Watch Stephen Colbert challenge a ‘Super Mario’ speedrunner

You've probably seen video game speed runs before, but on a major TV channel? Not likely... until now. In what appears to be a first for nationwide US TV, The Late Show's Stephen Colbert ran a segment that pitted a speedrunner (Super Mario Bros. 3...

Guy Clears Super Mario World in 23 Minutes While Blindfolded, May Be Daredevil

I can’t even tie my shoelaces while blindfolded, but some people manage to do some pretty amazing stuff without sight. Like speedrunner PangaeaPanga. This guy recently did a run of Super Mario World while blindfolded – and he did it in only 23:14.

That’s under half an hour people. While blindfolded. I’m fairly certain this guy lives in Hell’s Kitchen and has a law office somewhere. It’s really amazing to watch this guy. He has some mad skills.

I think he uses the sounds of the game to know what to do and when to do it, but I could never pull this off. It must have taken him a whole lot of practice.

Speedrunning Nintendo Video Games at its Finest

Super Mario 64

Part of playing and finishing a video game is enjoying every little bit of the world you’re immersed in, finding every Easter egg and doing every possible side mission. But sometimes it’s fun to see how fast you can go through it, which is called performing a ‘speedrun.’

Not all games are built for that kind of playing style, but the older Nintendo games and on other platforms like Sonic for Sega were simply made for that kind of concentrated effort.

How concentrated? Well, karljobst , a popular user on Twitch, got an idea of playing three Nintendo games he used to sit on quite often during his younger days (not that he’s so old right now) – Zelda: Ocarian of Times, Super Mario 64 & Goldeneye 007 and trying to complete them in under an hour.

The result? A lot of fun sitting in front of three screens with three different controllers and amazingly completing all of them in 51 minutes. For people who love watching others playing video games, updated or classic, this is the perfect feat for you to invest your time in.

Man Finishes Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007 & Zelda: OoT in Less Than 1 Hour

So you’ve finished some of your favorite game more times than you can count. You know all the shortcuts and can even finish them in one sitting. What’s your next challenge? If you’re YouTuber KarlJobst, you play and finish three Nintendo 64 games. At once. In under an hour. What.

Karljobst fired up Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on three different N64 consoles and TVs, then cycled through the three games as cutscenes played on the other two. Of course, he inevitably let Link, Mario or Bond sit idle from time to time so he could focus on one game. He finished GoldenEye 007 in 21:51, Ocarina of Time in 18:10 and Super Mario 64 (a 16-star run) in 15:44. Don’t believe me? Watch and watch and watch:

I guess the opposite of this would be watching Tarn Adams complete Dwarf Fortress.

Player Beats Super Mario Bros. in under Five Minutes

I don’t care how good you are at playing Super Mario Bros., you have to be impressed by someone beating the game in under five minutes during a speedrun. This is a new record, and the gamer who did it goes by the name Blubbler.

The exact time was 4:57.69. It barely beat the record, doing so by less than a second. Do you remember how long it would take a typical player to beat the game way back in the day? If you had told someone then that it was possible, they would have just laughed at you. Of course, it helps if you skip collecting coins and power-ups like this guy does.

Check out the video and see how Blubbler did it.
