WikiLeaks Cosplay: Lady Justice 2.0

DeviantArt member Ellen Grace aka nomoretribbles used to cosplay as a hobby, making and wearing costumes based on anime such as Code Geass and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed. She stopped in 2008, but she was inspired to make one more costume by the divisive media organization WikiLeaks.

Ellen’s costume is an updated take on the Roman goddess of justice, incorporating both WikiLeaks’ logo and the organization’s methods of information distribution and acquisition.

I got in touch with Ellen through a DeviantArt representative. She said she came up with the idea in May 2014 and spent about 3 months just looking for materials. She completed the costume this April.

The costume has almost 1,148ft. of fabric, “including costume silk, сhiffon and organza.” Ellen also used fiberglass, plastic, a variety of paints and leather. She said, “it was very difficult to find leather of the colors I needed”, but as you can see she eventually pulled it off. The completed costume weighs about 88lb., so she needs the help of four people just to take a single step when she’s wearing it.

Ellen said her cosplay is “some kind of monument for WikiLeaks.” She’s not planning on making any more costumes based on other organizations. Check out her DeviantArt page for more shots of this one-of-a-kind work.

Outcast Odyssey x DeviantArt Semi-Finalists: Scale, Steel, Steam, Smoke and Sorcery

Bandai Namco and DeviantArt’s Outcast Odyssey card art contest appears to be a great succcess. It’s now down to 25 semi-finalists, three of which will win the grand prize. Needless to say all of the top 25 are great, but I thought I’d share my favorites among the lot. First up are these three dragons.

This is Say Tchiiiiz !!!! by Dogan Oztel. If I have to pick just one to win the contest this would be it. It just grabs your attention and is both funny and fearsome.

This is Ancient Dragon by Huy Mai Van, who says it could be an animal, a plant or both. Its wings are so huge they can wrap around a mountain, and instead of breathing fire it can blast out a “destruction can[n]on” from its halo. Damn.

This is the great GYPAETUS – The Bearded Dragon by Fabio Listrani. I like to think of him as both a gigantic dragon and a sorcerer.

This is Robert Kim’s The Pirate King. He’s a pirate, he’s a king, he’s got a top hat and he’s got gears for teeth. Sir, You Are Being Plundered.

This is the beautiful Vampire Witch by Andrey Vasilchenko. At first glance it seems like a clichéd RPG or fantasy art, but it’s just so well done and Andrey’s little touches drew me in. Phantom bat!

Last but not least is Eduardo Garcia’s South Witch. I’ll let Ed blow your mind here: “The collar around her neck magically separates the head [from the] body, preventing her from using most of her magic.” Woah.

Outcast Odyssey Trading Card Game Art Contest: Level Up Your Exposure

Illustrators and other visual artists: want to end your year with a dream and possibly start 2015 with an opportunity? Check out the Outcast Odyssey Card Master Challenge, an art contest by Bandai Namco and DeviantArt.

The contest calls for a portrait or illustration of a dragon, a monster, a witch, a warlock or a steampunk warrior that fits the free-to-play trading card game’s aesthetics. The contest is open to all DeviantArt members who are at least 18 years old. If you’re not yet a member, signing up with the site is free.

DeviantArt staff will select three grand prize winners who will each receive a $1,200 (USD) cash prize, a 128GB iPad Mini, a Razer Blackshark headset, 8,000 DeviantArt points and one-year DeviantArt premium membership. Most importantly, the grand prize entries will be included in Outcast Odyssey as limited-edition cards.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Fan Art Contest Winners: Nephalem Gifts

Last February Blizzard and deviantART held a Diablo III: Reaper of Souls fan art contest. The winners of the contest have now been announced. Diablo III Art Director Christian Lichtner had the honor of picking the winners. He chose Kuzinskiy Andrey and his barbarian-centered piece New Evil as the grand prize winner.

deviantART member TheRafa bagged second place. In Among the Dead, TheRafa featured the new Crusader class about to engage the Reaper of Souls himself, Angel of Death Malthael.

Yong Jun Cho aka nixell won third place with his badass Monk art, Fist of Conviction. This is actually my favorite among the three.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII DeviantART Contest: Current Fashion

Before its Diablo III art contest, DeviantART also held a competition for another major video game – Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. The contest called for the art community’s members to show their own take on the heroine Lightning. The entries were judged by none other than Square Enix’ artist, designer and director Tetsuya Nomura.

The contest was held last month, from February 11 to February 20. Out of the 4,655 submissions, Nomura – known for his character designs for Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, X and XIII and the Kingdom Hearts series – chose three grand prize winners.

Below is Nicolas Barge’s winning piece, of which Nomura said, “At first glance it looks like a CG, and it has a level of quality that makes it look like it was captured as a screenshot. While there were many heroic costumes for Lightning, I was drawn to the femininity of this costume and her hairstyle.”

Nomura was also impressed by Randis Albion’s piece, saying, “It’s wonderful as an illustration, but in addition to that, the artist drew in both the front and back views, so I felt the artist’s clear intent when they created this piece. The red and blue color scheme was very beautiful, too.”

Marga Donaire’s submission is one of my favorites among all of the entries, and it sounded like Nomura felt the same way too: “With one look I was hooked. The costume itself is sophisticated, and it’s also very well done as an illustration. The background that reminded me of the Japanese flag (Hinomaru) matched well with the piece and was beautiful. As an artist, when I look at different works of art, I think to myself “If it were up to me, I would do it differently,” but that thought didn’t cross my mind once when I saw this picture.”

As if earning praise from such an accomplished artist wasn’t enough, Nicolas, Randis and Marga also won an original sketch from Tetsuya Nomura, a custom Xbox 360 and controller, $1000, a keychain, a shirt, and copies of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Fan Art Contest: Offline PvP

Artists, it’s time to transmute your skills into fame, treasure and a trip to Blizzard’s headquarters. The game developer has teamed up with the online community deviantART to set up the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls fan art contest. To enter, you have to make “a portrait or illustration showing a central figure from one of the six classes of Heroes of Sanctuary or of Malthael preparing for the coming conflict.”

The first place winner gets a two night trip to Blizzard’s office in California, $5,000 (USD), a signed copy of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Collector’s Edition, 1-year Premium membership to DeviantART, 8,000 DeviantART points and will have his or her winning entry printed and signed by the Diablo III Creative Team.

Let These Dragons Hold Your Dice for You

Dragons are awesome. And there are no better creatures to protect your dice between use. Dragons instinctively guard dice as if they were 20-sided eggs. It’s just the way they are. DeviantArtist DragonsAndBeasties knows this and so has created the cutest way to keep your dice organized.

She created these detailed little dragons in all kinds of colors and styles to hold your dice. She also has several other dragons, ponies and creatures in her collection. This should help her spice up her next Dungeons and Dragons session.

Plus, they can double as miniatures depending on the game that you are playing. These dragons are all win.

Heroes of Science Action Figures Would Get Their Butts Kicked by G.I. Joe

The heroes of science. They have changed our world. Did they make it a better place? Sometimes. Not the guys who invented the atomic bomb so much. In general though, these eggheads have bettered our world. It’s time to add them to our toy collections. Even though your G.I. Joes and Star Wars figures will totally kick their butt and take their lunch money.

These conceptual action figures are based on famous physicists, mathematicians, chemists, and other scientists by DeviantARTist datazoid. Sure Neil deGrasse Tyson and Richard Feynman might make for some pretty boring toys since they only battle with their minds instead of their fists, but so does Professor X. And he’s a badass.

They each took between 40 minutes and 2 hours each to create. They are all based on Star Trek: TNG and Star Trek: DS9 figures (mostly Odo from DS9, and Picard as Dixon Hill from TNG). Then he modified them in Photoshop.

Portal Turret Gas Mask Will Violently Filter Your Breathing Air

Nowadays, kids are into violence. Guns, explosions, fist fights – you can’t deny that these have all become an integral part of the gaming experience. Borderlands 2? Violent. Halo 4? Violent. All 50 million versions of the same game? (CoD.) Violent.

Portal is one of the more docile games in terms of getting injured, but we’ve taken one small part of that experience and focused on it in all kinds of different creations. Which part is that, you ask? The part that shoots things, of couse – the turret from Portal! One minute it’s your friend, the next it’s stabbing you in the back. With bullets. Still recovering emotionally from Wheatley’s betrayal.

A guy by the name of TwoHornsUnited, who understands the concept of two objects being stronger than a single object, has created this awesome tribute to Portal. No, I don’t think it will actually protect you from noxious gas, but it sure as heck will make the neighbors pee their pants when I crawl in through the window holding my Portal gun replica.

Here’s what the mask looks like from the view of the fifty foot woman. You know – did anyone ever try to reason with that lumbering creature of a woman? “Are you talking about my wife again?” HAHA – I’m going to tell on you like I used to in grade school when you’d flick boogers at Jenny. “So you weren’t talking about my wife?” No – we already came to the consensus that she looks like that bear Matthew Inman drew.

If you like the Portal Turret Gas Mask, then you’ll definitely want to check out the Portal Webcam. ”Not really, actually.” I’m not a mind-reader, you intellectual potato. Go take a look at the LEGO Portal set while I wallow in my self-pity, which gives off an odd stench.
