Instasaber iPhone App Turns Paper into a Virtual Lightsaber

We’ve all dreamed of owning our own lightsaber, just like the ones that Luke and Darth Vader used in the movies. Sure, you can buy props that look pretty awesome, but we all want a lightsaber that is actually made of light, like in the movies. Forget plastic tubes.

Well, we can’t get one in the real world just yet, but there’s a new app that can make it happen in the virtual world at least. All you need is a rolled up piece of paper.

Check out this video demonstration of the InstaSaber app for iPhone. It uses augmented reality tech to turn a rolled up piece of paper – or any white cylindrical object – into a lightsaber when viewed on your phone. It’s as close as you can get to an actual Star Wars lightsaber experience. Basically it will provide you with a few seconds of fun and excite your inner geek so much that you will have to use it again and again.

If you want to try it out, you can download it right here. Pretty cool. As seen in the video, you can even use it to get rid of pesky Porgs. One day, lightsabers will be real, but until then, we at least have this app.

Learn How to Make Your Own Lightsaber Pen

If the pen is mightier than the sword, this lightsaber pen is mightier than… The pen. Despite our technological advancements, we do still use writing instruments on occasion, but one day soon they may be relics, so a lightsaber pen like this has a lot in common with the Jedi weapon of choice. Both are works of art and both really are elegant weapons from a more civilized age.

Check out the video below from YouTube channel “Making Stuff” as they machine a solid piece of aluminum bar stock into a beautiful replica of a lightsaber. It all starts with a piece of aluminum in the lathe, where the ribbed profile of the saber hilt is cut. Those gaps are simply filled in with a black Sharpie for added contrast and depth. Then the emitter takes shape and after that he hollows out one end so a brass tube can be inserted. The acrylic blade is next, lathed and polished nicely. An ink cartridge completes the weapon. Watch the entire glorious build for yourself:

The creator must have felt like Luke after completing his own lightsaber as he readied himself for Jabba’s palace to rescue his friends. Best pen ever!

Star Wars Lightsaber Salt and Pepper Grinders: Imperial Seasoning

Season your meals with the light side or the dark side with these cool grinders. These lightsaber salt and pepper grinders are the latest kitchen accessory in your already oversaturated Star Wars themed kitchen.

The blue is for salt and the red is for pepper, obviously. So instead of saying pass the salt, you would now say, “Your father wanted you to have this.” They aren’t long enough for dinner table lightsaber fights, but you can try to battle as you spill salt and pepper all over the place.

You can grab a set over on Amazon for $39.99(USD). Disney executives won’t sleep until the entire planet is covered in Star Wars related kitchen toys.

These Lightsaber Lamps Illuminate The Dark Side of the Floors

Fans of the Dark Side will definitely want to check out these awesome new floor lamps that will help light your Star Wars themed room in style. The lamps look like lightsabers just standing there. One is fashioned after Kylo Ren’s crossbar saber and the other is the classic Darth Vader saber.

Both of the lamps include a remote control that allows you to control the brightness from across the room. The Vader lamp has one strip of red LEDs while the Kylo has three LEDs. That should mean more light from the Kylo lamp.

San Francisco Gets its Own Lightsaber Academy

I know I am not the only Star Wars fan out there who has long thought they need to learn to sword fight. Sure you can take normal fencing or Kendo, but let’s face it neither of those are the same as fighting with lightsabers. If you live in San Francisco you can now learn actual lightsaber fighting.

LudoSport’s Lightsaber Academy teaches you to fight in preparation for local, national, and international competitions. Before you go thinking that lightsaber combat just consists of wildly flailing about, the sport has seven forms of combat to master, and ten rules for you to follow.

Participants earn points for attending classes and meeting up with fellow participants for duels with the results placed online after the battle. Classes in San Francisco kicked off over the weekend at the Studiomix on Van Ness.
