Leonard Nimoy Gets Asteroid Named After Him

If you are a fan of science fiction in any form, you surely know the name Leonard Nimoy. Nimoy played Spock in the original Star Trek series and in many movies on the big screen including the Star Trek reboot. Nimoy died at age 83 earlier this year and to celebrate his life, an asteroid has been named in his honor.

It’s called 4864 Nimoy, and it’s a mountain-sized asteroid roughly 6-miles across. The asteroid orbits the sun once every 3.9 years and lies in the inner part of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

If you want to see 4864 Nimoy with your own eyes, choose the right telescope and look at the night sky next month, as it will be close enough to see. Coincidentally, another asteroid called 2309 Mr. Spock is actually named after the discovering astronomer’s cat.

ARC Games added two statues to the MMO to commemorate the actor. This is fitting not only because this is a Star Trek MMO, but because Nimoy also provided some voice work for the game as Spock and as a narrator.

The statues appeared in the game for the first time yesterday and they are placed on Vulcan and New Romulus. Be sure to click on the images above to see them in detail. In addition to the statues, both locations feature a plaque which pays tribute to several prominent Star Trek contributors who have passed on.

Many players made the pilgrimage to Vulcan in the game after Nimoy’s death. Leonard will be sorely missed. He was a great actor and by all accounts a great human being too.

Leonard Nimoy Mr Spock 1

Today is a sad day for trekkies and geek culture around the world as Leonard Nimoy has passed away at 83, a victim of pulmonary disease.

Leonard Nimoy, probably the most well known actor of the original Star Trek series has passed away at age 83, according to The New York Times. According to reports, he was suffering of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, caused by years of smoking (which he had quit decades ago). Nimoy was, besides an incredible and beloved actor, a prolific artist undertaking in writing, a photography, and music. Yet it is his role as Spock which changed the world and geek culture forever.

The original Star Trek series had icons such as Nimoy himself along with William Shatner and George Takei, and many other men and women who have found their way into the collective subconsciousness forever, all thanks to a three season series from the 1960s. When movies started coming out, Leonard reprised his role many, many times and even voiced animated versions of his character and appearing in J.J. Abrams’ reboot. He was deeply involved with the universe and his character, having written two biographies about it titled I Am Not Spock and I Am Spock. And to us, he will forever be. We’ll miss you Leonard.
