This Sliceable Cookbook is Cutting Edge

There’s more to being a chef than just searing or frying stuff up. A large part of the entire process is the preparation, and if you mess that part up, then you’ve effectively messed up the entire dish.

Columbia-based culinary school Escuela de Cocina Carull is well aware of that fact, which is why they came up with a truly unique and novel introductory cookbook that will test – and in the process, teach – students how to slice, so that they’ll hopefully make the cut.

Sliceable Cookbook

Students will have to carefully slice through the workbook pages by following the perforated guides and precise lines on the cookbook in order to access the recipes within. When they get the cut right, the recipe is their reward. If they get it wrong, they probably won’t have any dish to work on… because the recipe will be sliced to pieces.

It might be hard to imagine how the cookbook works based on just reading about it, so check out the clip below to see for yourself:

Now that’s what I call hands-on education.

Archos ChefPad Wants to Be Your Cooking Companion in the Kitchen

I don’t mind cooking so much when I have time, it’s rather enjoyable but I definitely need to follow a recipe. I can’t just walk into the kitchen and throw things in the pan and make it taste good, I have to have specific instructions. Of course you can access recipes and cooking books and videos if you’re brave enough to carry your tablet in the kitchen around heat, sharp objects, and liquids. Or you could get a tablet designed specifically for the kitchen.

Archos has unveiled a new Android 4.1 tablet called the ChefPad and it’s designed around the features you need in a digital cookbook. The tablet comes with a silicone case to help protect it from spills and splashes. However, the tablet itself isn’t ruggedized so you still need to be careful not to drop it. The tablet also has a stand that allows you to prop it up for easy viewing and has a Chef Apps Selection that shows you the apps on the Google Play store specifically having to do with cooking.

Hardware features include a 9.7″, 1024×768 display, a 1.6 GHz dual core A9 CPU, a quad-core Mali 400 GPU, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of integrated storage. The tablet does have a memory card slot for storage expansion and has a two-megapixel camera on the front and back. The cameras will be perfect for sharing pictures of what you’re cooking on Instagram, of course.

The Archos ChefPad will be available this June for $209.99(USD).

Dining with the Doctor: Cooking for Whovians

If you read this site regularly, you know we’re fans of both Doctor Who and geeky foods. So when author Chris-Rachael Oseland tipped me off to her new Doctor Who fan cookbook, I had to crack open the cover to see what was inside.

dining with the doctor 1

Dining with the Doctor is a self-proclaimed “Unauthorized Whovian Cookbook,” but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of awesome Doctor Who inspired recipes between its covers. The 183-page book features more than 90 recipes for Whovians, most taking inspiration from specific episodes in the first six seasons of the 21st century reboot of the sci-fi show. There’s a recipe for each and every episode, so if you’re not yet caught up through last season, there are potential spoilers in the cookbook.

Recipes range from a healthy Banana Dalek to The Last Human Fruit Leather, to Chicken and Ood (Matzoh Ball) Soup, L.I.N.D.A.’s TARDIS Wellington and even a Fish Fingers and Custard Cocktail. Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve any Mrs. Paul’s fish sticks.

There are recipes for entrees, apps, desserts, cocktails, even homemade Jammy Dodgers. One of the cool things about the book is that there’s a little something for everyone, including a few recipes for lactose-intolerants, vegans, vegetarians, paleo and low-carb eaters too. You meet all kinds of people while traveling through space and time, so that only makes sense.

dining with the doctor 4

Dining with the Doctor is available in both print and digital editions over on Amazon. The print edition makes a great holiday gift for $19.99, while the Kindle edition is just $7.99 and a must for Whovians who like to cook themselves. That sounds weird, “who like to cook themselves,” doesn’t it? Probably best not to attempt that – unless you’re a Time Lord and can regenerate yourself into a new form after your meal, of course.

The Star Wars Cookbook: The Force Is Strong Within The Oven

Star Wars is such a huge part of our lives that we can’t seem to escape it, not that we’d try. It has even followed us into the kitchen, with this Star Wars Cookbook. What are we to do now?

High-Tech Almighty Board Takes on Three Major Roles in the Kitchen

Cooking isn’t and has never been one of my strengths. But since it’s incredibly wasteful and unhealthy to keep getting takeout or ordering for a delivery, I’ve since resorted to steaming most of my meals. It’s healthier although a bit bland, but at least I save a lot of time when it comes to preparation because there’s so little things to do for it.

A concept design that I think will benefit amateur cooks all over the world is the Almighty Board.

Almighty Board

It’s a digital chopping board that also functions as a cookbook and a weighing scale. If you think about it, those three things are the most important objects to have when you’re preparing your ingredients.
