Saracenic Scissors

The beauty of design is that it brings beauty to the otherwise mundane. Taken up as an attempt to merge scriptures with daily objects, the reinterpretation of these scissors create a poetic balance between the tangible and intangible. The inscription on the scissor speaks of how even the most simple acts in traditional craft are divine, being performed by god, existing within the creator. A wonderful way to look at craftsmanship under a more pure light. A lovely design philosophy to have!

Japanese Robot Mimics Complex Calligraphy

It takes years for a person to learn how to write Japanese or Chinese characters. There’s good news though. Robots can do it a lot quicker. A research group has developed a ‘bot that can identify and mimic detailed brush strokes that are required to write these kinds of characters.

The Motion Copy System was developed at Keio University by Seiichiro Katsura. It stores the gestures associated with traditional Japanese calligraphy, and copies them. All that one needs to do to train the system is to guide the robot’s arm with their hand, and it can precisely replicate their recorded brush strokes. Unlike traditional system, the robot can record and reproduce the force applied to the brush similarly to when people touch something.

The calligraphy replication ‘bot was presented at the 2012 Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies in Tokyo, Japan.

Calligraphuck Profane Letterpress Cards Let You Curse With Cursive

If someone pisses you off, let them go. Don’t curse, don’t fight, don’t even hope that they’ll trip and fall flat on their faces as they walk away. Instead, go home and whip out your set of Calligraphuck Profane Letterpress Cards.

CalligraphuckYou probably won’t feel like sending it off in the morning, but hey, at least you got it out of your system. But if you do end up sending it, at least you did it with a touch of class. Well, sort of.

I think you sort of already know what to expect from these cards based on their name alone.

Calligraphuck1

Calligraphucks are beautifully typeset cards emblazoned with a series of curses and profanities that might just make you blush.

Unfortunately, they’re not available – yet. They’re currently up for funding on Indiegogo, where a minimum pledge of $25 will get you a complete set of four awesome profanity-laced cards, including custom string and button envelopes to deliver your message in.

Head on over to Calligraphuck’s project page on Indiegogo for more information.
