Pikachu Nintendo 3DS XL Finally Gets a U.S. Release

I choose you Pikachu! Pokémon fans who prefer playing the 3DS over walking around outside and playing Pokémon Go will want to run out and buy this handheld. Nintendo has announced that it’s bringing its bright yellow Pikachu-branded 3DS XL to North America next month.

This isn’t a brand new product. Nintendo launched it in Japan last year, but folks in North America were left out at the time. Now fans in this part of the world can get their hands on one that’s not region-locked to Japan, and without paying some exorbitant markup for an import. This portable console bares a Pikachu on the case, but aside from that there are no additional extras or games. It is just for the cosmetic bragging rights.

You’ll be able to purchase the official Pikachu 3DS XL in North America starting February 24th for $199(USD).

Nintendo Introduces Three New Special Edition 3DS XL

Nintendo 3DS XL Super Smash Bros. box

The next three months see the release of three different Nintendo 3DS XL handhelds.

No New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL for you, North America and Europe. While Japan is getting the latest, c-stick featuring model of Nintendo’s handheld line, coming this fall and the holiday season to retailers are a trio of special edition 3DS XLs that have some lovely coats of paint. All three priced at $199.99 USD.

It all begins on September 19, when a Super Smash Bros. themed 3DS XL system (pictured above), available in either red or blue, will be released, perfectly timed for the inevitable North American launch of Nintendo’s all-star brawler on October 9. The hood of the system features the game’s large cast of popular gaming heroes and villains, like Mario, Link, and Pikachu.

Then on October 10, Gamestop will be offering a NES Edition Nintendo 3DS XL that is exclusive to the largest retailer in the states for video games. This one-of-a-kind handheld is NES nostalgia on full blast, with the classic 8-bit console’s controller decked upon the cover and a box that looks like the system itself. How cute.

Lastly, for the Japanese role-playing game crowd, a dark purple 3DS XL prettied up in the style of Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. Publisher ATLUS will be dropping the upcoming 3DS-exclusive JRPG – a spin-off title in their popular Persona series that delivers some cutesy graphics, but hardcore gameplay – on November 25 to retailers everywhere.

It’s interesting to see Nintendo tempting folks into buying re-purposed hardware, while a brand new revision is about to launched (in Japan) and should eventually arrive in the U.S. But I guess if there’s one way to attract sales, these fancy-looking 3DS XLs might just do the trick.

The box that it comes in looks like a Nintendo console. It’s like they suddenly figured out what fans want and are giving it to us. You feeling okay Nintendo? Aside from that, there will also be two special edition Super Smash Bros. 3D XLs. A red one and a blue one. Lastly there will also be a Persona Q version.

How would you change Nintendo’s 3DS XL?

DNP Nintendo 3DS XL review Bigger is better, but it's still not quite enough

Nintendo's 3DS XL had a bigger screen, was more comfortable to hold and doubled its internal storage. What did it lack? No secondary analog stick, a compelling digital content offering and any sort of oomph under the hood. Those three were nearly deal breakers for our reviewer, who said the handheld was good, but not enough to convince you to upgrade. But was our own Mr. Smith right to damn the console with his faint praise? Share your experiences of owning this device with us in the comments below.

Circle Pad Pro accessory will ruin your Nintendo 3DS XL’s silhouette for $20

Circle Pad Pro accessory will ruin your Nintendo 3DS XL's silhouette for $20

Is it worth adding a lop-sided $20 piece of plastic to your already-substantial 3DS XL in order to gain a second analog thumb stick? It's a good question and finally one worth asking now that Nintendo has announced that the currently Japan-only Circle Pad Pro for the XL will start shipping in the States tomorrow. When we went hands-on last year, we found that it added predictable amounts of girth and also blocked the cartridge port, but compensated by making the handheld more comfortable to use, not least by adding larger shoulder buttons as well as the thumb stick. It's also worth pointing out that the smaller 3DS version of the accessory enabled better controls for left-handed players in Kid Icarus, so there could be some subtler benefits too. We've embedded our hands-on video after the break, so you just need to hold a $20 bill up against your screen and decide which looks better.

They already have over 15 versions of 3DS and 3DS XL consoles but now, with the Mint/White Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo are preparing to release another one.

Yellow Pokémon and White 3DS XL Consoles Head to the UK

After teasing special edition consoles for Europe last month, official launch dates for three different special Nintendo 3DS XL bundles have been announced. The most anticipated of the three special...

Pikachu Yellow Nintendo 3DS XL Hits Europe December 7

If you live in Europe and have someone on your Christmas list who wants a new Nintendo 3DS XL, you’ll have a couple of new options to choose from in time for holiday shopping. The most interesting of the new 3DS XL consoles is one that Pokémon fans will love. This version will come in a bright Pikachu yellow color.

Sadly, the handheld includes no bundled video games and doesn’t even have an AC adapter. Apparently, Nintendo is no longer offering AC adapters with their handhelds in Japan or Europe, but will continue to include AC adapters in North America.

If Pokémon isn’t your thing, there are two different white 3DS XL bundles coming as well. One of the white systems will come with Mario Kart 7 pre-installed. That version will launch on November 16. The other white model comes with Super Mario 3D Land pre-installed. That system will be available on the same day the Nintendo Wii U launches, November 30.

There’s no word on a North American release for either the Pikachu or white 3DS XL.

Charizard 3DS XL burns through Japan’s Pokémon Centers in December, snag one if you’re lucky

DNP Charizard 3DS XL burns through Japan's Pokmon Centers on December 15th

Nintendo is notorious for releasing awesome limited edition hardware abroad, but here in the US of A, we tend to get the short end of the joystick. Case in point, the house that Mario Miyamoto built is releasing a Charizard-themed 3DS XL on December 15th in Japan for ¥18,900 ($237). Available exclusively at Pokémon Center stores, aspiring buyers will need to complete an order form and win (yes, win) a drawing for a chance to purchase one of these beautiful monsters. Winners will have from December 15th through January 14th to claim and purchase their prize. As for you unlucky entrants, you'll have the opportunity to indulge in one of America's favorite pastimes -- buying Nintendo collectibles online at an extremely high markup.

Nintendo reports continued first-half losses for 2012, is waiting on the Wii U

Nintendo reports continued first-half losses for 2012, is waiting on the Wii U

Nintendo's reported its financial results for the first of half of the year, and things are still a little rocky. Net sales in the last six months have decreased 6.8 percent compared to the same point last year, while net income continues to drop, this time by 27,996 million yen. As of September 2012, Nintendo has now sold over 22 million 3DS units (three million more since last quarter), while the Wii remains just shy of the 100 million milestone, settling at 97.2 million units sold. Nintendo looks to be in a similar position to last year, with customers still waiting for the company's next big console to appear -- and the gamesmaker hoping they will. Laying blame at the strong yen, the company has dramatically cut its forecast for the rest of the year, down from 20 billion ($250 million) to 6 billion yen ($75 million), pinning its hopes on 3DS sales ahead of the Wii U's global launch later this year.
