SNES & Super Famicom-themed Backlit GBAs: Super Family Entertainment

Retro console mod shop Rose Colored Gaming is going to release two special Game Boy Advance variants this month. The shop’s Super Family Entertainment series features the original Game Boy Advance with an SNES and a Super Famicom paint job. Both variants will also sport the GBA SP’s backlit display.

In addition to the spot-on paint job and the appropriate logos, it seems like the handhelds will also have boxes printed with the same design as the SNES and Super Famicom’s packaging.

There’s no word on exactly how much these beautiful handhelds will cost, but Rose Colored Gaming did say that they will be more expensive than its other GBA mods, which typically go for $160 (USD) to $175. You can see in progress shots of the handhelds on Rose Colored Gaming’s Facebook page.

G-Pad Gamepad for GBA4iOS: Thumb Rubber

GBA4iOS is a popular Game Boy Advance emulator for iOS. The latest version lets you play Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games without the need to jailbreak your device. The unavoidable downside of GBA4iOS is that you’ll have to use virtual buttons. AJ Design Studio wants to change that with the G-Pad.

The G-Pad is a rubber sleeve for the 5th generation iPod Touch and the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C that gives you physical buttons to press, which will in turn press the corresponding virtual buttons.

How fitting is that? A controller emulator for a handheld emulator. It has a glaring flaw though: it doesn’t have shoulder buttons. I’m not sure how the inventor missed that. Skip to around 0:50 in the video below to see it in action.

Is it just me or does the kid have unnaturally smooth hands and arms? It’s like he’s CGI. Anyway you can pledge at least $13 (USD) on Indiegogo to get a G-Pad as a reward. AJ Design Studio will make an iPad Mini version if it raises at least $25,000. I doubt it’ll get that far without shoulder buttons though.

GBA4iOS 2.0 Lets You Play Game Boy Advance Games on iOS, No Jailbreak Required

A couple of days ago we saw how you can play NES games on a stock iOS device. It turns out you don’t need to jailbreak your iOS device to play Game Boy Advance games on either, thanks to Riley Testut’s GBA4iOS emulator.

Riley already made a version of the emulator that works with iOS 6; he coded GBA4iOS 2.0 specifically for iOS 7. The new version has lots of features, including a convenient but shady method of grabbing digital copies of games to play. Unlike the NES emulator, GBA4iOS is an actual iOS app – but installed outside of the App Store. You actually have to set your device’s date back to an earlier date to install it for some reason, though.

Here’s Operationidroid with a beginner’s guide to the emulator:

Head to the GBA4iOS site on your iOS device to download the emulator. Remember to only play DCOGTYLO.

Game Boy Color Costume Actually Plays Game Boy Advance Games: Tricky Treat

Back in 2009 we saw a dude who went as a playable Game Boy for Halloween. This year YouTuber MikeHandidate went as an updated version: a Game Boy Color. Perhaps realizing how awkward it would be to have the handheld’s buttons on his body, he chose to place the controls on his hands. Oh wait.

Even though it’s not very polished in terms of appearance, I’m still impressed with Mike’s costume. But eagle-eyed Nintendo fans will dock him a few points, and not because it looks like a fifth grader cut and pasted most of his costume. It’s because he chose to run a Game Boy Advance game – I think it’s Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen –  on his costume. Mike said it’s because the screen on his costume has a 16:10 aspect ratio, so he thought a Game Boy Advance game would look better on it compared to a stretched out Game Boy Color game.

Now that’s a handheld game console.

Hyperkin RetroN 4 to Play Original NES, SNES, Genesis, and GBA Carts via HDMI

Fans of classic gaming systems will be happy to hear that HyperKin is working on their latest retro console, and this one has a couple of new tricks up its nonexistent sleeves.

The latest system, dubbed the RetroN 4, leverages today’s technologies to bring improvements to retro gaming. Like the RetroN 3 before it, the new console can play NES, SNES and Genesis cartridges, but can also play Game Boy Advance carts too. It can also handle both NTSC and PAL formats. But the big upgrades come in the form of Bluetooth wireless controllers, and an HDMI output for use on today’s HDTVs.

In addition, the new console will sport an interface called “Perdana,” which is expected to provide capabilities like button reassignment and “other features” to be announced. Personally, I’m hoping for some sort of ability to save game states or run cheat modes, but those aren’t confirmed.

The RetroN 4 is expected to be revealed at the Midwest Gaming Classic in Brookfield, Wisconsin on Saturday, March 23 at 11:00am Central.
