Hive-Minded Robots Swarm in the Water

We have robots that can swarm on land and in the air and now they have invaded swimming pools. These robotic boats from the University of Pennsylvania are pretty neat and kind of cute too. Each boat is named after periodic table elements. And they won’t try to drown us either – not for a while at least.

For this DARPA-sponsored project, engineers are trying to get this fleet of small robotic boats to cooperate to form useful structures that can withstand the movements of water, while being able to stiffen as needed to handle vehicular or other traffic. The university has over 100 of these prototype floating robots. They are each controlled by a tiny Gumstix Linux computer use four separate motors to enable omnidirectional movement and zero-radius turns.

This is useful for more than just playing in the pool. A swarm of these robo-boats could form bridges, runways, or even islands. Imagine what larger versions could do for rescuing people at sea or forming impromptu bridges so that people could evacuate during a terrible storm. They could even help to create an impromptu runway for delivery of supplies and transport of personnel.

You can see the robots in action in the video clip below:

Inflatable Climbing Wall (for your yacht)

inflatable yacht climbing wall Inflatable Climbing Wall (for your yacht)
Are you the type of person who takes one look at their custom built superyacht and thinks to themselves, “damn! I forgot to put a climbing wall in”? Well put down your monocle and take a look at these inflatable climbing walls for your megayacht. Each climbing wall has 3 different color-coded route types up in varying difficulties.

Watch out for photoshopped sharks, climber! Just inflate it when you need to and deflate when you’re on the move. Get a real gym workout while yachting and laughing at those poor peasants over in the next superyacht over who do not have such luxurious workout equipment while at sea. Peasants! Measures about 9 by 15 feet. Developed by Green Yachts. (via bornrich)

Hot Tub Boat

hot tug Hot Tub Boat
Normally you need to be on a cruise ship or a mega-yacht to be in a hot tub on a boat. But not with the HotTug, the 6-8 person hot tub that’s also a boat. The Hot Tug has a wood-fired stove to keep the water in the hot tub toasty warm as you motor around powered by a built-in electric motor or a conventional outboard motor. I suppose you could use it without the water in it too:

When the boat is filled, it’s almost as if nothing is between you and the river water (save for a narrow rim). Plus I guess you don’t have to worry about baling out this boat. You could cruise around in a bathing suit in the middle of Winter. The boat is motoring around Rotterdam these days, available for rentals, or you can purchase one (worldwide delivery) for your home.

The Hot Tug Hot Tub Boat Is A Mouthful To Pronounce, Seems Fun

At first glance it sure looks like your little boat is taking in water and is about to sink. The two people in the picture are just pretty darn cool about it. Then you look closer and realize that nothing of the sort is happening: they are happily soaking in a hot tub! It just happens that the tub is inside the boat. That, is the Hot Tug Hot Tub Boat (HTHTB) from the Netherlands. Containing up to 2,000L of water and propelled either by an integrated electric motor, or an outboard one, the HTHTB can fit up to 6 passengers looking to sit in water… while sitting in water. The H2O is heated through a wood stove and the contents can take around 3 hours to reach the desired temperature. No matter, since you’re likely to get one fantastic ride for your patience… and also for your money: prices range from €8,950 ($11,575USD) for a bare no-engine/no-heater hull to €16,450 ($21,260USD) for the fully equipped version.

FishPi sets course for the open sea, captained by a Raspberry Pi

FishPi sets course for the open sea, captained by a Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi's journey to reach owners has been a lengthy one, but Greg Holloway is preparing to send his board on a longer voyage -- one across the Atlantic. Nestled inside a tupperware tub, the RaspberryPi is the brains of FishPi, an autonomous vessel -- guided by GPS and a compass -- that measures 20 inches from bow to stern. Currently in proof-of-concept form, the craft uses a 40 mm rotating propeller and draws juice from batteries powered by a 130 watt solar panel. Producing kits for students, enthusiasts and professionals is the goal of the project, but testing and development are still on the docket. While the Linux-laden launch isn't ready for the high seas quite yet, you can sail to the source for the technical breakdown or check it out at the Nottingham Hackspace Raspberry Jam next month.

Anyone got a spare $190,000 they can give me so I can buy a Flying Hovercraft from Hammacher Flying Hovercraft FTW? I’ll give you a ride in it. This hovercraft not only glides over land and water like the regular hovercrafts you probably already have sitting in your garage, but it can also soar up to 50′ in the air thanks to wings. Fly right over your buddies in their old outdated ride-on-the-water-only hovercrafts. It’s the new style… 4 and 3 and 2 and 1…

Sure the gas mileage isn’t great, but you can make up for it by going in a straight line to your destination, over most any object. Here’s the joystick controlled cockpit:

First solar-powered boat to circle the world pulls into home port, contemplates next move

First solar-powered boat to circle the world pulls into home port, contemplates next move

It's been two years since we last heard of the 98-foot-long solar-powered boat, which at the time was gearing up for its big journey around the world. Well, some 19 months and 37,286 miles after setting sail from Monaco, the MS Turanor PlanetSolar has finally made it home. The PlanetSolar broke four Guinness world records along the way, including the all-important "first circumnavigation by solar-powered boat," and it made stops on six continents to promote solar energy. Oh, and the team fended off Somalian pirates in the process, too. Now that it has a moment to catch its breath and soak up some rays at leisure, the MS Turanor could become any number of things -- from the world's largest solar battery to a "green luxury yacht." The latter option would certainly befit its chichi home port.
