Most knives have a rather simple blade deployment technique. Some require manual flipping out of the blade from within the handle, others have spring-loaded switches that cause the blade to swivel or shoot out (switchblades, as they’re called) – the PICHI G9, however, opts for something a little more fidgety-fun. The knife features a two-part handle that opens up to reveal the blade sandwiched on the inside. Deploying your blade requires a bit of thumb action, causing the handle to disengage, revealing the blade inside, which can then be slid out. Magnets help the handle snap back into position, creating an opening experience that’s uniquely appealing, has a nifty tactile quality to it, and can be faster than most manual knives with a fair amount of practice.

Measuring a mere 3.14 inches long, the PICHI G9 is finger-sized, giving it a compact form factor that’s just designed for your hands and for travel. The entire thing weighs a paltry 55 grams (1.94 oz) blade and all, and comes crafted from grade 5 titanium, known for its quality and sheer durability. The cutter-esque blades have a sheepsfoot design, which makes them great for piercing and slicing, while the blades themselves are symmetric, which means you can just flip them over if one tip gets dull, using the other side before you need to replace the old blade with a new one.

The Titan sports a design so incredibly clean and sophisticated, it’s worthy of being a part of an elite EDC collection. The Titan isn’t designed for keychains and carabiners – it’s made for pockets of suits and tuxedos. The pocket clip therefore serves its purpose rather well, giving the Titan its “gentleman’s knife” demeanor.

Great gear deserves a great home… and simply stashing your state-of-the-art EDC collection in a dopp bag or in a drawer in your shed is honestly a little shameful if you ask me. A great display case allows you to store, and more importantly, flaunt your EDC to your guests like the trophies they are. Whether it’s knives, multitools, pens, money clips, or anything else you’ve got on hand, a good EDC display case is just about as much of an investment as your EDC itself.

Why do I need a Display Case?

We’re at a point where EDC from companies like Gerber, CIVIVI, Tekto, CRKT, and The James Brand are less utility-focused tools and more of visual specimens of artistry and craftsmanship that ‘get the job done’. With the use of fine materials like Damascus Steel, Stone-washed Titanium, Micarta, and even sometimes top-grain wood, these knives, tools, and gear look like works of art, which is why a display case makes sense. The display case not only allows you to admire them when not in use, but it also lets you access them when you need to, whether it’s to show off to a fellow collector/enthusiast or get some tool action.

Moreover, a display case adds to the beauty of your EDC collection. It organizes your tools but also gives you a cohesive unit on your desk that looks great and enhances the overall value of your tabletop as well as your gear.

What should I look for in an EDC Display Case?

It overwhelmingly depends on the kind of EDC you’ve got, but luckily, there’s a vast variety of cases to choose from. Is your EDC watch-centric? Well, a nice watch-holder case should work. It’s important to evaluate the kind of EDC you’d like to showcase (watches, blades, pens, coins, perhaps even spectacles) and then choose your case based around that. Make sure your case complements your gear as well as your decor… although you can never really go wrong with a nice hardwood and some plexiglass. For blades, try not to choose a leather or metal display case, because leather may end up getting cut, and metal might dull your blade. Don’t focus on just one gear category

Most people (not just EDC collectors) end up having multiple things they carry around with them, which is why it’s important to not fall into the trap of a single-use display case. Choose something with versatility, perhaps a few drawers and organizing areas for your other gear. A place for your ‘less favorite’ knives, maybe a few carabiners, some pens, loose change, etc. Put the fancy stuff on display, but keep the other stuff easily accessible for later. And make sure your drawers are lined with felt or microfiber, so your tools don’t end up scratching the wood… or worse, slipping around every time you open/close the drawer and scratching each other.

What budget should I have?

The quantity and the value of your EDC should determine how much you spend on a display case. Unless you’ve got high-flying collector’s edition gear worth tens of thousands collectively, your display case shouldn’t cost you more than $250-300. The larger your collection, the bigger your case should be, but whether you’ve got luxury watches or high-end knives, a good display case shouldn’t cost more than $500 even on the higher side. Barely the size of a fountain pen, the Voltwist-V1 looks like just a regular screwdriver, but packs a whole lot of impressive tech underneath. The pocket-sized electric screwdriver comes armed with a metallic body, a minimally slick design, and an intuitive user interface that leaves little to be desired. It all starts really with the LCD screen on the top, which tells you your battery level as well as the screwing direction, followed by two buttons below that let you toggle between clockwise and counter-clockwise movements based on the classic ‘righty tighty lefty loosey’ adage.

You’d expect an electric screwdriver to be somewhat complicated to operate, but the Voltwist-V1’s design couldn’t possibly make things easier. Once you choose from the 50 bits that come in the V1’s kit, just load it in, and turn the knob at the tip to cycle between 10 different speed/torque settings (depending on whether you’re working with heavy-duty stuff that needs more torque, or small electronic items that you want to speed through). Select the setting of your choice, and simply hit the button under the screen to begin opening screws. Post-repair, the lowermost button helps you put the screws back, satisfyingly tightening them so that they don’t accidentally open after.

All you really have to do then is hold the screwdriver in place as it automatically rotates to tighten or loosen screws. A set of LED lights on either side helps illuminate your working zone, so whether you’re in the dark or your screw’s hidden away in a tiny corner, visibility is never an issue.

The Voltwist-V1 runs on a 650mAh battery, giving it its ridiculously slim and handy design. The Li-ion battery lasts 90 minutes on a full charge, getting you through lengthy projects without really needing to worry about running out of juice. Leica EDC Multitool was designed for camera tinkerers as well as seasoned outdoor enthusiasts

Multitools have a special place in an adventurer’s life, who must always be prepared for an emergency when venturing outdoors. The best preparation against the unforeseen is having a multitool in the everyday carry gear. Offering a number of simple and effective ways to tackle a range of problems when outside the house, or in the everyday routine at home, for that matter, a multitool in its portable format is a constructive option.

If you’re an enthusiast, or for the knowledge of the not-so-familiar, Victorinox and Leatherman are arguably the two most prominent names in the multitool industry. With the use of new materials and formats, many competitors and young designers are reinventing the wheel. A case in point is the Leica Multi, which is an EDC designed for the famed optics giant with impressions of its cameras reflected in the form factor.

Over the years with its unrelenting simplicity and compactness, the Leica cameras have paved the way for all types of modern photography. Now the Leica M forms the basis for the design of a multitool that draws more than its looks from the SL2 camera. The Leica Multi has a similar machined aluminum body and is manually assembled for precision and quality.

The smallest of design features of the Marco Barbosa’s multitool reflect the Leica brand image and closely represent its analog camera details, which would allow the familiar customers to use the multitool easily due to the acquired knowledge from using Leica cameras. To keep it in line, and more productive for Leica users, the Multi is made to stick (through a housing) to the bottom of a Leica camera where the tripod does. To ensure the everyday carry gear is even more versatile to use its housing includes a spatial reading photometer that harks back to the analog days.

Talking of versatility, the Leica Multi is designed in two parts. The screwdriver, Philips screwdriver, saw, knife, scissors, corkscrew, and cap opener are located on one side, while the precision instruments like the flashlight and goldsmith’s keys are placed on the other. Opening these individual tools is easy: select the tool and rotate the handle.

This handmade Nebula Damascus Skeleton Knife looks like it was forged by Zeus himself

With that uniquely gorgeous crack-like pattern on its surface, the knife looks positively electric, with bolts of lightning running down from hilt to blade!

I’ve been in the writing business for 9 years, and what I truly love about it is that you still manage to learn new things every day. I pretty much considered myself well-versed in Damascus Steel, but browsing through my YouTube introduced me to this new, gorgeous variant of the marbled metal. Dubbed Nebula Damascus, this steel doesn’t have the signature waves and bands you’d see in conventional Damascus Steel. Instead, it sports a cracked, cell-like pattern on its surface, looking somewhat like a nebula (hence the name). This form of steel is simply created by forging ball bearings together, causing them to compress and condense into a block. The bearings deform and fill the gaps in between them, creating this unique-looking surface that your eyes can’t get enough of.

The knife in question is a beautiful all-metal piece, forged by YouTuber HANS. The procedure gets documented in the video above, and although it looks deceptively simple, there’s a lot (of effort and expertise) that goes behind making any form of Damascus Steel, as most experts will tell you. In fact, it took HANS 7 failed tries before he arrived at this gorgeous piece of art.

The Nebula Damascus Skeleton Knife is an all-metal EDC with a fixed-blade design. The highlight of the knife is the material itself, but it gets complimented by a skeletal design which also involves a few strategic cutouts in the blade to help reduce weight while also giving your finger a place to rest/fidget while using the knife. The knife’s dagger-point blade has sharp edges on either side, which culminate in a pointy tip that you can use in a variety of ways. This also gives the Nebula Damascus Skeleton Knife an ambidextrous design, which most people will appreciate.

HANS creates a billet of steel by pouring ball-bearings into a metal pipe and sealing both ends. The pipe then gets hammered, heated, and hammered again into a workable billet of metal, which HANS then cuts his knife shape into. It’s a laborious process that requires a lot of forging/hammering (you need to ensure there are ZERO air gaps between the bearings), but the end result is quite unlike anything you’ll have ever seen.

Once the knife’s shape is formed, it gets a meticulous amount of sanding/polishing to ensure the surface is as perfect as possible. The sanding/polishing is then followed by the final step, immersing the knife in an acid bath to reveal the edges between all the ball-bearings. Notably, most forgers fill the air gaps between the ball bearings with powdered metal, but HANS chose to skip this step. The result is a wonderful faux cracked surface that gives the knife an otherworldly charm. You can follow the rest of HANS’ endeavors on his Instagram page.

This gorgeous Copper and Carbon Steel Dagger is a Masterclass in Minimalism

As a self-proclaimed EDC aficionado, there’s a certain joy to writing about knives, but there’s an even bigger joy to actually see them be built. If you fancy the latter, look no further than Koss, a YouTuber who’s dedicated his life to building some of the most eclectic knives and recording the entire process for people to see and appreciate. At the end, the knife gets listed on their Etsy store, almost as a reward for the viewers, giving them the opportunity to own one of the artist’s unique works. Each knife is made just once, as Koss creates and uploads the video, creating a sense of preciousness around the knife itself.

This particular beauty is perhaps one of Koss’ most minimal designs ever. It starts off as a simple hollow rectangular copper pipe and a carbon steel billet, which Koss expertly transforms into a beautiful dagger + sheath that focuses on visual purity.

Most knives try to channel an aggressive aesthetic, given the fact that they’re weapons designed to harm and intimidate. The Copper Dagger isn’t that, it’s more of a gentleman’s letter-opener that also serves as an enemy-opener too… which explains why it looks as minimal as it does. The knife eschews any unnecessary detail, relying simply on showcasing its materials. There’s no pocket-clip, no jimping, not even as much as a textured grip. Just a beautiful dagger-point blade with a fuller groove running along the center to provide stiffness and character.

Building the knife is a process that borders on sheer artistry too. Koss starts with a rather rusty-looking billet of steel, which he cuts, machines, sands, and hardens into the blade of the dagger. The dagger’s dimensions are machined to absolute precision, designed to fit snugly into the copper pipe he sourced too. Once ready, Koss soft-hammered the pipe over the dagger, ensuring a tight, glue-less and screwless fit. The full-tang blade then got a bit of sanding done on the back, revealing both the metals with a neat bevel detail.

Sadly, the Copper Dagger didn’t last too long on Koss’ Etsy store. Priced at $420, the dagger saw an immediate buyer who snagged this minimalist beauty.
