An Awesome Rubberband Version of Han Solo’s Blaster

Han Solo’s iconic sidearm, the DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol is a solid sci-fi gun. The design is rugged and cool, plus it shoots lasers. What more do you need? These qualities make it an instant classic. But if you prefer rubber bands to lasers, Slingshot Channel’s Joerg Sprave has made that a reality.

This wooden replica gets the details just right. The other thing that makes this blaster replica stand out is that it looks like it is shooting lasers. This was accomplished by using miniature glowsticks as projectiles. That’s a pretty genius idea. Leave it to Joerg to come up with this.

I would pew pew pew all day long with this gun. Of course, range and accuracy leave a lot to be desired here, but that is to be expected. This blaster just looks so cool and he did a great job giving it that weathered and worn-in look. See it in action in the video and you will want one for yourself.

What’s really cool is that this rubber band gun can be loaded up with five bands, and then fired semi-automatically when you pull the trigger:

Rubber Band Machine Gun Is Fully Automatic, but Reloading Isn’t

We’ve featured a variety of rapid fire rubber band guns before, but they were either custom made or crazy expensive. XYZbot is here for us poor, lazy and non-mechanically-inclined folks. They launched a Kickstarter fundraiser for a fully automatic and electric rubber band machine gun that’s cheap and easy to assemble.

The gun is made of laser cut wood. All you need is a pair of pliers, a screwdriver and 30 minutes of your time to assemble the gun. Judging from the image and the video, you’ll need five AA batteries as well, which is a bummer. I suppose you can use rechargeable batteries to cut down on costs and waste. The gun only has one mode, rapid fire, which spews rubber bands at about 800 rounds per minute. You can only load 64 rubber bands at a time though. XYZbot said you can try loading two rubber bands per slot for a total of 128, but you’ll have to be more careful – and more patient – when loading.

Now comes the best part: a pledge of at least $49 (USD) on Kickstarter will be enough to get you a kit. You can also pledge at least $59 to get the gun in time for Christmas.

Use a Rubber Band As an iPhone Grip

It seems there’s always a better iPhone case around the corner… While I don’t think I have that many iPhone cases, I do have about 8 and unlike some people boast that their iPhones are naked, and without protection, I like to have my iPhone nicely protected, so that I can sell it when I eventually upgrade. That being said, using a rubber band as simple iPhone grip is definitely a cool idea.

If you like the naked iPhone look, but still want to get a better grip on yours, then check out what Instructables user timwikander came up with. You can basically use any thick rubber band and stretch it out around your iPhone, without sacrificing much in looks. While he reports that he was able to drill in a couple of holes to get access to the ports, I think it’s probably better just to remove it when you need access. That way, the rubber band remains tight and secure, no matter what.

If you can find some transparent, thick rubber bands, it might look really good too.
