appliance that fits in any home or apartment. The design’s visible water flow is reminiscent of naturally flowing water and allows users to ensure the device is clean. Its slim profile is made possible by a tankless system that saves counter-space and is more hygienic than others with a reservoir. Better yet, the smart design can be operated conveniently via the user’s smartphone to fill, cool or heat remotely as well as monitor water quality.

Water Wonderful Idea!

worth_water_1

Having worked as a designer, with focus in the water purification industry, there’s one major fact one must understand. There’s a vast difference between pure and drinkable water. Water meant for different activities usually is composed of different minerals and sometimes organic matter. Worth Water is a filter that understands that slight difference between water meant for consumption, and water meant for other functional means.

Designed around filters that can be swapped and changed, the Worth Water provides us with potable purified water, ionized water, and functional water. Just switch the filter based on your need. Clever!

A Clean Swim

Public swimming pools can get messy and dirty during the summer months and maintaining them is quite a task. Typically water filtration is done best when the pool is empty, however concepts like this Water Filtration are intriguing and helpful. Individual capsules of filtration systems line the pool ropes and help clean the water constantly. Yes, you can swim with peace without having to worry about how many kids have pee-ed in the pool!

Grab. Sip. Repeat.

Instead of taking a cup off the shelf, filling it with water, and placing it in the sink to be washed… why not let the shelf itself to all the work?! The S2 mounts directly to the wall to act as a shelf, purifier, dispenser… and…. wait for it…. dish washer! Once used, a cup can be replaced on the unit to be mist-washed, UV sterilized, and  hot-air dried.

Water Filter Too Beautiful To Hide

The Soma is by far the most beautiful water filter to date. The pitcher looks more like a carafe which in my mind is more inviting to drink from, not to mention the minimalist design makes it perfect to leave out on the counter. The Soma addresses a number of issues I have with other filters. It’s made of glass. There’s no flap on the lid to easily break off and the filtration system is made of coconut shells, silk, and PLA plastic.

If there’s a question on whether or not this is as effective as carbon, the filter was designed by David Beeman, THE man when it comes to filtering water. With 30 years experience in the industry, he’s created filtration systems for Starbucks, Peets and other global brands.

The company claims water actually tastes more crisp compared to traditional carbon filters. We haven’t tried it ourselves since it’s a Kickstarter project but with 9 days left, there’s still plenty of time to get you hands on one for less than what it will probably cost retail.

Water to the Rescue

One of the major challenges for those effected by natural flood disasters is finding clean drinking water. The Source of Water concept aims to help those in need get clean  water quickly and conveniently. The design is based on a simple principle that water pressure around the tube will push through the purifying layers, producing drinkable water with very little effort. The user simply has to drop the tubular filter in the center of the cross within the buoyant ring and remove when full.
