Android Silver Devices Will Replace the Google Nexus Line

Android Silver

Recent reports from TheInformation.com suggest that Google might kill the Nexus family of phones and tablets in favor of high-end Android Silver devices.

One of the things that made the Nexus line so popular was the price-quality ratio. At half the price of their Apple counterparts, Nexus smartphones and tablets packed plenty of firepower to satisfy even the most pretentious Android users. Still, after this year’s Nexus 6 smartphone (which most likely will also be made by LG) and the Nexus 8 tablet HTC is rumored to work on, the line will be no more. If anyone wants to analyze the names of the products, they might notice that after 6 comes 7, and Nexus 7 already is a product. Have to admit that Google might not have thought this through when they started naming their devices. The new Android Silver line makes sense not only from a naming viewpoint.

The launch of the Android Silver handsets will mark a change on how Google treats its own products and customers. By creating a new line of products, Google tightens the competition with Apple, while diminishing at the same time the power (and the market share) of Samsung.

The Information reports that “The expensive effort involves dumping the Nexus phone brand in favor of a new programme called Silver, under which manufacturers and wireless carriers will be paid to produce and sell high-end devices that closely adhere to Google specifications, according to four people briefed on the project.”

LG and Motorola (whom Google sold to Lenovo earlier this year) might be the first one to build Android Silver smartphones. On the other hand, Samsung, HTC and Sony might not have this privilege so soon, so they will remain with the satisfaction of having Google Play editions of their handsets.

A new line of products could represent the best opportunity for Google to launch a new version of Android, maybe even 5.0. This move has been anticipated for a while, but instead of making it, Google decided to take small steps.

In the end, the role of the Android Silver line is to reduce the bloatware and the number of non-Google apps that come on Android phones. That and delivering products of an even higher quality.

Reebok Gundam Instapump Fury: Mobile Shoes

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Instapump Fury, Reebok will be releasing 27 different variants of the lace-less shoes throughout spring and summer. I don’t know why there will be 27 variants and not 20, but I do know that two of those variants are based on the Gundam series.

The first colorway takes after the RX-78-2 aka the OG Gundam. The scheme makes the Instapump Fury look like kid’s shoes, but perhaps the gray part of the upper is more pronounced in person. The second colorway is based on another classic Gundam robot: Char Aznable’s MS-06S Zaku II. I actually like that one better because it’s gaudy, which is exactly the look that a freakin’ Reebok and Gundam mashup should aim for.

According to Milk, the shoes cost HK$1,499 each (~$190 USD). They should be in Reebok retailers soon. I bet Laplace’s Box has one of these inside.

Deal Of The Day: 20% Off On TrackR Tracking Sticker

redesign_trackr_mf

The TrackR sticker is a coin-sized Bluetooth-enabled device that sticks to any item you wish to keep track of. Just stick it on, and when you can’t find it anymore, launch the app on your smartphone and locate it in an instant. It’ll tell you the distance to your object, and at the press of a button, you can toggle an audible alarm on the sticker. It’s actually a two-way relationship, so if you’ve lost your phone but have the TrackR device in hand, you can press it to have your phone ring, even if it’s set to silent. Of course the tech requires you to be within Bluetooth range, but not necessarily your own; if another TrackR user passes within range and you’ve declared your item lost in your own app, you’ll get a notification of its whereabouts. You can pair up to 10 such stickers and track just about any item of value. Normally, you’d pay $25 for one sticker, but you can get it for $20 today.

Where’s Your Favorite Book? Right Here, In Your Bibliochaise Of Course

bibliochaise_ss-960x350

The Bibliochaise is a creation of Nobody & Company, an Italian design firm. It’s made from “materials adapted from high performance yacht technologies”, which sounds like it’s going to be expensive. The chaise is able to hold up to 300 books, while giving your living quarters a decidedly artsy/academic aura.

And while it does sound expensive, we don’t actually know how much it is.

Peek-I iPhone Camera Attachment Lets You Take Sneaky Shots

peek-i-640x448

We’re not sure how to feel about this product. It’s a tiny pivoting mirror that attaches to your iPhone’s camera and allows you to capture a shot of something that’s not directly in front of you. It pivots 360 degrees, but opens at a 45 degree angle, which means you’re limited to capturing something that’s exactly to the side of the phone’s plane: straight up, down, or sideways.

Now, you could make a case that there may be situations where you want to capture someone candidly, and that having a camera pointed at your subject may well draw their attention and cause them to lose whatever pose interested you in the first place. That’s the artistic argument. But then you have the creeps… So the question is, do you judge a product negatively because it has the potential to be abused? We’re leaning on the “no” side, which is why we’re telling you about Peek-I. It’s a cool device, as long as you don’t use it stupidly.

It’ll set you back all of $15 on their very well funded Indiegogo campaign.
